YOUNG GUNS STUN WORLD CHAMPS – THAILAND OPEN: FINALS SUNDAY, AUGUST 4, 2019 TEXT BY GEETHANJALI LAKSHMAYYA | BADMINTONPHOTO India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament when they gave world No. 2 China’s Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen their marching orders in the men’s doubles at the TOYOTA Thailand Open 2019. In their first Super 500 final, Shetty and Rankireddy – ranked No. 16 in the world – needed a little over an hour to outclass the 2018 world champions from China 21-19 18-21 21-18. Despite a slow start to the year for the Indian pair, with Rankireddy taking the first few months to heal from a chest bone injury, the Indian pair were on top of their game. There seemed to be no evidence of a weak arm as Rankireddy kept up a relentless array of smashes that had the Chinese scrambling. Rankireddy said: “I was not playing like usual but I kept telling myself that it’s just one more match, one more match. I was so calm and whenever I got a chance, I wanted to finish the shot. I could see that they didn’t want to lift the shuttle for me.” Li and Liu fell to Rankireddy and Shetty. Recovering from his initial surprise and speechlessness after the win, Shetty said: “I can’t believe that we’ve just beaten the current world champs. They are really good attacking players so our plan was to keep the shuttle low. “We varied our shots. We played a few flat shots but then they rushed to the net so we decided that Satwik would play a few hard smashes and I would play some soft shots down to the net. Their defence is usually very good too but I think at their height, it looked like they were struggling to come forward low at the net.” Liu had only praise for his opponents: “They were more than we expected. They were calm and in control. In stressed situations, they managed to pull through. They are a big potential threat for a long time.” This mantra of remaining calm and confident has taken Rankireddy/Shetty through the last few days but their success may not have been possible without a change in their training since coming under the tutelage of coach Flandy Limpele of Indonesia. “Before Coach Flandy, we were doing a lot of on-court training but he put us through a lot of physical training and running. That’s why even though we’ve had a long week, we’re not tired today,” said Shetty.
Woww, surprised to see Hindi newspaper also covering their win. Do you know that if Hindi and English news channels have covered their win or not ?
Sunday evening news channels: Times Now, Ndtv, India Today to name a few. Winners always grab the limelight. This is good for the future of Indian doubles.
India's medal chances at WC are in WS. Saina Nehwal has to pass Chen Yufei and PV Sindhu has Tai Tzu Ying in the quarters. Indian MS haven't shown any promise of a medal on current form. In doubles only MD Satwik Rankireddy/ Chirag Shetty have an outside chance of a semifinal finish. My main concern is Satwik's shoulder, he has little recovery time and hoping he can last the tournament. Satwik should pull out of XD and just play MD. Even when you have top fitness levels its tough to play 2 events.
I was more worried when I saw his name featuring in the draw of Hyderabad open this week in both men's and mixed doubles. Thankfully he has withdrawn. Will help him recover physically specially his shoulder.

Injuries to Satwik/Chirag and Pranaav have ruled out the following pairs 1.Satwik Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty 2.Satwik/ Ashwini Ponappa 3.Pranaav Jerry Chopra/Sikki Reddy Since it's an Olympic year they have decided not to risk aggravating injuries. Hope they recover quickly and continue to impress in tournaments. We will have to wait till 2021 for a doubles WC medal and hope they get an Olympic medal in 2020.
Omg. What?. They withdrew? Unfortunate. This will happen when you overly dependent on a certain pair due to the lacking of multiple pairs.

Steen brought this up during PVS’s match commentary today. He went on to mention Gopichand was animated when some of those umpiring calls when against SN It would be interesting to see footage of that exists Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
wow! pvs over tty. the factors i noticed: improvement in racket skills and shot variety is paying off! the noticeable additional muscles in her legs are adding to her speed and power. good coaching of the mind and skills combined with natural talent and will power goes a long way. i have always especially loved the attitude kim ji-hyun imparts towards her players. sindhu looked self-confident even after losing game 1. i believe this is sindhu's break out tournament, whether she wins this wc or not.
just glanced at the ws draw... i'm picking pvs over okuhara in the final if she does not get drawn into a track meet w/ her. okuhara has been playing incredibly fast this tournament, running circles around her opponents, and has not hesitated to attack when needed.
LOL, this must be the first time salty top-10 player complains in social media after losing important match.
