Allow me to share the article below. It was written by 1966 AE champion Tan Aik Huang. Badminton fans should find it interesting. It is obvious that Mr.Tan Aik Huang and his Malaysian cohorts were self-trained and self-financed players. To make things more difficult they either had their jobs or studies to attend to. Tan Aik Huang, P Gunalan and the Oon brothers, Chong Teik, Chong Jin and Chong Hau were all university students. So was Dr Li Kin Tat a Malayan turned Singaporean. How much time did they have for training? Yet they could challenge the best in the world at that time. http://www.thestar.com.my/news/nati...ime-he-made-his-first-trip-to-the-allengland/
Good read,tbgoh288, you often have such interesting news, stories, information, to share with us. Thanks a lot. Keep coming.
That was very interesting and probably has not change for the players who are not from the big badminton powerhouses (e.g. US, Canada, Brazil, etc). Check out this one about Beiwen Zhang (http://m.todayonline.com/sports/zhang-happy-her-destiny-her-own-hands) and it is similar for Michelle Li and a number of the Canadian team members. Trying to get minimal funding from Badminton Canada, sponsorships, maxing out credit cards, etc.
