Agreed, although I don't condone smoking, but to me as long as they are still producing the goods it doesn't matter what their preferences for relaxations and enjoyment off the courts.

If these players do not smoke, they not only can play well but can play better, why handicap themselves by smoking which has no good benefits except a really bad and expensive habit.

Well, alot of indos or player from other country who don't smoke but they still lost to them anyway.... I guess, they have alot of pressure on them since badminton is the only sport that really compete with the world in indo...And Cigarettes are really cheap in indo...so that doesn't really matter to them...At least they dont'do drugs...

Hehe..cigarette in indo is not really cheap nowadays though. The price is rising n rising.U wanna talk cheap?CHINA!!haha..in beijing,i've seen a pack of cigarette that's sold for 1 rmb in the market(USD 15cents).Well..that probably the worst one.But the avg one in the market is only around 5 rmb(USD 70cents).

I guess stressness is not the reason why they smoke.I guess they're all youngsters..got lots of friends outside.I guess that's where they get their habits from. Some got it when they r young n naughty. Some, social smokers..

Yeah in China the price of cigarettes is very wide ranging... from the completely mediocre ones for 1 rmb to over 500 rmb per pack.
There is just way too much people smoking in China... The absolutely funniest thing is on the packets of some cigarettes in china it says 'Thank you for purchasing this pack of cigarettes, by doing this 1 rmb is donated to the poor and foodless children in poverty stricken areas. Thank you for your kindness and care' Or something along those lines... I found it quite hilarious where as its complete contrast to the Australian policy which shows graphic images of the bad effects caused by smoking.

Undoubtedly, gory anecdotes and marketing secrets make for fascinating reading.
But we're not here to reveal our take on smoking or lament our fling with it

This sub-forum is about professional players ;)

they didnt want to smoke or take drugs either, but the pressure during trainings and competitions is too much for them to handle.

i dont know about other countries' pros, but thats what my chinese coach (ex-china pro) told me.

I don't think people really want to smoke. Almost all smokers got into smoking either out of peer pressure or wanting to make a personal statement that they are their own man or woman when young, with some thinking that they could switch it off if they wanted to. Smoking is like taking drugs, in fact far worse because there is no crime against smoking.
I believe most of the top rank badminton players who smoke got into the habit in circumstances not unlike the above. With nicotine in their blood stream, which is a very powerful habit forming drug, they will surely reach out for a smoke to calm their nerves or to join in the fun and joy of success.

i agree that athletes who smoke can still play very well but i also agree that if they did not smoke, they could play better than well. but i guess sometimes the urge to smoke overruled the common sense that smoking is not helping in their professional sport career and in fact might even be detrimental to it. i know people who smoke, and even though i dont smoke (and i tried when i was younger, thank goodness i hated it) i can truly understand the difficulty in quitting. it is just easier sometimes to give in to temptation.
