At the end of the article, it states that players will get punished by BWF for withdrawing from one tournament to play in another. BWF have already done this. Will it do it again? http://www.badzine.net/features/dozen-to-debut-in-dubai/36288/
There is more detail here. Obviously, the SSF is a very different case from the highest profile similar incident this year, where Canada's Liu/Ng couldn't play in the Pan Am Games because they had been entered in the Chinese Taipei GPG. The text of the regulation says a player withdrawing after the M&Q has been released 'will not allow him to enter in any other tournament with overlapping dates'. Obviously, in the case of the Canadians, they did try to actively enter. This case is different in that there will be an invitation from the BWF, which the players weren't sure they would receive and which they can only decline with a US$5,000 penalty. Still, accepting a Dubai invitation certainly seems to fit the definition of 'enter another tournament'.
Surely an interesting case, but what makes me wonder is why Japan and Korea officials register their players to America while its almost certain the player will qualify for Dubai even before the start of registration?
In the end, rules are not perfect and infallible. They can be changed by those who make them, if they need to.
the tournaments were well aware of the potential w/d of the players if they qualified for dubai. nobody was surprised. the entry deadlines in the other tournaments & ss finals qualification deadline overlap. it can't be helped because you can't put the worldwide tournament circuit on hold for the ss finals, because the bwf calendar is full.
