I thought TTY deserves it more. WS is the most competitive and just winning halfdozens of it.., deserve being a rolemodel.
My guess is one of Zheng/Huang will take this, and just one of them. Huang wins the title so that Zheng is eliminated, in this case, Marcus/Kevin is more points than Momota. One more reason is Mayu/Naga take "the most improved players" so that Momota was eliminated. In my opinion Huang is very lucky in this situation ^-^, Tai/FukuHiro is more worthy
How can the BWF reasonably only give one half of a pair an award? I mean, there are only two players in pair, and collaboration is an essential component of the game. Has this ever happened before? And, ... no awards to any singles players. Considering the nature of the game, I wonder whether it wouldn't be better to do away with gender differentiation altogether, and just go for the Best Singles Player and Best Doubles, instead.
Why not? Esp in XD! (Controversial as it may sound but wouldn't you pick HYQ as the "better half of the pair"? I know I would) But that's not the point. HYQ won cause they thought she was the best in the women's section however Minions were too strong for ZSW in Mens section. Their win-loss ratio one of the significant factor. Also, BWF might have found it "difficult to award" Fukushima/Hiro cause A) ofcourse it'll highlight the flaw in their system (they'll also be unavailable to pick their prize) and/or B) they thought the Japanese WD were all so strong and all so close, that it'll be unjust to rank one above the other. C) when one discipline is completely dominated by one nation, it's often the "odd one" who grabs the attention. Having said that, I am not taking anything away from HYQ, I believe she absolutely deserves it, OFC I am a lil biased towards my fav front court player atm
I agree even though I kinda hope TTY to take this one, but I can accept that HYQ wins it I would certainly not give it to FukuHiro since they did not win as much as the other candidates from the very beginning
I can see what you mean. At the same time, while there is always a "better half", it is the chemistry between both players that leads to results. Personally, as is mentioned in my edited message above, I am not convinced that the gender differentiation in the awards is necessary. Considering the differing nature of singles and doubles, I would go for a Best Singles and Best Doubles Award that cuts across both genders, and would include XD as a pair. But I suppose that would make predictions too easy.
I agree HYQ as the better half of pair. But better than TTY in women's section? It's hard to agree. Especially with the level of Women's single this year. HYQ wouldn't have been dominating without her partner per se. And it's not as if she had any great results in WD either.
As you said ^-^ 2008: Zhou Mi 2009: Wang Yihan 2010: Wang Xin 2011: Wang Xiaoli/Yu Yang 2012: Wang Yihan 2013: Li Xuerui 2014: Zhao Yunlei 2015: Carolina Marin 2016: Misaki/Ayaka 2017: Chen Qingchen 2018: Huang Yaqiong
So you mean if a woman playing doubles wants to be crowned the Woman player of the year has to be successful in both XD and WD? Why? XD not competitive enough alone? Is WD+XD = WS, or XD<<WS? Are you implying badminton to go tennis' way and give little to no importance to doubles? Yes I can understand where you are coming from TTY was very dominant, and won a lot of tourneys. And I wouldn't be surprised and/or disheartened if she won the award. I am just saying HYQ is fairly deserving and se was my pick and am just gapph she won. In hindsight it's victory for XD which imo is the least appreciated discipline. And nobody's first preference, often chosen just to do double duty
some better awards: (year but count from ssf2017 til before wtf2018) fair play of the year: http://sticksmash.com/2017/12/15/viktor-axelsen-shows-best-act-sportsmanship-court-today-video/ most one sided match of the year (because the one who win too dominated): marin vs saina (wc) most one sided match of the year (because the one who lose too "let it go"): marcus kevin vs li liu (japan open) comeback of the year/history is made of the year: marin got third wc title streak of the year: tai with 31 wins (this one become history too) most disappointing match of the year: viktor vs momota (thomas cup). Ppl talk abt it for year, happen one sided like before match of the year: ginting vs momota (china open the first ) hardest title to get of the year: ginting beat 4 major champs (with total 3 OG, 9 wc) to win china open the first best tourney of the year: china open the first (winner from 5 different countries) worst referee decisions of the year fansign of the year serve of the year: can't save match point, but nice try of the year fail celebration of the year epic celebration of the year sexiest moment/save of the year reaction time of the year (actually i only see this one with reaction time) lucky shot of the year slip smash of the year smash of the year wtf moment of the year doube wtf moment of the year super skill of the year game point of the year match point of the year play of the year just a gif
Yeah that'll be apt However than it'll loose it's prestige quite a lot. 5 disciplines and 4 awards. (XD players will still be under appreciated) Also, Singles will get more and more attention, and badminton will go on the path of tennis. Singles will then eventually have separate year end finale etc And so forth. I am myself biased a lil towards singles esp WS (India never enjoyed much success in Doubles) but then badminton will loose it's identity and move towards a "capital oriented individual sport" and will loose its "representing the nation feel".
Don't forget we're in China homesoil, so take that into account with the player awards. So definitely HYQ over TTY, because also the politics with Taiwan. Sent from my SM-G965W using Tapatalk
Nope, just simply think that her individual performance in XD alone wasn't enough to put her above this year's TTY's. If she had another great performance in WD, then yes she might have overtaken TTY convincingly. If this is a way to say that Zheng/Huang > TTY then I supposed it is.
I meant to say that gender differentiation ISN'T necessary. Therefore, we would only have three prizes: Best Singles Player Best Doubles and, Most Improved Player. This wouldn't necessarily result in less prestige. I understand what you mean about the danger of singles and doubles being separated, but I also feel that badminton needs a little more commercialisation. How this can be achieved whilst maintaining the current national, clubby feel, I am not sure, though.
Statistics for WD pairs. FYI, Yuki/Sayaka's win loss percentage is higher than any of these qualified pairs. Their win loss record is 40-8 (83.33%)
