At least two primary reasons which underscore weak entry this year, total prize-money has been degraded steeply, from US$750,000 to US$150,000 in this rebranding HSBC-BWF World Tour. Bad time-slot is another reason, most of the elite shuttlers are busy to prepare Thomas Uber Cup Finals which will kick off on 20th May. Sai Praneeth occupies second seed and will spearhead India men's singles here, Sameer Verma, Sourabh Verma, Ajay Jayaram, Lakshya Sen. Their challengers will coming from a strings of upcoming players, Lee Cheuk Yiu, Koki Watanabe, Yu Igarashi and some Chinese second-stringers, Zhao Junpeng, Sun Feixiang, Lu Guangzu. The opening round between Sen versus Lee CY should be interesting to follow, the 16 years Indian teenager stole first game against Lin Dan last week in Auckland. Former champion Saina Nehwal has withdrawn from this tournament, leaving top-half of draw becomes limping, Cheung Ngan Yi is the highest seeded player on the fray alongside Chinese back-ups, Zhang Yiman, Cai Yanyan. On the opposite draw, 2014 CWG gold medalists Michelli Li has tough path en route to final, two Japanese rivals may twist the plot, Minatsu Mitani and recent Orleans Masters Super 100 winner Shiori Sato, the Canadian ace will take on tricky test first, Han Yue, semifinalist in just concluded NZL Open. Indonesian men's doubles pairs are expected to redeem Auckland defeat, Angriawan/Hardianto and Nayaka/Santoso will be the favourites based on their seeding position. Japan and Korea pairs dominate women's doubles draw as China only represented by one pair, Du Yue/Li Yinhui. Fierce competition is described by mixed doubles that comprises Malaysia Goh SH/Shevon Lai, Chan PS/Goh LY, China He JT/Du Y, Korean experimenting partnerships Seo SJ/Chae YJ, Choi SG/Kim HN and some Indonesian relatively new combinations, Suwardi/Susanto, Faizal/Widjaja, Ronald/Saufika. What is happening on court number 4 , First the scoreline was 22-20 20-22, then its suddenly got changed to 22-20 22-20 and Ajay jayaram won the match , and then the scoreline began from 0-0 from first set.
Alwin Franscis got injured . After leading with a game (30-28) and 7-8 in the game 2, Nandagopal/Alwin retired from the match. Korean pair advanced to next round.
It seems the trouble of the technical side (maybe the umpire didn't know how to operate the tool then choose the wrong button there, so the scoreline restarted although it should go to the third game AND Riichi Takeshita takes the deciding game 21-17 at the end. Riichi Takeshita advanced to second round tomorrow. EDIT: I think it confirmed that some technical problems happened. At the end of the last two matches of today (Lee Cheuk Yiu vs Lakshya Sen & Emily Kan/Isabel Zhong vs Michelle Tam/Yuran Zhang), then the match of Ajay Jayaram vs Riichi Takeshita reappeared at TS LiveScore and ran point by point until the third game finished.
What happened to Michelle Li ? If nothing wrong, assuming she's not injured or something, better not as Uber Cup is just the wee after, then all I can say is, Well done, lass, Han Yue, for besting the highly fancied No.2 seed, Michelle Li, in what appears to be two convincing straight sets by the identical score of 21-11.
Just wondering whether Michelli Li injured or unwell, the Canadian succumbs to Han Yue easily judging by the scoreline in just 32 mins. Another seeded tumbles, Shiori Sato lost to local player Wendy Chen Hsuan Yu in three games that ended 22-20. China has the most representative in WS last sixteen, Cai Yanyan will take on her teammate Zhang Yiman, Ji Shuting and Han Yue. Title contenders Cheung Ngan Yi and Minatsu Mitani pass opening round without trouble. Sai Praneeth once again defeats Misha Zilberman, the same opponent that he beat in Auckland meet. Sameer Verma pushes extra effort to tame NZL player Abhinav Manota who sent packing his older brother Sourabh Verma last week. Lakshya Sen lost narrowly to Lee Cheuk Yiu in a thrilling deciding game, 20-22 / 21-13 / 19-21, this HKG player is really troubled by 16 y.o. promising teenager. ROUND OF 16 (01.00pm) => https://www.tournamentsoftware.com/...2351D8-4D29-4E7A-B3DB-8CBF2E65CF32&d=20180510
QUARTERFINAL (03.00pm) => https://www.tournamentsoftware.com/...2351D8-4D29-4E7A-B3DB-8CBF2E65CF32&d=20180511 China back-ups secure three spots in last eight, much satisfying than last week outcome but they will find tougher opponent from this stage. Lu Guangzu who managed runner-up of recent Ling Shui Masters will up against Sameer Verma, one of Indian Thomas Cup-bound player. Zhou Zeqi gets 2014 WC bronze medalist Tommy Sugiarto. Maybe the left-hander Zhao Junpeng has better prospect against Indonesian veteran Sony Dwi Kuncoro. Tournament favourite Sai Praneeth will be tested by HKG youngster Lee Cheuk Yiu who once again involving in gruelling battle to down Malaysian player Cheam June Wei. One semifinal berth has been assured by China WS, Ji Shuting versus Cai Yanyan, the latter powered past Zhang Yiman in two quick games. One more China junior on the fray, Han Yue will face more experienced rival Ayumi Mine. Both seeding players Cheung Ngan Yi and Minatsu Mitani continue their fine running and expected through to final four. Everything goes smoothly for the frontrunners in doubles category, Angriawan/Hardianto will take on Japanese pair Takano/Tsukamoto while their fellow countrymen Nayaka/Santoso find tricky Korean new combination Choi SG/Seo SJ. Women's doubles category presents the rivalry between Japan and Korea, both nations are grooming their young talents, Sakuramoto/Takahata also reigning World Junior Champion Baek HN/Lee YR will be the pair to watch out in future years. Korea experimenting XD pairs deliver promising prospect, Seo SJ/Chae YJ and Choi GY/Kim HN march on to quarterfinal alongside with top-seed Goh SH/Shevon Lai, Chan PS/Goh LY and second seed He JT/Du Y. Indonesia once again display flopped performance in this discipline, only one pair remain Saputra/Islami who will meet tough foe Rio OG silver medalists tomorrow.
The CHN MS participants who flopped last week at the NZ Open, a disastrous showing, are performing better here at the Aussie Open, except for Ren Pengbo who disappointed again. Another round , another hurdle tomorrow for them. Let's see who gets to wear the 'Crown' on Sunday. Offhand, I'd say Tommy Sugiarto and Sameer Verma are the two frontrunners now, not in any order. I'm afraid, the three remaining CHN MS are short of experience and consistency.
Yes I agree its quite a turnaround for the China MS. Could it have been the cold conditions in N.Zealand. What is surprising is the quality of play by the two MS. Lu Guanzu and the error prone Zhou Zeqi played very well against pretty good opponents. LG especially in beating KHH and D Liew. Similarly ZZ in beating a tough Japanese. RT plays in the usual quick style with sharp smashes. In the second game he threw everything at ZZ and amazingly ZZ was good in defence and returned very well without making the usual unforced errors. If these juniors play like this they can spring a few surprises in the next round. Looking forward to it.
Manu attri/sumeet reddy facing their juniors tomorrow . Will they pass them?. Hope they would. Sent from my SM-G600FY using Tapatalk
The Australia Open used to offer a prize money of US$750,000 for many years. Now it is offering $150,000. How come?
