Hi ! During training tonight it occured that a smash was returned so short that the shuttle just dropped before crossing the net. Awaiting the return the smashing player stood so close to the net that his toes had crossed the line and the shuttle fell on his foot. In short : The defending player couldn't return the shuttle back over the net into the attacking players field, but the attacking player touched the shuttle, before it touched the floor. Which player gets the point ? Sincerely, Joachim.
The rally ends when the bird doesn't go over the net and starts falling down onto the court... so in this case the smasher gets the point.
/WRONG My understanding would be that, the defender gets the point. Why? I think it is the same as hitting the shuttle before it has crossed the net, which is a fault; the shuttle might not even cross the net but if you hit it anyway, it is still a fault. /WRONG Just saw visor's post, hence the edit.
Another who gets the point question: Today, I smashed the birdie... which hit the net cord, it then did some weird thing tumbling over and getting stuck in the net. It was stuck on my opponent's side. Now, who gets the point? or do we replay?
According to rule 15.1 the rally ends right then, so hitting the smasher's shoe is after the fact. SHUTTLE NOT IN PLAY* A shuttle is not in play when: 15.1 it strikes the net or post and starts to fall towards the surface of the court on the striker's side of the net;
As you describe it, and according to 14. LETS; 14.2.3.2 "after the service is returned, the shuttle is : after passing over the net and is caught in the net;" So a "let" should be called, and point replayed.
Ah, I reread the OP, seems like the bird didn't even touch the net or the ground ... Since the bird hasn't touched the ground or the net yet so the rally isn't over yet , and instead touched the smasher's shoe that had invaded over. So of course still the defender gets the point. The important point here is when did the rally end... when it touched the shoe. Waiting for some umpires to chime in...
Meaning the shuttle didn't cross over the net? Assume this, the smashing player reach over the net and hit the shuttle down to his foot. It is already a fault if the smashing player invades an opponent's court over the net with racket. So shuttle hit his foot is irrelevent. If a high, above the net, drop with 50-50 chance of crossing over the net. Is it a fault if the opponent hit the shuttle.
Not necessary; you got it all right . The rationale for this setup in the rules is that it's not upon the umpires to decide how the shuttle would fly - that's why we or the line judges only call out when the shuttle lands, even if it's 5 meters out of the court.
Just to avoid misunderstanding : 1) P1 smashes the birdie. 2) The birdie flys over the net. 3) P2 returns the birdie. 4) The return is to short and the birdie falls down without having passed the net, so it's still in P2's field. 5) Before touching the floor, it touches P1's foot, who is just standing there. 6) P1 doesn't touch the birdie with his racket again ! Regards, Joachim.
Tks! Yep, the bird is still in play until it touches the ground. But before it did that, it touches P1's foot, that's a fault on P1, hence point to P2.
Ah well just checking as it wasn't stated, like the others said you lose the point as no fault had occurred untill you tried to play football on your opponents side
...my two bits worth.. Simply put, the point is not over until the shuttle hits the ground. Though unlikely to cross over the net the shuttle is still live and the person who touches it receives a fault thus losing the point. Its a lot like a shot that has been hit 6 feet outside of the sidelines. Though very unlikely to swing back into the court, you cannot touch it until it hits the ground. Most players can see and know that its out but you still cant touch it till the point is over which is when it touches the ground.
aside from the net itself, badminton is a event based game. ie. something, a contact must happen. so the shuttlecock veering out of the boundary line will still be in play until it touches something, be it the ground, or the player's racket, or the player/clothing. and the contact will determine the outcome of the rally. similarly for a shot that seemingly will drop below the net and never reaches it, it is still in play until something touches it. if it is you, then you are faulted for making contact with the shuttle using your feet. but as mentioned, the exception is the contact point over the net, in which it must be contacted at the hitter side of the net. now the next question for the readers. what if the receiver's (the smasher in OP's case) foot didn't cross the net, but the shuttle goes under the net and touches the receiver's shoe first? who gets the point then?
^ That's easy... Fault if 13.3 if in play, the shuttle: 13.3.2 fails to pass over the net between the netposts;
