Yeah, but who is gonna make the effort and DIY Airbadminton? Haha

I figure they will sell kits, but the kits will either have to be multipurpose, with the stakes for grass, the weird boards for sand and the tape for asphalt, or they will sell one kit of each surface type. Either way it's gonna be a whole lotta waste as I assume most people won't be lugging their massive amounts of equipment needed (and a huge net) just to play this at the park, beach or graffiti-filled streets.

This concept doesnt seem very well thought out at all. Not very practical imo. In Singapore, we already have plenty of open to public open air courts with built in net posts. The only positive is the so called wind resistant shuttle, which is not available yet. Seems pretty half baked. I dont see how this is gonna help make badminton more 'mainstream' in the western countries.

    So much negativity around here...

I for one think a wind resistant shuttle would have been most welcome in my younger years when I started playing outdoors in the backyard and the outdoor courts at my primary school. Indoor courts are hard to come by for us then.

And I'm quite sure this newly developed shuttle would be most welcome by those who now have no choice but to play outdoors eg. kids in poorer communities in India, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, SE Asia, etc. Good for BWF to make badminton accessible to everyone, whether indoors or outdoors.

    Totally agree... but...
I think this sums it up if you can play it on a regular badminton court (you can, I mean you don't always have to play by the official rules, they're subject to change anyway, especially when something is new.

I still fear the shuttle will not work too well...
    ... that's not a lot ):

If it works, there's no need to really buy a court, on the beach, you have sand to draw lines, you can set up the important corners with cones and estimate the lines, you don't always need hawk eye when playing with friends for fun. The net still is a problem, even if the shuttle is better than expected.

    The question still is:
Why the f......un shuttle is not available when announcing this.

Be interested to see how heavy this shuttle is. I imagine using a cheap racket with low tension would be a wise move.

i see nothing about this shuttle that is wind resistance.

the 2 ways to make something wind resistance:

    1. smaller surface area
    2. heavier. much heavier.

that Airshuttle is none of the above.

The large holes and the fact that the skirt is mostly flat would reduce surface area. At least coming from the right or left of the shuttle's direction. But their claim is only 12km/h so they don't have much faith in it either.

I'm guessing it's resistant to wind perpendicular to the shuttle trajectory thanks to the large holes in the skirt.

    100% my thoughts.

    I kinda disagree.
I expect the tip of the shuttle to be really heavy because it's the best chance to make it wind resistant. To compensate for the speed added by the weight, the skirt must have an angle of almost 90 degree to slow it down.
The weight distribution and the cut outs in the skirt should make the shuttle more resistant to side winds.

Edit: if the skirt produces some kind of spin (like a bullet) it could be more wind resistant as well.

After all the shuttle itself could make outdoor badminton more convenient to play. I mean in a way we're you leave out any rules, lines and the net because no one will carry all that stuff to the park or beach.

I know we all hate it when we say that we play badminton and people are like "I played it before in my backyard, it's hardly a real sport".
This kind of ignorance and unawareness sucks but getting more people to play casual outdoor badminton is not a bad thing in my opinion.
I would have never started playing real badminton if I did not play "featherball" before (as a kid, in the backyard, together with my grandma).

Getting more people to play like this can ultimately raise the attention of the sport and make more people play the actual game.

So is it bad to get more people to play casual featherball instead of casual pingpong or something? No.
Should it be a priority of the bwf to do this? Probably Not.
Is Airbadminton going to do this? I doubt it.

I don't care if it took them 5 years to invent that shuttle if it is good.
But promoting a sport after all the time and not having the most important equipment ready to sell? It's a total joke.

As much as I want to like this idea I don't think anyone will care about this new game. Please prove me wrong bwf.

More information regarding the AirShuttle: https://bwfbadminton.com/news-single/2019/05/15/insights-into-the-new-airshuttle/

It seems a bit long to develop but we can’t expect people to create something new and plausible within 12 months. 30 prototypes have been tested in 3 years and the final design is actually being finalized by badminton brands and manufacturers before the BWF decide on their favourite one.

The design still suggest more air resistance and a heavier shuttle. Also we can’t expect the AirShuttle to be playable in case of strong winds but more likely to be playable in case of a light breeze.

