SUI Open 2021 will mark 2021 season officially and the restart of Tokyo Olympic Qualifying period but surprisingly (far from expected) many top players skip this tournament according to the official entry list that published by BWF yesterday. Badminton powerhouses China and Japan continue their absence.

Approaching to drawing date, a string of top players conceded to withdraw from this first BWF Tour of 2021 - Chou Tien Chen, Anthony Ginting, Wang Tzu wei, An Se Young, Michelle Li, Lee Y/Wang CL, Choi/Seo, Polii/Rahayu, Puavarunukroh/Taerattanachai, Jordan/Oktavianti - making Basel meet less competitive.

The on-fire Viktor Axelsen will be clear favourite, he's drawn alongside INA second stringers Rhustavito, former World number one Kidambi Srikanth and 2019 WChamps bronze medalist Kantaphon Wangcharoen. Second seed Lee Zii Jia who facing criticism following lackluster performance in Asian Leg is expected to fix his temporary blip here.

Carolina Marin has great start for what she did in Bangkok and seeking sterling outcome in Europe tour. She would find tricky test Zhang Beiwen in quarters if all go to script while Pusarla Sindhu has another chance to bring back her finest touch that missing quite long time.

Bad for Badminton. Some players are just taking advantage of others absence, cant blame them. can only blame the procedures. Rankings getting taken away, Points for tournaments added twice instead of just being changed (DoubleChance) is my worry.

A little bit strange. They make the seeding from the old frozen worldranking. Tournament one week later in Germany will be the seeding from the new unfrozen worldranking.

Does anyone know why they are not competing ? Covid ? Prize money ? I see players from Taiwan are also not attending.

I just got the M&Q Report of the All England. China does not take part there either, which means that China has canceled the entire tour to Europe. Japan wanted to take part in the German Open and has also registered for England. I think Japan didn't want to send its players to Europe for the whole month and therefore only selected the two tournaments in Germany and England. I believe that this also applies to Chinese Taipei, but it's just a guess of mine! Unfortunately, the German Open was canceled yesterday. This means that the players from Japan and Chinese Taipei are now only coming to Europe for the All England.

It's already predicted last week, logically if they skip GER Open, it would be very slim chance for CHN to register their players in AE considering current pandemic circumstances plus YAE 2021 isn't part of Tokyo OG qualification round.

Korea A-listers also will not show up in Birmingham, An Se Young, Choi SG/Seo SJ, Lee SH/Shin SC, Kim SY/Kong HY, Seo SJ/Chae YJ.

It was easy guess that CHN will not send their players to England and its not just because of pandemic.

What are you talking about? What other reason would it be?

The bad thing for badminton would be to not play any tournaments at all. Sponsors and fans would abandon the sport. The show must go on. Tournaments are now being held again and that is of course only good for badminton.

Yes there will be streaming on BWF Youtube channel, but it probably starts tomorrow or later in the week I would assume. I am watching a stream from court 1 now through unibet.eu, you need an account though.
