The Hakko is not a bad plier. Both the Xuron and the Hakko managed to pulled out a string from a blocked hole with just a tiny bit of string protruding.

The Hakko has a much nicer grip material and thus feel, the string is solid and the two pieces of the plier move very smoothly despite a much tighter tolerance than the Xuron. It feels expensive despite the price.

The Xuron is much less secure in comparison, and it was like that since new. The two parts of the pliers are loose with poor tolerances at the joint. Flimsy and thin material but the serrated jaw was the key to choosing it.

What is not perfect about the Hakko is it has a wider jaw which takes some getting used to after using the Xuron for so many years. It makes it less maneuverable between small string gaps. If the Hakko has a narrower jaw it will easily replace the Xuron. Right now they are just equal.

I plan to keep the Hakko and post a long term test review once I get more time with it.

The only reason I'm still using Xuron pliers is their grip color is different from my Hakko cutter so I don't have to pay much attention to distinguish them.

With all this discussion on (wire) cutters, I tried something else. At my machine, I only have some really cheap wire cutters that compress the end of the string significantly. So I tried...

... these. I originally bought them to cut some herbs. After all, they are meant for plants. Before I got to put them on my balcony, I had to cut some strings on a racket and these were laying around. It worked so well, that they immediately replaced my scissors in my badminton bag. Following this thread, I tried them as an alternative to the wire cutter and (sorry for the bad picture) they did a really good job. the cut is cleaner and the end much less compressed.

That raises the question if wire cutters are the best option for strings. These were 6€ and haven't been treated well.

After a few months with the narrower Hakko pliers, I have switched over to the Hakko. With only very rare occasions do I pick up the Xuron.

The hand feel, smoothness of the operation is a class above Xuron.

My favorite recent tools purchase that I haven't really seen on here much is a grommet grinder/turner and a grommet puller. These have greatly accelerated my grommet work. Before I was just using a screw to pull grommets and various screw drivers to turn them.[IMG]

I have seen those, pretty economical, been wanting to try those. I use the RAB grommet grinder, a little expensive and I drop them all the time =([IMG][IMG]

Can't recommend them enough; fast, light, and reasonably cheap. Thought about the RAB, since Tim Willis uses it, but it's pretty darn expensive and looks kinda slippery (which you seem to have confirmed!).

I have a grommet grinder with a similar head to the black one, I use it to push it out. =)

The green one, have you had any problems with pulling out grommets? Like maybe a racket strung with Aerosonic that has damaged the grommet from the outside. How would you rate this tools effectiveness? 100%, 99%, always works, almost always works? Arigato!

I'm looking to buy a starting clamp, but can't seem to find any useful info on these.
Anyone who could give advice where to buy a good one in Europe?

I haven't had any case where it didn't work, even for really stubborn old shared grommets. No need to cut the flared side. Even with a torn head on a shared grommet the tool bites into the shaft of it so that doesn't cause any problems. My older tool (just a screw) was a bit too large in diameter so it couldn't handle that case well.
