Hi, so i was just looking to find information on how competitive play works. In which I mean where does someone start? what are the levels progressing from new to the competitive scene to professional. Do you progress your way through leagues? through divisions? specific tournaments?, I am just really curious as to exactly how it works, thanks for the help!

May be more beneficial for yourself to contact a local badminton club in your area and question them directly. Ask who your State or region or city's Badminton Association is and get in touch with them to question what competitions run locally etc.

Not an expert here or anything but each province in Canada has a Provincial Badminton Association as well the National one (http://www.badminton.ca). In essence, in order to compete in sanctioned tournaments (where you will earn ranking points), you have to be a member in good standing (membership can be paid anytime during the year) and if you do not have a membership card, then you will be required to pay the dues before you can compete.

Not all badminton tournaments are sanctioned so you wouldn't need to pay membership dues to compete but you won't earn ranking points. These tournaments could be organized by your local clubs or folks who just wanted to organize a tournament for the fun of it. Some tournaments will have different levels depending (e.g. beginners, intermediate, etc) or by age groups (e.g. u13, u19, u23, open, 40+, etc).

There is the recently formed UBL (https://www.facebook.com/playUBL) for league play.
