They already progressed to next round. Easy . Without playing a single game , they are moving forward. But have to decide the top spot. Hence , they have to play

Is the WTF to close to the WC that for players who have qualified for both tournaments, will forego the former which is less prestigious?

They're as enigmatic as Lin Dan, at this point.

Better the fastest than the most late retirement iykwim.

But but wait a minute. Maybe Momota retired from this match but he can play Axelsen?

    When is the world championships?

Momota injured his back whilst training for the WTF. I wonder whether he will recover in time for the World Championships.

They really need to look at the rules that make players show up with a known injury and play a couple points then retire. A shame both for fans and for other players that I'm sure would have loved to be there in their place. Apparently tennis has figured it out as mentioned by the commentators.

    Look at the WC draw.

Momota has seen the draw before he played WTF. ^-^ I think that's why.

So sad that Nishimoto and Momota was in the same branch

Far from the expectation in group A scenario that ended in disappoinment, both Viktor Axelsen, Laskhya Sen automatically will advance into semifinal following their two group rivals Gemke and Momota retired due injury. No thanks to the super hectic and insane schedule that stretched players into the limit and triggering injury, hopefully these two players will be recovered well in the imminent prestigious event at Huelva. In group B, Lee ZJ and Srikanth open their campaign to pocket first victory, next the Indian should wary for crucial match against Vitidsarn tomorrow considering the Malaysian is favoured to overcome Popov.

Well, almost all World Tour Finals opening day matches completed in two-straight games, home pair Jordan/Oktavianti as predicted can't thwart Thai on-fire duo despite stole second game but the Indonesian lost their rhythm and dictated by their opponents in final game. MD big match saw the very close contest between the Minions against The Olympic Champs who're not fast as they were in Tokyo while other tie in group A that dubbed as group of death, Astrup/Rasmussen won over Rankireddy/Shetty comfortably.

Well , the best I've read about this tournament. You're absolutely right! Even in normaly "non-Corona-years" the WTF in my eye's is only good for the players for the good prize money. In a year with all highlights in the tournament calendar (Olympics,Sudirman,Thomas/Uber, WC Huelva) within about five month this WTF is stupid ! Even if you look at the "newcomers" at this years WTF you will see why there are playing there. If you are worldranking about place 30 and play all qualification tournaments during the year , and you win on half of the tournaments the first round and you will win NEVER in the second round you still have enough points for this WTF.

    It's quite possible, though.
Tactical retreat and all of that stuff.

Anyone know if Japan has plans to get yuta a partner for MD? Would be shocked if he doesn't play MD again.

I haven't heard anything about it yet. But I don't think it's a good idea at this point as if you see his recent XD matches, he seems to be tired and fatigued even without having to play any MD. He doesn't seem to have the "endless" reserve of energy he used to have when playing two categories.