The design is quite interesting, the design of the skirts sugguests, that the AirShuttle will actually start to rotate more comparable to feather shuttlecocks, whereas the more symetrically design of standard plastic shuttles are lacking this feature.

I would be very happy to have an additonal option to play more often and outdoor. Eventually it will be a completly different game flow,I would compare it to beachvolleyball.

Beachvolleyball is an outdoor sport, it is fun and differs from standard volleyball not only in rules, but although in the game flow. Still it is competitve and olympic discipline.

So, why shouldn't traditional badminton and AirBadminton not coexist too ?

Lines on hard surface like cement or asphalt, draw them with chalk. For the beach, draw them in the sand with a stick, fix as needed. For grass, use a water soluble spray paint. Court dimensions and rules should be the same as regular badminton, the same way most people play who don't have access to indoor courts. The shuttle may be interesting, the rest of the concept, not so much.

All very interesting views and feedback here. I do wonder if BWF wants to promote this in a way to supplement and promote the existing form of Badminton this variant should have more similarities than differences but that's not the case here. Different rules, size of court, scoring, the exclusion of drop/net shots....
As someone else already mentioned in the thread, back in the day kids back in the day would have played outdoors and just made do...and some of them went on to be champions, people like Wong Peng Soon, the Choong brothers, etc.

I've read most opinions and think there is LACK OF VISION from who proposes to the public a shuttlecock like the air shuttle.
As you know some hundreds of years ago it was obvious badminton could not be played outdoors due to wind. So making the shuttle and racket studier, Tennis was invented and due to LACK OF VISION, badminton was relegated to halls.
As the BWF explains badminton will evolve outdoors with the Air shuttle!!!!
I think with the new rules and air shuttle have improved only 10-15% but if the sport is to be played globally in any form outdoors, you need to change the sport radically without changing the basics.

VISION is badminton is played outdoors and organised in beach resorts, camping sites, sports centres etc.
VISION is badminton is played outdoors at schools without halls, tournaments organised whether official/social,
VISION is badminton is played outdoors but a court, rackets, shuttles, lines are portable in a bag.

OK, you think you already have this but just think on the economical, practical and technical aspect.

Economical: how long will resorts, camping sites, sports centres afford to replace broken rackets. Schools, where rackets break more are certain to think twice in spending whether on new rackets than a soft ball?
If you have vision, a non breakable racket should be proposed.

Practical: I saw the rules. OK, make mini courts so wind is limited to a smaller area. If you have VISION and understand wind problems, the net height should be lowered...it's all about angles and lowering the game where wind interference is decreased.
Also make it easy. If it's a mini court, serve with one foot on base line. Elimated complicated and unpracticle service lines!!!!

Technical: having studied outdoor play with tournaments, technically speaking the main problem is WIND VARIANCE!!!!
You find most important suppliers selling you an indoor shuttlecock as ok for outdoor!!! These are tubes of 1 speed normally weighing 5.2g +/- 5% which are ok for standard courts of 13m length and NO WIND!!!

So if you have mini courts and wind variance, do you call a YY Mavis or Air shuttle OUTDOOR SHUTTLES?????
The answer is NO, NO, NO.

Technically, you need a shuttle which travels less length without wind but at the same time a shuttle that can withstand wind variances during playing a game and at the same time is sufficiently stable.

This is VISION. A radical way to improve to play outdoors. If you don't think radical, you will not go far.

The Economical, Practical and Technical radical improvements are not science fiction. In fact a badminton federation is using all these improvements in schools and outdoors since 2018!!!!

The main improvements is the shuttlecock which has a new mould but still looks like a standard shuttlecock. A single tube contains multifunctional shuttles having first a weight of 5g which travels only 8m. This and other shuttles in the tube can be modified on the spot to 7 different speeds. During play is wind variance increase/decreases just change your shuttle weight and resume play.

This is VISION and how to adapt to the main problematic cause of playing badminton outdoors: WIND VARIANCE!!!

This shuttle is commercialised on AMAZON as a multipurpose shuttlecock.

We must never forget, badminton is not a perfect outdoor sport and has big limitations unless there is NO WIND

sounds like something designed by a committee and the marketing department instead of someone grounded to the reality of physics.
