One should only make very rough judgments on the grading system. Individual placings within the ranks should not have great emphasis placed on them. Each institution has different strengths and weaknesses. It is often difficult to seperate teaching and research. The university employs lecturers to do both, but a great researcher may not be able to put the same output if the teaching commitment is onerous. Yet, departmental funding is based on research output. People have to make their own judgements. An undergrad may want a top undergrad programme with research not such a priority. A Phd candidate will look at the research output and relevant impact of the output (as well as their interests). Of course, that doesn't mean NUS or HKU are equivalent to Harvard (i wish it were though)
UQ! Top 50!! My friend who couldn't speak correct English and couldn't even graduate from Form 5 in HK got in there. You know these guys were not ranking Us; they just r***d University all over the world(including the UK U)!!!!
I suggest you compare the number of patents that come from Melbourne or Monash and compare to ANU, actually there's no comparison. ANU is realistically only nationally rated at politics, history and um ....
A Victorian are we now Pecheur? Must be, from your backing of anything from Victoria, plus having no personal details to state otherwise. One would think you would be proud to display 'Melbourne' or the like...obviously not
I'm a Victorian, most people here know that, however it's got nothing to do with being Victorian, I also rate UNSW or USyd far higher than ANU. Actually these days, I think UNSW in a lot of areas is becoming the best uni in Oz, though realistically it depends on what you want, Melbourne, Monash and UNSW seem to be getting better, whilst USyd seems to be stagnating which is unfortunate.
Research in social sciences, medicine... lots of fields actually, won't result in huge amounts of patents, but that doesn't mean the institution isn't strong in research does it?
I have to agree with this comment. Actually, I was quite devastated when I saw UNSW so far down the list and quite far behind the rest of the Australian Us. My second son is doing his bachelor finals there. But on the other hand, he could not make it to our local U, therefore going overseas is one option. I hope Pecheur is right about UNSW, otherwise my boy will find it difficult to find a respectable job!
Loh Congratulations on your second son for studying in the UNSW! It's one of the Top three U in the Kangaroo Nation. Depending on the rating criteria, UNSW always get in the First, Second or third , seldom below top 5 within Aus. The Top paying occupations: Lawyer, Public Accounting(big 4), Investment Banking, Doctors, Engineering etc have very high concern with the real performance of U. With same pay, these employers will try to get the best quality graduate. UNSW is one of the hot. Those guy who tried to rank U really doesn't know U well or they are just SPY who want to make UK look bad. They did a lousy job.
Some of ANU Achivements: - Nobel Price winner in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 is Phd student at that time (prof now) Rolf Zinhernagel and Prof Peter Doherty from ANU, John Curtin School of Medical Research. - In Engineering, Largest Magnetic Generator ever been made and tested at ANU Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering. - In Engineering, the first fastest shock tunnel up to 20X speed of sound built by the Physics Dept at ANU. Where NASA space shuttle program often use the facility. And Queensland University Mechanical Dept also later built the larger version. - Queensland U and ANU joint research and successfully launch Scramjet engine. This engine is for next generation of Space shuttle.

I have to question the actual integrity of comparing universities from different countries and cultures on a single scale. As an example, how would you meaningfully compare eastern and western medicine? As for asking academics which institution they believe to be the best, that is nothing more than a popularity contest. In such a contest the US is always going to dominate with the UK running a distant second. From memory the last assessment performed in the UK placed Oxford 6th, but it remains the best known institution throughout the international community. This list appears contentious within each country so international comparison is meaningless. Afterall, what is important? Attracting the most number of foreign students is another poor measure. Countries and institutions have very different policies on welcoming such students to their institutions. For, example the advent of the EU has had a huge effect on the intake of international students in UK universities, but it is not possible to factor this into the results.
I suppose there 'must be a pay back period' depending on the terms and conditions of the scholarship. But at least the holder is sure of a decent job. And this is much appreciated during difficult economic times.
Suprising for me that University of Waterloo isn't on the list! Well at least UW is first in "Comprehensive" on Macleans[macleans.ca].
Yes, this list shocks the world indeed. U Waterloo is at least better than UC Berkely. But Berkerly beats most U in the World that are far superior to it. I believe it was comprised by spy just to mock the British.
What about brandname? Which Australian University is more recognisable to the less knowledgable public? ANU, Melbourne, Sydney, Monash? (and in which order?)
I didn;t even know there was a University of NSW until I met some graduates from there. That's why it didn't make my list. I had heard of Sydney, Melbourne, Monash before.....
