SINGAPORE - With top-ranked men's doubles pair Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo confirming their participation in the Singapore Badminton Open, the April 9-14 tournament will see the world No. 1 players of all five events competing at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Organisers announced on Wednesday (Feb 27) that the pair, the Asian Games champions, are part of a 50-strong contingent from Indonesia who will be in town. The contingent includes men's singles world No. 7 Anthony Ginting and No. 9 Jonatan Christie, also an Asian Games champion.

Viktor Axelsen, the men's singles world No. 6, will also compete at the tournament.

The other top-ranked players are Kento Momota of Japan (men's singles), Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei (women's singles), Japanese pair Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota (women's doubles) and Chinese duo Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong (mixed doubles).

The Singapore Open's star-studded field will also feature China's top male shuttlers Lin Dan and Chen Long.

Singapore's representatives include Yeo Jia Min in the women's singles and Loh Kean Yew in the men's singles.

Loh, who upset two-time Olympic champion Lin to win the Thailand Masters in January, said: "As a player and fan of the sport, I'm excited that so many big names are going to be competing at the Singapore Open. This is going to be a huge test for myself and I hope to capitalise on the home support to push me to achieve great results and do Singapore proud."

This year’s Singapore Badminton Open is set to feature world No. 1s in all five events – the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and the mixed doubles.

Organisers announced on Wednesday (27 February) that, when registration closed on Tuesday, the latest entries for the 9-14 April tournament at the Singapore Indoor Stadium included the top-ranked men’s doubles pair, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia.

The duo are the reigning Asian Games champions and are part of a 50-strong Indonesian contingent which includes men’s singles world No. 7 Anthony Ginting and No. 9 Jonatan Christie, also an Asian Games champion.

Danish contingent to feature top men’s singles players
Denmark also submitted its registration on deadline day, and will see men’s singles world No. 6 Viktor Axelsen, former European champion Jan O Jorgensen and up-and-coming star Anders Antonsen taking part.

Antonsen recently stunned men’s singles world No. 1 Kento Momota of Japan to win January’s Indonesia Masters.

Momota is also part of what is shaping up to be a strong men’s singles field, which will also feature two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan, 2016 Olympic gold medallist Chen Long and Taiwan’s defending champion Chou Tien-chen.

Nine of the current top 10 men’s singles shuttlers will be participating at the Open.

Besides Gideon/Sukamuljo and Momota, the other world No. 1s taking part are Taiwan’s Tai Tzu-ying (women’s singles), Japan’s Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota (women’s doubles) and China’s Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong (mixed doubles).

Loh Kean Yew, Yeo Jia Min to fly Singapore colours
Singapore will also have its top shuttlers Loh Kean Yew (men’s singles) and Yeo Jia Min (women’s singles) at the Open. Both were winners in the Singapore National Open Championships earlier this month, while Loh stunned Lin to clinch the Thailand Masters in January.

Said Loh, “As a player and a fan of the sport, I’m excited that so many big names are going to be competing at the Singapore Open. This is going to be a huge test for myself and I hope to capitalise on the home support to push me to achieve great results and do Singapore proud.”

Early-bird ticket sales end on 28 February.Tickets for the Open are available via Sports Hub Tix and APAC Tix. Early-bird ticket sales end on 28 February.

After looking at M&Q list, I find it strange that SGP doesn't give their own players a WC. The WS and XD already have their own player in the main draw. But, the rest are still in the reserve list, particularly LKY from MS category.

The draw is pretty decent - but previous Singapore Opens were hit by last minute withdrawals. I hope that won't happen again this year - would be a waste of a season ticket if it were so.

That was because Singapore Open was just right after Malaysia Open, Indonesia Open and Thailand Open. All in 4 weeks.
I don't think there would be many withdrawals this year as many players skipped India Open for Singapore Open instead.

MS - Chou Tien Chen (TPE)
    WS - Sayaka Takahashi (JPN)
MD - Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan (INA)
WD - Ayako Sakuramoto/Yukiko Takahata (JPN)
XD - Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai (MAS)

SGP Open 2019 offers much better and strong line-up than last year edition due to Asian Games that squeezed four tournaments in four straight weeks. Only Shi Yuqi and Son Wan Ho of current men's singles top ten miss Super 500 HSBC-BWF World tour in this city state. Top-seed Kento Momota who made shocking exit last week is encircled by Indian players here, Sai Praneeth and has possible scenario to meet Prannoy and Srikanth Kidambi in next two rounds. Badminton fans will be treated to follow a mouth watering showdown which will pit Viktor Axelsen against the comeback Super Dan in opening round, another China-Denmark tie also will see Chen Long versus the fast improved Anders Antonsen.

Women's singles defending champion Sayaka Takahashi will find difficult test to clear first hurdle, 2012 Olympic Champion Li Xuerui. A tricky opponent will await Taiwanese ace Tai Tzu Ying very early, US player Zhang Beiwen. Other notable participants, 2016 champion Ratchanok Intanon, Pusarla V. Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, two Japanese leading ladies and Sung Ji Hyun fill the star-studded landscape. While Japan brings their A-team in women's, China only represented by their second-stringers.

A possible MAS Open rematch for Gideon/Sukamuljo against Alfian/Ardianto in same stage here, quarterfinal if the scenario is going smoothly. It would be huge upset if Japan WD failed to secure the title after series of setbacks lately including just concluding Super 750 tournament in Kuala Lumpur. The unstoppable duo Zheng/Huang will get tricky challengers in last sixteen Jordan/Oktavianti who almost dashed their All England dream last month.
