geram Ya lor... maybe because of the 'geram' mentality. hantam... kuat2... Am sure the likes of other Perak players are familiar with his smashes. Those days were the likes of Terence Tim, Jacob, Fung Seng, Chong Weng Kai and another older KKK. I think Soon Kit win. Not sure if the same person we are talking about.
very well written! i'm actually his fan!! i fall in love with him the first time i watched him on thomas cup 1992, even before he took down the game with soo beng kiang just becoz he looks so good with all his jumping smashes! love your summary!
CSK had two 'weaker' aspects of his game. Service (hence that story of flick serves) and also net play not as strong as others. In the old days, you cannot win a point without serving. In doubles, it's very difficult to win against good receivers of the shuttle. I think this gave teh edge to their opponents. Otherwise CSK would have been on the winners rostrum a lot more.

I feel that if Soon Kit had controlled his temper he would have made a better player. His low services were non-existent and were easily tapped by opponents. When he lifted his serve he got creamed. His partner had to cover for him most of the time. Kim Hock was a good cushion for Soon Kit..could take all the abuses Soon Kit dished out. Soon Kit's main weapon was his leaping smash..and it was fantastic. But opponents knew that and seldom gave him the chance. Saw him during the Thomas Cup finals when he partnered Soo Beng Kiang..they were practically growling at each other. Wondered when they would fall apart. But when they won all were forgotten.
Keeping this thread alive for the oldies. But to see how badminton developed is to look back in history. Cheah was innovative with no less tribute by Stanley Guew assistant coach to the Indonesian who lost in 1988: "He has come up with one or two innovative strokes which we will study closely....We were very proud when Liem Swee King developed the leaping smash. But Soon Kit has gone one step further. He leaps high up into the air and then has several option in his arsenal. Smash, chop, drop, lob, you don't know what to expect." http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=x8G803Bi31IC&dat=19880602&printsec=frontpage&hl=en
Blow for Soon Kit New role: Cheah Soon Kit is now in charge of the Under-21 squad. Cheah Soon Kit’s reign as the men’s doubles head coach lasted only 13 months. The 50-year-old former Olympic silver medalist was “demoted” as the Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM) coaching and training committee (CNT) reshuffled the men’s doubles coaching set-up again. Taking over his position is Paulus Firman of Indonesia. Meanwhile, Soon Kit has been put in charge of the Under-21 squad. Paulus, who rejoined the BAM in March, is the third coach to make the grade as the head coach after Rosman Razak and Pang Cheh Chang. Rosman and Cheh Chang were promoted to head the women’s doubles and mixed doubles as replacements for Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui early this year. CNT chairman Datuk Ng Chin Chai said the decision was made to beef up the men’s doubles squad as they had made little progress under Soon Kit’s charge. “Changing the men’s doubles head coach is a way for the national men’s doubles to move forward,” said Chin Chai. “We observed Paulus since he joined us and we believe the men’s doubles department has performed better under his leadership.” The decision, however, came as no surprise. Soon Kit has been handling the back-up squad since May and Paulus has been coaching the elite players prior to the Thomas Cup Finals in Thailand. It is learnt that Soon Kit lost the trust of his players and several seniors had met up with the BAM’s management demanding for a change of head coach. Chin Chai did not elaborate but said the decision was based on recent performances of the coaches. “At the BAM, we don’t give in to players’ demand,” stressed Chin Chai. “We evaluate the coaches based on their ability as well as their working relationship with players." “We placed Soon Kit in charge of the Under-21 squad because he has done very well in getting the best out of the young shuttlers.” The other coach in the men’s doubles is Vountus Indra Mawan Saniru. There is indeed an urgency to fast track the development of younger pairs as there are only four established pairs in the squad currently. They are world No. 13 Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin (22), Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (44) and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani-Goh Sze Fei (47). None of them have won a title this year. [Source]
Too bad. No one can take the heat or 4 letter word from him. Only juniors can tolerate or scared of him. Need to bodoh do what was instructed. The seniors too lcly or proud to take the pressure or tough workout. No future. Normally a hard hitting player got problem with service. Same for lcw. No other singles player works as hard as him. Mana boleh??
the players during LCW junior (pre-2003) time are training real hard unlike the current one, because that time no social media such as facebook & instagram...
