Sitting down is OK for a little bit of the time.

However, in my kid's school, the head coach sat down a lot. Although a nice guy, I wasn't unhappy when he wasn't renewed.

Former international doubles star Tan Boon Heong blames the coaches for Malaysia’s lack of results in major tournaments this year.

But he is quite irked, especially with one of the men’s doubles coaches. The men’s doubles are handled by Paulus Firman, Cheah Soon Kit and Vountus Indra Mawan.

“I’m disappointed that our men’s doubles players failed to get a medal. I don’t blame the players,” said Boon Heong, who was the last Malaysian to win the Asian Games gold with Koo Kien Keat at the 2006 edition in Doha.

“I’ve been helping out as a sparring partner in the national team. What I’m disappointed is the quality of the coaching. One of the coaches does not give 100% focus in training. Sometimes, you find him just sitting there.”

“I believe that players’ partnerships are split up if they are not in the good books of the coach. Sometimes, selection is not done on merit,” he said.

“I’m voicing out my opinion because I’m concerned with the state of Malaysian badminton, especially the men’s doubles.

“We have the quality but it’s important for players to be motivated too. Players will excel if the environment is good,” he said.

I wonder what's the role of a head coach? Are they more towards planning and managing or do they have to be hands on on courts to spot weaknesses and fine tune the players?

Why not hire ex players to head BAM? But then this is not possible in Malaysia, money rules and the capable people are always chased out from the sports association. Sad.

It's not common for ex-players to actually run an organisation. Generally speaking, they are better players than they are managers.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will hire a new coaching director to revive the fortune of Malaysian badminton – and hopefully, they will stick with their decision this time.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have not set a timeline for the appointment but the new supremo is expected to start by the end of this year as the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games qualification period begins early next year.

Yesterday, BAM coaching and training committee (CNT) chairman Datuk Ng Chin Chai (pic) said they would begin the hunt for a suitable candidate for the hot seat after approval by the BAM council.

It is not the first time the BA of Malaysia have gone back and forth in appointing a supremo.

The current five heads are Datuk Misbun Sidek (men’s singles), Datuk Tey Seu Bock (women’s singles), Paulus Firman (men’s doubles), Rosman Razak (women’s doubles) and Pang Cheh Chang (mixed doubles).

Chin Chai said the roles and responsibilities of the new coaching director would be “different” from Frost’s.

“The appointment of a coaching director is one of the things that we have to do for the national team to move forward,” said Chin Chai after chairing a three-hour CNT meeting at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) yesterday.

“This director has to handle the entire the national squad from the top coaches to junior players on a full-time basis. His task will be different from Morten.

“We believe the quality of the training programme will be better and more focused by having a coaching director.”

Asked during the meeting on the possible candidates, Chin Chai said: “Few names have cropped up but no one has been identified yet.

“We’ve not drawn up his job scope yet. This matter will be brought up to our council. Hiring a coaching director will not come cheap. We may need to source for funding from the National Sports Council, the National Sports Institute or the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“We hope to engage him before we begin the Olympic qualifying process,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chin Chai said the CNT committee took full responsibility for the recent failure of the national team at the Indonesia Asian Games but he said the players also failed to perform their duties.

Chin Chai said the shuttlers, including the seniors, could face the chop before the Tokyo Olympics if they continue to under-achieve.

“BAM have done a lot for the players. We may even have over-pampered the players,” said Chin Chai.

“We’ve given them good facilities, we’ve employed the best coaches and we pay them good allowances and incentives.

“We’ve to draw a line here. When we give the best, we expect the best from the players. If they expect to have a good life without performing, they can leave.

“We expect podium performances from the senior players. They’ve been served with an ultimatum, if they still fail, we will phase them out.”

[EXCLUSIVE] Players blast BAM over money

“We don't know why it is taking so long for the money to reach us," said a player who does not want to be named, in an exclusive interview with NSTP Sport.
    By Fabian Peter - September 5, 2018 @ 7:59am

KUALA LUMPUR: Patience is wearing thin for several Malaysian professional shuttlers, who have yet to receive their prize money from various tournaments since January.

It is understood that this has been the longest time these players have been made to wait by the BA of Malaysia (BAM). In the past, they would get their prize money in three or four months.

The players, who depend on the money for tournament expenses and training, are frustrated and upset.

"We understand the money comes from BWF (Badminton World Federation), but they usually take a month or so to transfer the money to the national body.

