The Japanese players and coach did call for the referee and did talk to him, but with no resolution. It was as if they didn't even have a talk.

I was about to say the same thing, if he watched matches during 2015 when Gillian Clark commenting, Mrs. Clark said it over and over that players should have more than two challenges per matches, just like in tennis. I think She even officially suggested BWF to add more challenges and when finally BWF applied new rule, she is very excited about it.

just finished rewatching the game, errors made in the match:
    1. the BWF should not have let a chinese umpire in a game involving chinese players.
    2. the head referee should be in the hall always, I guess he was off having tea, the deputy was useless.
    3. the japanese coach should have protested by stopping the match.
    4. the referee did not have full knowledge of the rules, why the CBA let him be the umpire?
