Good to see Philippines have put up a strong performance over Singapore on their home ground. They deserved it as the organiser of this tournament. This regional encounter also exposed Singapore's weakness in not having enough talent to match the likes of LKY.

It looks like a very young team for Singapore, isn’t it?

Most of them have not been exposed to BWF international tournaments.

So experience in competing with players of other countries is lacking.

Philippines' men improve to 1-1 at Badminton Asia Team Championships
    https://tv5.espn.com/story/_/id/28683840/ph-women-squad-bows-badminton-asia

    12 Feb, 2020
    • Philip Matel
The Philippines' men's national badminton team scored a breakthrough 3-2 victory over Singapore on the second day of the 2020 Badminton Asia Manila Team Championships at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum Wednesday.

Solomon Padiz' Jr. clinched the tie for the hosts after getting by Darrion Michael Ng in the winner-take-all fifth match, 21-10, 21-19.

Loh Kean Yew drew first blood against Ros Pedrosa to take a 1-0 lead in the first match.

The tandem of Peter Magnaye and Alvin Morada managed to seize the Philippines' first match victory of the tourney, a 22-20, 21-19 decision over Andy Kwek and Loh.

Singapore then retook the lead in the tie, 2-1, after a close win by Jason Teh over Lanz Zafra, 21-14, 23-21.

Now staring at elimination, the duo of Joper Escueta and Paul Pantig rallied to gain a 21-16, 21-16 win against Abel Tan and Howin Wong to knot the tie at two matches apiece.

The Philippines ended their stint in Group C with a 1-1 record. Singapore dropped to 0-1.

A ticket to the quarterfinals this Friday could be clinched by the Philippines if Chinese Taipei beats Singapore in their face-off Thursday at 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Philippines' women's team was not as lucky as they bowed out of contention after a 5-0 loss to Indonesia.

Airah Albo started off the set on a positive note, taking a 21-19 victory over Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. However, Tunjung responded swiftly with a 21-11 win in the second set and blew the Filipina out, 21-9, in the clincher.

In the next match, the tandem of Alyssa Leonardo and Thea Pomar could not get the job done as they lost, 21-18, 21-12.

Bianca Carlos put up a fight before succumbing the tie against Ruselli Hartawan, 21-10, 21-18, to put the Philippines away for good.

Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti and Ribka Sugiarto, meanwhile, made quick work of Joella De Vera and Chanelle Lunod in the fourth match, 21-7, 21-8, in a faceoff that lasted for 23 minutes.

Sarah Barredo closed the Filipinas' stint in the continental meet with a 21-19, 21-14 loss against Putri Kusuma Wardani.

In other games, Malaysia blanked Kazakhstan in men's action, 5-0, while Indonesia and Korea in Group A are still fighting as of press time. Thailand came out victorious against Japan, 3-0, but have still not played their last two matches.

Badminton: Singapore Open in April to proceed; Asian stars Tai Tzu-ying, Ratchanok Intanon confirm attendance

SINGAPORE - For all her achievements, which include 147 weeks as world No. 1, an Asian Games gold and the 2018 All England title, Tai Tzu-ying knows her resume lacks the glint of silverware from the World Championships and Olympic Games.

No wonder the second-ranked Taiwanese is determined to end that barren run at this year's Summer Games in Japan. She will return to defend her Singapore Open crown and use the April 7-12 tournament as part of her preparation for her Olympic bid.

Tai, 25, said: "I want to win in Tokyo. I have been working hard and training relentlessly for it. Every tournament including Singapore Badminton Open needs to be looked at as a fresh challenge.

"I have to always give my 100 percent and not take any match lightly. For me, my fitness is very important and if I am fit and in a positive mind state, I can win any game."

She and compatriot Chou Tien-chen, the men's world No. 2, have confirmed their participation at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Chou captured the Singapore Open title in 2018.

Organised by the Singapore Badminton Association, the US$408,000 (S$566,181) Singapore Open is part of the BWF World Tour and is a Super 500 (Level 4) event. It is also the last stop in the qualifying window for this year's Olympics and as such, is seen as a key event for the top shuttlers to challenge for points and a ticket to Tokyo 2020.

Reigning women's champion Carolina Marin of Spain and former world champion Thai Ratchanok Intanon will feature in the Republic while Rio 2016 men's singles gold medallist Chen Long headlines a list of 42 Chinese players, including women's world No. 1 Chen Yufeim, bound for Singapore.

While the coronavirus outbreak has led to numerous high profile sporting events in Singapore being postponed or cancelled - the Feb 27-Mar 1 HSBC Women's World Championship golf tournament has been dropped - Singapore Open organisers remain optimistic.

Organising chairman Robert Lim said: "It is our full intention to stage the Singapore Badminton Open in April and preparations for it are on track. The health and well-being of our players, spectators and event personnel remain our absolute priority.
