When my friend hits a birdie that's high it flies to the back of me but not out.

How do I get a strong hit back to him without getting the birdie to fly up again because it's not strong and also it can enable my friend to smack

If your friend is accurate with his clears and always hits near your baseline, I say in general that you need two skills at least; your baseline-to-baseline clear (i like to think of it as a "counter-clear") and your drop shot.

I think what you mean by not hitting it high so that he can smack it down on you, you probably mean returning the bird to his midcourt? That is true, if you do that, he will have a good chance of smashing on you, but you should not dismiss high shots. If you can practice the technique and get the strength to clear to his baseline, that is also a "high shot" but it will not give him as much opportunity to smash. A counter-clear will basically put him in the same situation as you.

Or, you could use drop shots and attack his net.

Which one you chose depends on your positioning and his positioning.

There are other alternatives, such as drives and such, but I'd say basics first, get your base-to-base clear and your drop sharpened, and the situation should turn around.

train ur front to back footwork :)

if ur footwork is fast enough, the shuttle shouldn't be behind u when u take it. generally, when a shuttle is behind u, its very hard to play a good shot.

Very good point! Though you can sorta hit shots behind you, your power and recovery time will be significantly deminished; take the bird in front of you.

    I know the answer...

I've done this many times in my games against weaker players.
When the bird goes behind me, I'd turn around and make sure the bird is in front of my body, so my opponent can't see it, make a fake swing (totally miss it, you opponent will think the rally is over and relax), at the last moment, hit it between your legs. I've won many points with this shot. Works best if you can hit the shot cross court. The fake swing is very important because it distracts your opponent. This is considered a last resort shot. :) :p :D
