To all stringer out there, Here is a question I would like to pose to you. I would like to get your opinion on this. A good friend came over and ask you to string 8 community shared (used out door during picnic and cost less than $20 per set of 4 including the net) cheapo racquets to restring. He/she ask you to string with any strign you have for $5 each and they do not want to buy new racquet. You stringed first one with free sample you got from some manufacture. You run out of the free or cheap strings. No way you can get more free or cheap string in 24hr to finish the other 7 raquets and it is due the next day. The local sporting store has 50lb, 24 gauge fishing line for sale for $5 for 200M. Will you consider using the fishing line and finish the rest of the racquet OK or not? Will you tell your friend that it is fishing line and the old string on the crappy racquet is the same or not say anything or just say you can not do it... FYI, I did buy the fishing line and finished the job and tell him that the old string is worse than the fishing line.
I would tell them first that you don't have any strings for $5 or cheaper for more than 1 racket, but if I go to a fishing store the fishing string should do the job required for lower price- then see wht they say. Were you doing this for free? if not, then surely he would have been better buying new rackets?
if possible i would try to contact the person and give them their options and see which one they would go for.
I think you preserved their intention of (1) cheap, and (2) 24 hr deadline, by whichever means necessary. I don't think quality is an issue. Were they out-of-reach or was it late at night that you couldn't call them up and asked, when the reel ran out? -dave
i believe fishing lines are outdoor rated while NBG98 isn't 24 gauge is still quite narrow, u shoulda gotten 20 gauge. One can't fully comprehend what would kids do to a badminton racket in a picnic
Maaaan, Silent One, you run into the weirdest situations. Since it's outdoor/recreational, people cannot tell, just do it. In fact, I would want that because in this instance, I'd rather have string that will never break than to have string that will eventually break.
yup - given that they are for outdoor use, I think they would probably appreciate a string that last and last more than a proper badminton string.
If I were stuck in that situation I would go with the fishing line. Didn't you find it difficult stringing with that? I've used 50lb line and the most difficult part (other than the BB puller notching and breaking the line) was weaving the crosses. The line is smooth and rigid compared to regular string. I would not have accepted that in the first place. $5 each? Slave labour :`)
Good job there, Master SH. I would do exactly the same as you. I would even tell the friend that the fishing line will last a lot longer compare to the real badminton string. If your friend gave you any looks other than appreciative, then you have a weird friend.
Thank you all for replaying. 1) the community does not want to have 16 racquets and 4 nets sitting around in storage. So I decided to charge them for $5 each labor only. 2) Actually, this is an old gentalman who I know pretty well and it is for his community picnic evet. 3) I actually got them on Thursday and picnic was on Sunday. If was just I did not realize I am out of string till Sat morning and I can not get any cheap string on time. That was my fault. 4) To master cooler, there is no shark in Lake Michigan, so the heaviest I can find is 24g with 50lb rating. 5) FYI all, I think the fishing line held up OK. Or I would have hear from my friend and we would have laugh our @$$ off. 6) Yep, the fishing line is a little slippery. However, I did not need to pay too much attention to the drop weight and speed up the process a lot more. This did teach me a lessen. Do inventory of your accessary often so you know what you have on hand. In this case, I have to pull string out of my @$$...
Kinda off topic... I mean, if $5 per racket, then 4 racket (1set) is already $20. They are willing to pay $20 for re-string, but not dump the old set, and pay $20 for a brand new set. Of course, with master SH's work, it's priceless.
