Why Sept/Oct 2020? The Olympics won't be until Summer 2021. And why would they cancel the Olympics just because badminton tournaments can't be held? They could just cut badminton off their timetable.
This is what I meant. If badminton tournaments cannot be held in Sept/Oct 2020, that would probably mean the COVID-19 pandemic is still quite serious at that particular moment in time. Most if not all other Olympic sports (not just badminton) might also be affected. On that basis, I believe Tokyo Olympics should be or would be cancelled, not just postponed to the summer of 2021.
And if the COVID-19 situation is such at that time, then they can decide at that time whether to postpone or cancel the whole OG or not. Sent from my SM-G988W using Tapatalk
China is having almost zero local transmitted case after about 3 months of lockdown. Europe could probably follow the same path after 3 months as many countries have been in lockdown this month. now it is US seeing a huge spike but New York and other states are also going into lockdown. So if they can get it well contained in 3 months, the situation should be manageable by July or September. Tournaments might take 1 or 2 more months to be back on schedule then. Worst case scenario is a 2nd outbreak. That will be a killer blow to human lifes and their livelihood and countries' economies. All these is just my opinion, and each will have their own. Haha, even I'm thinking right now that it's pretty pointless discussing this since we are not the experts.
Yes, if Tokyo Olympics were to be cancelled, that decision will be made in late 2020. But the BWF qualification periods and tournaments for the Tokyo Olympics (if to be held in the summer of 2021) need to be decided now or at least ASAP.
The qualification period is the same for Tokyo 2020. They won't extend it. This is the same Olympics, they are just postponing it for a year. Though they should at least include the same number of suspended Tournaments up to BAC (Continental Championship) to the qualification, I think to be fair.

not likely. ...or the results from more testing, which will extend the global 'panic': https://www.ft.com/content/a888cf82-6c01-11ea-89df-41bea055720b to date only ~600 confirmed cases coming from a country of 1.3b is wishful thinking...
yeah, i share your concern on Indonesia. But if the spread is limited to a few countries 6 months later, then I think life will be back to normal. Much like how it was when China was initially the only country under attack by covid.
Sports News March 26, 2020 / 6:42 AM / Updated an hour ago IOC working toward July-August Olympics in 2021: Yomiuri https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...august-olympics-in-2021-yomiuri-idUSKBN21C3RE TOKYO (Reuters) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is working with sports bodies to arrange a July-August window for the postponed Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and hopes to confirm the schedule within a month, Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper reported on Thursday. John Coates, the IOC’s Coordination Commission chief for Tokyo, told the Yomiuri the Games would have to be held between the tennis Grand Slams of Wimbledon, slated to end in mid-July, and the U.S. Open, which starts in late August. “We want to more or less finalize the dates in four weeks’ time,” the paper quoted Coates as saying. Coates, who is also president of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), said the summer scheduling would be dependent on avoiding clashes with the world championships for swimming (July 16-Aug. 1) and athletics (Aug. 6-15). World Athletics boss Sebastian Coe has said the world athletics championships in Eugene, Oregon could be moved back to 2022 if necessary. Coates told the newspaper the hope was to follow the same arrangements next year that had been planned for 2020, including holding the marathon in the northern city of Sapporo instead of Tokyo to escape the heat. ====================================== The IOC and Japanese government succumbed to intense pressure from athletes and sporting bodies around the world on Tuesday, agreeing to push back the Games by as much as a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. IOC President Thomas Bach said on Wednesday that “all options” were on the table for rescheduling, including holding the Games before the Japanese summer. _________
aged 1 more year. This is especial worst for marin since she had power style and being the oldest among those top contenders. And also wc in her homeland will be affected
yeah, its kinda sucks I would prefer that world championship 2022 in Japan is erased and Huelva moved to 2022 but of course sponsorship things not gonna allow that.... world championship 2021 should not even be considered as world championship. I think the outcome of the tournament will be an odd one
By the summer of 2021, I think (or hope) the COVID-19 outbreak might have subsided. But the same cannot be said of the qualification period, assuming it is going to be May 2020 to April 2021.
March 27, 2020 / 6:52 PM / Updated 15 hours ago Already-qualified athletes will keep spots at 2021 Games in Tokyo https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-h...ep-spots-at-2021-games-in-tokyo-idUKKBN21E1OO ATHENS (Reuters) - All athletes who had qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will keep their spots for the Games next year following their postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic, the International Olympic Committee said on Friday. The IOC and Japanese organisers postponed the July 24-Aug 9 event earlier this week but confirmed that those among the 11,000 athletes set to compete in Tokyo who had already earned their spot would keep it. The IOC also said that the amount of spots allocated for each sport at the Games would remain the same next year. “The 57% that are qualified do remain in place and the goal is to maintain the same athletes quotas across the different sports,” an IOC official said. ================================================= *Badminton certainly has not decided yet who's already qualified officially since the qualification period mechanism is still vague, extended or keeping the original plan (29 April 2019-26 April 2020).
Sources: Tokyo Olympic organizers favor July 2021 https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200329_05/ The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics organizing committee will likely support the idea of delaying the Games to July of next year. The committee has been working to set new schedules and secure venues for the events since they were postponed last week due to the coronavirus pandemic. NHK sources say the option of opening the Olympics in July of next year is gaining support at the committee, considering the time needed to contain the virus, make preparations, and select athletes. The opening day would be July 23. It was originally scheduled for July 24 this year. The remainder of the schedule would accordingly move up one day. The Olympics would end on August 8. The Paralympics would be held from August 24 through September 5. The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, has suggested there are other options than holding the Games in the summer. Some international sports organizations have floated such ideas as holding the events in the spring, away from the summer heat. The Tokyo organizing committee hopes to reach a decision by the end of the week after consulting with the IOC and the Tokyo metropolitan government. ____________ *It's Spring or Summer? We'll find out the answer soon.
The Olympics need to be fair for all countries. Covid 19 is impossible to predict but safe to say not all countries have seen the worst of it. Whether it will pass by the other countries in time for them to recover is a trillion dollar question.
IOC President Thomas Bach underscores sacrifice and compromise for all 33 Olympic Sports for the impact of Tokyo 2020 new date. Olympic sport marquees, Athletics & Swimming are ready to reschedule their 2021 World Championships if Tokyo 2020 will be held on July-August 2021.
I Think it would be wiser to just treat it as a 2021 tournament. It’s too late to try and preserve this as a 2020 tournament, players will be aged differently, people will have different forms Especially for the very old or the very young players, and some special cases like Momota will have an entire year to recover and regain form, and all this will have already impacted the medal standings far too much. They might as well Amend the qualifications such that they can pick out the best players for the 2021 season, not 2020.
There is so many WC, just remove either Huelva or Tokyo. Hold it like swimming 2 years once or 4 years once better.
