This bit of news I came across in a paper that the powers be in the Olympics are considering dropping Badminton from the 2012 London games! Apparently, this game is played in only a few countries around the world!! Maybe it is time for the Badminton playing nations to pump in more dosh into this sport.
you sure about that?? they still have badminton on the london 2012 website http://www.london2012.com/sports/olympic/badminton.php
I think badminton isn't out from London2012 program but this sport may find difficult time to keep its chance to become one Summer Olympic sport at 2016 OG. BWF must do significant action to make badminton more popular worldwide, particularly outside Asia region.
the "news article" that you read was probably published on bc on april first. it was a fun april fools joke
I don't think it's April fools joke. At the Asia Badminton Championship, the commentator did say that the Olympic Committee are considering dropping Badminton and Judo.
the commentator youre referring tois one of the most ridiculed commentators ever. the comment he made came from sources originating in this website and but he obviously didnt dig deep enough to find that it was an april fool's joke. badminton is and will remain a summer olympics sport.
I wonder when will this end??!!! This April Fool joke is no longer funny...... in fact it's getting irritating! I think it should be removed from the homepage of BadmintonCentral to prevent any further misunderstanding! Or at least state clearly in the report (since 1st April is long over) that it is an April Fool's joke! I don't think many people bothered to click on the links at the bottom of the report...... not that obvious anyway.
i fully agree with this!!!!!!!! its not funny at all anymore..! furthermore, the news is on badmintoncentral.com homepage!! wonder what will ppl think of.. if the news is fake!
This joke may turn reality if we keep talking. And they might want to consider this suggestion . So,stand up straight and say - We do Not Agree!
Badminton opposed to 2012 switch Badminton has joined boxing in opposing a switch to Wembley Arena at the 2012 London Olympics. Mayor of London Boris Johnson wants the sport played at Wembley rather than a proposed temporary venue near the Olympic Park in Stratford. "Our intention is to stay in the Olympic Park or be as close to the Park as we can," said Badminton England's chief executive Adrian Christy. "We are not encouraging conversation about using Wembley Arena." Badminton England believes playing at Wembley would damage competitors performances due to the travelling time that will be required from the athletes' village in Stratford. Johnson, whose office is contributing £1.175bn to the overall Olympics budget, has rejected plans to build the 6,000-seat North Greenwich Arena 2, which would also accommodate rhythmic gymnastics as well as badminton The mayor's office believes costs could be reduced if badminton and rhythmic gymnastics were moved, and if shooting was switched from Woolwich Barracks to Barking. "I think the mayor's position is quite clear," said the mayor's Olympics adviser Neale Coleman. "I don't think he thinks anyone will understand why on earth we would spend tens of millions of pounds on putting up something temporary which will be scrapped after the Games when we have such a good facility as Wembley." "I don't think the public will understand at a time when everyone knows we need restraint in public spending that we should be spending money unnecessarily on what is already a huge investment programme for the Olympics." Badminton England has the backing of its international governing body, the Badminton World Federation. ^^Sounds like..^^ ..it's the same ol', same ol' conundrum, in every Olympics.. If i were the Olympics organizer, i'd find ways to use existing sports halls.. Even now, Beijing is struggling to maintain the humongous Bird's Nest..
if i were uk badminton, i would ok the wembley stadium on the condition that 1/2 of money saved goes to uk badminton development
badminton in Wembley wouldn't be too bad. although the stadium might be a bit too big. but then again, a crowd of.... 60,000++++? that's good!
Don't think it's the stadium they're talking about. It's the arena that's just beside the stadium. This arena is where previous All England tournaments were held.
