taken from BWF BWF SUPER SERIES - DENMARK OPEN 2007 China take four titles 29 October 2007 By Yves Lacroix. Pix by BadmintonPhoto.com China once again showed its superiority in world badminton by clinching 4 of the 5 titles at stake at the 2007 Denmark Open. Malaysians Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong survived the sweep by beating Danish runner-ups Jens Eriksen and Martin Lundgaard in three games. In singles, Lin Dan and Lu Lan climbed onto the top step of the podium while compatriots Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen were given a scare by Koreans Lee and Lee in the women's doubles. On the other hand, He Hanbin and Yu Yang won their first Super Series title in mixed doubles. He Hanbin and Yu Yang are certainly a pair to watch in the future. Their win in Saturday's semi-finals might not have been the most convincing one, but in the final, they proved that they could beat any pair in the world. Indeed, the Chinese started strong against the English pair of Nathan Roberston and Gail Emms and snatched the first game 21-17. In the second game, the English used basic mixed doubles strategy to its fullest by allowing Robertson to power from the back for her partner to finish at the net. However, that system felt short in the deciding game when Yu's defence became more successful than Robertson's attack. The English got a few points behind from the early start and were never able to recover to lose the match 21-17, 19-21, 21-17. A lot of things have changed since Bao Chunlai beat Lin Dan 7-5, 7- 1, 7-0 at the 2001 edition of this tournament. This time, Lin Dan didn't have to do much to dominate compatriot Bao. The latter often got caught deep in his backhand and his fate became obvious when he became impatient. Lin easily stamped his authority to climb onto the top step of the podium. His 21-15, 21-12 win earned him a check of US$16,000, the highest prize money offered at this tournament. In the men's doubles final, Danes Jens Eriksen and Martin Lundgaard got a laugh when the tournament announcer had a slight mishap and announced Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia as their opponents. That mistake aside, it was indeed Malaysians Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong who had the last laugh in the most-awaited match of the day. Not only was it the only match involving Danish players, but it was also a battle of the generations, an average of fifteen years separating players from both teams. The first game was punctuated by a series of mistakes from both sides, neither team really getting into the match. The Danes really started to break away when their attacking play repeatedly pierced through the Malaysian defence. Eriksen and Lundgaard bagged the first game 21-14 with a flick serve that put Koo into trouble. It would be one of the very last mistakes made by Koo. Indeed, the wind changed in the following games when the dispirited Danes lost their way and let the Malaysians storm back to take the match 14-21, 21-14, 21-12. "Koo really made the difference in the 2nd and 3rd sets", confirmed Jens Eriksen in his post-match interview. "His serves were very good and it was impossible to avoid him. He seemed to be everywhere at the same time", added partner Lundgaard. "We really believed we could win but we're still happy with the results since we haven't played this well in 6 months", concluded Eriksen. The women's singles final was a dull affair to watch with Zhang Ning clearly uncomfortable in her movement on court. Due to her thigh injudry, the Olympic champion could barely race forward to retrieve dropshots made by her opponent. Lu Lan had no trouble in winning the match 21-17, 21-14. Despite her opponent's poor resistance, the 2007 winner of the Denmark Open nevertheless expressed her satisfaction: "It's the first time I beat Zhang Ning. I played well all week and I feel good about the victory," said Lu. "Zhang Ning and Xie Xingfang are the best players in the world and I still lack experience. They are idols to me and I hope to be as good as them one day." The few fans left for the last final were rewarded with the best match of the day. Koreans Lee Hyo Jung and Lee Lyung Won really started strong and stunned Chinese Yang Wei and Zhang Yiewen 21-12 to take the first game. The Chinese attacks were neutralised by the Koreans' excellent returns and the latter seemed on their way to a rather easy victory but the Chinese fought back and grabbed the second game 21-19. The third game displayed some of the best badminton played all week at the Denmark Open. The Chinese took the lead but the Koreans were once again able to stamp their authority with their brillant defence and got two points away from the title. At 19-17 in the Korean's favour, Lee Hyo Jung sent an easy half-court smash out of bounds and Yang and Zhang never looked back and closed out the match 12-21, 21- 19, 21-19.
