Chinese calls it a ball. the German call it a ball. better to break some geometric law than to sound ridiculous!!
There existed the possibility of giving the shuttlecock some more pizazz with an exotic translation. But the results are not promising. None of these is particularly catchy. Nor euphonious. In fact, you may need to take out 'tongue insurance' before attempting the Welsh: Pennata cortex - (feathered cork, Latin) Delikata kuglo - (delicate bullet, Esperanto) Gwydd cyflym - (quick goose, Welsh) "Shuttle" is looking better and better all the time.
whats wrong with shuttle? That's what everyone at my club & almost everyone I know says. My old coach used to call them birds
I speak french and here, the slang English equivalent term for it is "birdie". The correct term in french is "volant", which I guess would directly translate to "flying thing" Both flying thing and birdie sound good to me
is birdie that much better than shuttlecock? i have at least a couple of times an American come up to me giving a funny look and ask if we call that thing a "birdie".
I don't see why birdie wouldn't be better It's a common term and even used in golf! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birdy Also, we all know USA people are ignorant when it comes to badminton, I'm pretty sure they'd have the same reaction with any word.
Anyone who calls it birdie should be shot on the spot If ever there was a sissy word for shuttlecock, it is birdie. [no offence but that word shouldn't make it passed the recreational game] "Pass me the birdie!" "Say what?" "Pass the birdie" "Oh this thing?! I thought you asked me to get your skirt." Shuttle Shuddle.
I don't know, we better get a name change soon. ...You know how badminton uses strokes to hit shuttles... well, some people might mistake that as stroking the cock.
Yah, you must be using flexy shaft... it's gotta be extra stiff in order for the cock to be stroked properly.
Damn, I thought it was rated very stiff. I hope it's still on warranty....Yeah... This is why the thing needs to be renamed ASAP!!!
The full name is badminton shuttlecock. Let make it short. How about BADshuttle--- no no it sounds bad and might not fly well. How about MINTshuttle--- this might be OK. Or SPEEDY? Just leave the "cock" out of the above suggestions.
I believe that the best feathers come from cock geese . I believe that the best feathers come from cock geese, and not from the hen geese. That's why we call them shuttlecock.