“We don't know why it is taking so long for the money to reach us," said a player who does not want to be named, in an exclusive interview with NSTP Sport.

While there is no confirmation on the exact figure, it is learnt to be about RM100,000 in total.

"It does not only demoralize us during training, but it also affects our preparation as we depend on this money for our travel expenses when we play in tournaments overseas.

"In the past 10 years, this has been the longest we have been made to wait.

“The worse thing is when we find out that foreign players, who played in the same tournaments, have already received their payments," added another shuttler.

Apart from podium finishers, the shuttlers who make the round of 16 in tournaments are guaranteed prize money.

Among the notable players from Malaysia plying their trade in the world circuit are independent shuttlers Goh Giap Chin, K. Yogendran, Chong Wei Feng, Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Arif Latif, Nur Azriyn Ayub, R.Satheishtharan and 2018 World Championships bronze medallist Liew Daren.

BAM deny withholding payments to shuttlers

    By Fabian Peter - September 5, 2018 @ 10:41pm

KUALA LUMPUR: The BA of Malaysia (BAM) have denied allegations of holding on to any prize money, claiming to be merely playing the role of a ‘postman’ in delivering them to the players.

This comes following an exclusive report by NSTP Sport this week, on several professional shuttlers alleging to have not received their prize money from various tournaments since January.

“Basically, we don’t owe players for years or anything more than 10 months,” said BAM treasurer and finance committee chairman Datuk V. Subramaniam today.

“You know we get the money from BWF (Badminton World Federation), and it doesn’t come with a list. We don’t know how much goes to which player, so the process takes some time, a couple of months.

“This year, for the first few tournaments like the Malaysia Masters and Thailand Master, we only got the money in May, and in July we got some money. Why would we want to be holding on to their money? We are just the postman.

“What we are not happy about is that these players should have come to us first instead of going straight to the press. Their allegations are wrong.

“We are the paymasters and they should have rightfully come to us first to express whatever grievances. We have our general manager (Michelle Chai), who would have addressed them. If they are still unhappy, then by all means go to any press.

“The problem here is they never came to us at all.”

BAM, however, assured that all outstanding payment will be paid as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, in response to another NSTP Sport report on betting allegations made by a national coach, Coaching and Training (C&T) committee chairman, Datuk Ng Chin Chai said: “BAM will investigate these allegations, and have left it to our Rules and Disciplinary Committee to get to the bottom of this.

“However, BAM have got zero tolerance and would like to reiterate that we are against any form of betting. It can be friendly, or during training, but we have informed our coaches to make sure none of it takes place here.”

BAM look set to appoint new patron and Rexy for top post
    Read more at https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...on-and-rexy-for-top-post/#tP3Qcv0zXkw2iB82.99

PETALING JAYA: A badminton supremo and a new patron are set to be appointed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) today.

The BAM will be holding a special council meeting at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara to discuss a few important matters, including on appointments of a new coaching director and its patron.

It is learnt that former Olympic champion Rexy Mainaky of Indonesia may be chosen as the new coaching director to reshape the course of Malaysian badminton.

Rexy is currently the performance director with Thailand.

Under his leadership, the northern neighbour did well in several major tournaments, including emerging as the overall champions at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games last year and reaching the final of the Uber Cup Finals in Bangkok, Thailand, in May.

Rexy was with Malaysia for seven and half years from 2005-2012 as the doubles chief coach and under him, former world No. 1 Tan Boon Heong-Koo Kien Keat did exceptionally well in the men’s doubles.

BAM are looking for a head honcho following the players’ dismal showing in several major tournaments this year.

The team failed to return home with medals from the Asian Games in Jakarta and they also fell short at the World Championships in Nanjing, China (last month), the Thomas Cup Finals in Bangkok, Thailand (May), and the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia (April).

Malaysia are without a coaching director following Denmark Morten Frost’s decision to give up his technical director post, which he held from 2015-2017.

The training programme are currently run by five heads and they are Datuk Misbun Sidek (men’s singles), Datuk Tey Seu Bock (women’s singles), Paulus Firman (men’s doubles), Rosman Razak (women’s doubles) and Pang Cheh Chang (mixed doubles).

Meanwhile, the BA of Malaysia are expected to announce the replacement for patron Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

One of the BAM officials said: “The BAM have to move forward and we’ve decided to name a new patron.”

It’s unsure who will replace Rosmah but a few names are being thrown around, including the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar.
