Born in 2002, Christo Popov is one of the biggest promising players at the French, European and world scale. Last week, he became the youngest ever French champion, aged 17. Here’s a recap of what he has achieved so far. 2014 : U13 French champion (+ 2 titles in boys’ doubles and mixed doubles) 2015 : U13 French champion (+ 1 title in mixed doubles) 2016 : U15 French champion (+ 2 titles in boys’ doubles and mixed doubles) 2017 : First participation at the Nationals, aged 14 (defeated in last 16) First title on the Junior International Series circuit at the Yonex Italian Junior U15 French champion (+ 1 title in boys’s doubles) First participation at the World Junior Championships, aged 15 (defeated in last 8) Winner of the Danish Junior Cup, second title on the Junior circuit 2018 : 2nd participation at the Nationals (defeated in last 16) 3rd Junior title at the Hungarian Junior International U17 French champion (+ 2 titles in boys’ doubles and mixed doubles) First men’s doubles senior title with his brother Toma Jr Popov at the Bulgarian Open Championship (Int'l Series) Finalist of the European Junior Championships (defeated by Arnaud Merkle) 2019 : 3rd participation at the Nationals (defeated in last 8) 4th Junior title at the Hungarian International Junior Championships U19 French champion (+ 2 titles in boys’ doubles and mixed doubles) Silver medalist of the World Junior Championship (first ever medal for France) First international title on the senior circuit at the Italian International (Int'l Challenge), from qualifications 2020 : Youngest ever French champion at the age of 17
Dutch junior international U19 he won on March 1st. I predict that he will be among the top 20 before this year is over. Instead of Kunlavut and Lakshia I would like to make a poll in this thread, but I don't see the option. Also, is there the possibility to have the thread French badminton players?
Christo is WR 79 at the moment while Kunlavut is WR 28 and Lakshya WR 29, he has some serious catching up to do then.
Popov is promising. But at the World Junior Championship, it was pretty one sided against Kunlavut Vitindsarn so I'm not sure he could overtake him or Lakshia this year. Later on, those 3 players could totally develop differently but for now Popov still has a long way to go before getting in the top 20 imo.
On the short perspective, ranking mathematics favours Christo, but not Lakshia, for example. In six weeks Lakshia should reach two finals on low level tournaments to maintain his ranking points. Or have two wins at All England. Who knows mathematics, knows I can only tell roughly, please note.
I may misunderstand your question, because the information for the calculation is available freely. Anyway, for those who want to do maths for fun here is the link. Read the Overview and 2018-2021 system: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BWF_World_Ranking
I know the ranking system but I don't understand how it favors Popov over any other players to integrate the top 20 based on ranking mathematics. True Lakshia have points to defend but Popov have points to earn to catch up with him for example. If any of those players are to be in the top 20 they have to be proactive in earning big points. It's more about their future performances than the ranking mathematics aka past results. I believe Kunlavut Vitindsarn will be the first to explode on the pro tour and integrates the top 20. Taking into account the "HSBC race to Guangzhou" rankings shows better recent results and KV is #5. Doesn't mean much though but only that he scored big points recently.
This is a good example how it is important to read carefully what other people write. And try to see the point. In the near future Lakshia will lose thousands of points, but Christo will not. In the long run both will lose many thousands of old points before the year is over.
It's ok, I did understand. Yet I simply propose another side of the story if you prefer, by saying that short term points loss comparison won't help Popov integrates the top 20 before the 2 players you compared him too as I'd rather focus on points earned in the future to be able to be in the top 20 as none of those 3 players are in the top 20 on the first place. So points loss are somehow irrelevant. We weren't debating on who will be in front of who in the near future in the rankings but who will be top 20 first right? I didn't say you were not right about who will loose more points in the near future as I was only debating on who will intergate the top 20 first. You used this mathematic calculation to support the fact it will favour Popov to integrates the top 20 first (see posts number 2 and 5 of this thread) which I don't understand. Please explain to me if I failed to understand your point then ; in the near future, if Popov loose less points thanks to ranking mathematics, how does it favour him to integrates the top 20 before KV or Lakshia?
Omg..this will be a long day. One more time. 1. Mathematics tell that Lakshia will lose thousands of old points in the near future. 2. It is a fun prediction that Christo will enter top 20 before the year is over. Nothing to do with mathematics.
Ah it was a fun prediction and the ranking mathematic argument wasn't actually even related to the topic of the discussion? Ok then that was very random to talk about Lakshia points loss then if it has nothing to do with Popov entering the top 20 first. Long day indeed...
Year 2020 kept many players silent. Christo played only two individual tournament. But now he has been on the run again. On November he beat even Ginting. I suppose he will make a lot of progress on ranking chart this year.
Yes, one, two great wins and Alex will have a thread of his own. I suggest that "French players" sub thread should be created already.
Christo's ranking is improving slowly. He needs at least a few semifinals on big tournaments to reach top 20.
