Singles seen as weak link in mixed badminton team event
KUALA LUMPUR: The singles players are expected to be the weak link for Malaysia in their quest for honours in the mixed team event of the World Junior Badminton Championships, which begins today in Pune, India.

But debutant Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin is not ready to throw in the towel although China and South Korea have better singles players in their ranks.

In fact, the 17-year-old Iskandar is hoping that his first world junior meet would be the launching pad for a greater journey ahead in his badminton career.

Iskandar is one of the four boys’ singles players in the Malaysian team. The others are Mohd Syawal Mohd Ismail, Kuan Kam Chung and Goh Soon Huat.

“This is my first world junior meet and I am looking forward to giving it my best,” said the Asean Schools boys’ singles champion.

“The real challenge will come when we are up against players from China and South Korea.

“But this is an opportunity for the singles players to justify our selection by the coaches.”

On paper, Malaysia’s strength lies in the doubles department.

This was evident at this year’s Asian Junior Championships in Kuala Lumpur when Malaysia bagged the boys’ doubles title through Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang while the girls’ and mixed doubles players performed creditably.

At the world junior meet in Auckland last year, Malaysia suffered a shock defeat to Singapore in the quarter-finals of the mixed team event.

But they made amends by bagging one individual title through Lim Khim Wah-Ng Hui Lin in the mixed doubles.

This year, Malaysia are the fourth seeds and are in Group X1 with the Czech Republic and Germany. In the quarter-finals, they are expected to play against Indonesia, who are in Group X2.

If Malaysia make the semi-finals, they are set to face top seeds China, who are in Group W

I think both Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan are the semifinalists of WJC 2000 in Guangzhou where Bao Chunlai was World Junior Champ at that time, beat Sony Dwi Kuncoro in final.
