BEIJING : China's chief badminton coach Li Yongbo said Tuesday world champion Lin Dan's poor showing was the only blot on an otherwise fine performance at the just-ended world team championships.

China won the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships for a record sixth time after beating Indonesia 3-0 in the final in Scotland on Sunday.

Lin was one of the dead rubbers and was not needed in the final but his contribution in earlier stages of the event raised issues about his commitment and tactical awareness, the coach said.

"Lin now lacks the passion on court, this was one of his best qualities he presented in past events," Li said, according to Xinhua news agency.

"We had a discussion. He thought the result was the most important thing, but the coaches are concerned about the process as well. He needs to win every match even though the result has been decided."

Li was referring to Lin's shock defeat in a preliminary stage tie against Malaysia. China won the match 4-1 but Lin's dropped rubber against the Asian champion Chong Wei Lee ensured that the team failed to win all rubbers in a Sudirman Cup tie for the first time since the 2003 final.

Lin's apparent loss of heart comes at a bad time, with the Olympic Games in Beijing next year.

In a veiled warning to Lin, coach Li said victory in the cup was important but it was also a significant event in the run-up to the Beijing Games.

"Lin needs to maintain his momentum and raise his game before the 2008 Olympics," he said.

When you've been such a dominant and superior player for over 3 years and when you've won almost every title (except the olympics) it's sure hard to keep the passion. If the fun of winning doesn't mean satisfaction anymore, the only thing which is left is the pure fun of playing. And to be criticized by your team chef might not be the kind of positive motivation you need in such a situation. Somehow I fear that we'll all witness Lin's slow downfall from now on - but let's see.

I wish LYB uses more positive approach to LD....There is no way one player keeps winning even Federer or Radal loses once a while....plus other players have same quality and skills like LD......LYB should know as himself did not win all matches when he was active in MD...got beaten many times by INA as well as MAS.

It's tough if the coach is also the boss. Even some people accused Federer trying to take a break by losing in early rounds in some tournments this year. If Federer's coach criticize him, the coach will be fired. Poor Lin Dan can't do that.

It is hard for LD to accept that he had played well but still being accused that he had no heart to play for China...thats quite an insult...I could not imagine that INA said that to TH..trust me..TH will quit and move to Singapore right away.....

LYB should know that LCW is not one level below LD as he had beaten him already before....so who is ready at that time,,,...morelikely he will be winning the match,,.....

I am sure if Lin Dan continues to slide then Li Yongbo will change his tune to softer version, besides Lin Dan who else can the China rely on consistently?

neither is chen jin which had beaten taufik, PG, LCW before.
I say let CJ, Chen Yu, and bcl play more and shape up for the 08 OG. I rather have 4 very good guns at 08 OG than relying just one cannon. I say LYB should let LD relax and work on the other 3 MS players instead. If other 3 do wells, it would put pressure LD to do well anyway. I would concentrate on LD in spring 2008. To LYB, it doesnt matter who win 08 OG title(s), as long as they are his lil solidiers:p

My take is that LYB believes only in LD, and if I were LYB, so would I. I am sure LYB was not insulting when he made that comment, maybe just reverse psychology to perk LD up to full potential.

We keep talking about the abundance of talent in CHN MS squad, but so far LD is the only one among the CHN 4 MS that takes things seriously and hardly ever fail. Even Morten Frost commented that he enjoys watching LD because LD has the ability to learn, and adapt his tactics in-game.

Even more so, I believe that LD is like a captain to the rest of the CHN MS, how would you feel if your captain falls in battle? BCL, CJ, CY, when the burden is on them, they can't go all the way. We have seen that in MAS, SIN and INA Super Series. It goes without saying that if LD was out in earlier rounds or didn't compete, the rest weren't able to take charge .....

Beating Taufik, LCW, Gade is one thing, winning titles is quite another. Just ask Bao and Chen Yu. Chen Jin was fortunate in Swiss Open, LD didn't lose until he had to retire midway into MS semis. But by the time in SIN and INA Open, Chen Jin didn't even clear the early rounds.

I beg to differ. As far as consistency is concerned, LD is the still best choice. I can understand why LYB is trying so hard to protect LD from suffering the loss of confidence by losing games. Not all players dealt calmly with when they lost games when they should had won. Just ask LCW when he lost to BCL and his form had dipped since then.

With the Olympics08 is around the corner, LD is still the best bet. No disrespect to CJ and BCL, but LD is still more consistent with winning matches are crucial stages. Anyway, the gold medal is still in LYB's bag. It's just a matter of who winning it...

Nothing but Olympic Gold, this is LD mindset now. He had collected numerous titles from All England to World Champ including team-competition such as Thomas and Sudirman Cup leading role. Exactly, LD has heavy burden in all tourneys because LYB always depends on him to win it. Also LD is the target-man for all shuttlers because his status, this condition certainly brings him towards saturated point.

BCL,CJ and CY actually have good qualities too but LYB never trust them. Why LYB never play CJ or BCL during SC/07?? It's very wierd decision. Even INA rested TH for match against HKG and gave MS place to Sony.

Not meant to discredit LCW who played very well and prove his win in IO07 is no fluke, and that is good news for MAS fans and badminton fan alike...I notice LD did not do his dive when retrieving shots...either he is not interested in Sudirman tourney (no MS trophy to win) or off form or he is not 100% fit...hey TH too is not interested in team sport esp when his team has no chance of winning and TH played a lacklustre game too (watch TC06)...well one game lost and LD seems like finished...WC may favour LCW on home soil and I would love to see LCW be the first MAS WC but OG08 in Beiging, LD is still the one to beat... no kidding about that!!!:p

Frankly i dont care whether LD is playing his best in the Sudirman match against LCW. Am just happy for LCW finally shred his Jaguh Kampung tag and be able to slap LYB's face by beating LD outside Msia. Remember LYB use to boast that LCW wont hv a chance beating LD in neutral ground

That is fair comment...if you are chosen to play MS for your country, there should be no excuse for losing, and I ain't forming excuse for LD, just that LD is not playing the way he usually play. As for LCW, he play a very focus game plan, LCW hardly show any emotion when winning points i.e. no fist pumping and LCW only showed emotion when the game concluded...sure LCW has a game plan going from IO07...great to see and hope for MAS in WC07 and anytime LCW can beat LD and TH, that is great for his confidence...agree with you.

come on LYB is just finding excuse for LD's loss, to save face for China
Honestly LCW was just on fire that day, there's nothing much LD can do
To be saying LD lost passion on court thats whole lot of rubbish, I can see LD is still very determined to win on court or else he wont even bother about bad line calls during that match against LCW

Compare LCW vs Lin Dan and KKK/TBH vs Fu/Cai, I think Lin Dan put out much more effort and try to win as compare to the the Malaysian pair.

Lin Dan may be passionless but his mindset is to win, so of course he would still want to win even though hes deeply out of form and mind is not fully focused.

He will be back and owning the badminton MS world soon enough
