After two high intensity tournaments in Tokyo and Changzhou, BWF World Tour will cool down in Seoul that stage Super 500 event. 2018 Korea Open entry list is much better than last year which lack of top names attendance. Li Xuerui and home doubles specialist super star Lee Yong Dae are among of participants that will draw attention for badminton fans.

Five of current top-10 MS players skip this tournament with various reasons, Shi Yuqi, Lee Chong Wei, Chen Long, Kidambi Srikanth and Angus Ng Ka Long. World number one Viktor Axelsen, reigning world champion Kento Momota, the legendary Lin Dan, AG silver medalist Chou Tien Chen, home favourite Son Wan Ho and defending champion Anthony Sinisuka Ginting who created spectacular run in just concluded CHN Open Super 1000 are the main ingredients for men’s singles title contention. Axelsen who’s unwell condition last week will take on Hsu Jen Hao in opening round while second seed Momota has Malaysian independent shuttler, Chong Wei Feng. Tougher draw on bottom-half that looking forward for possible Momota-Lin and Ginting-Chou TC rematch in last eight stage.

Taiwanese ace Tai Tzu Ying, the in-form Carolina Marin, defending champion Pusarla V.Sindhu opt to stay at home to prepare next month Europe tour in Denmark & French Open. Some of the elite players show up here to eye WS top podium and earn 9,200 ranking point for the winner. Akane Yamaguchi, Ratchanok Intanon, Nozomi Okuhara, Sung Ji Hyun, Saina Nehwal with their leverage make WS competition still interesting to notice. China will be represented by back-up squad plus 2012 Olympic Champion Li Xuerui as two leading players Chen Yufei and He Bingjiao are excluded in their roster.

Men’s doubles top quarters will offer interesting early round clash, Lee Yong Dae with his new partner Kim Gi Jung will try to reclaim their honor at home soil as Korea is bulding up their new generation towards Tokyo 2020. Lee/Kim have former All England champion Ivanov/Sozonov to overcome then top-seed Kamura/Sonoda will up against CHN Open runner-up Han CK/Zhou HD. Indonesia rests all of their A-listers after competed back to back Super 750 & 1000 tournaments.

Japan sends main arsenal to rule women’s doubles discipline, practically no major threat can stem their continuous victory, only few pairs that may trouble them, China's Du Y/Li YH and Tang JH/Yu XH also some unheralded local hopefuls. Fukushima/Hirota, Matsutomo/Takahashi and Matsumoto/Nagahara will be the pair to beat, thanks to consistency, persistence and resilience to frustrate their opponents.

Zheng SW/Huang YQ in hat-trick mission, playing non stop tournaments since World Championships, their ranking point had reached 100,000 and still hungry for more. The world number one should be wary for possible quarterfinal foe, Thai duo Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai who almost eliminated them in Changzhou. With the absence of world number two Wang YL/Huang DP, it’s time for others to book final ticket from lower-half of draw, Christiansen/Pedersen, Watanabe/Higashino, The Adcocks are potential candidates to make it happen.

Momota need to take time to become fully fit....but i dont blame him playing every tounament after not being allowed to do so during his ban.I still think malaysia should have have offered him citizenship to take on the mantle of Datuk during his ban.

If Ginting won this tournament, it would be back to back wins two years in a row.

A projection of Ginting's opponents from the first round to the final :

    R1: Lucas Corvee
    R2: Wang Tzu Wei
    QF: Chou Tien Chen [4]
    SF: Kento Momota [2]
    F: Viktor Axelsen [1]

Well, it won't be an easy task.. Hope he gets a game and can perform as well as he has done for CHN Open in last week. ;)

The world number one pair concede to retire, possibly fatigue and avoid injury risk.

Indeed, that's BWF ridiculous regulation to force top-ranked shuttlers playing so many tournaments in one year calendar.

Lukai got the short end of the straw. Zsw was given huang yaqiong, cqc with Jia yifan, and he is left with a nobody.
Ruthless from China team. Lukai / huang was world number 2/3 when they were split?

2017 Sudirman Cup painful losing when Lu/Huang lost mentally to Choi/Chae forced CBA to split Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong and Huang paired up with Zheng SW to find lethal combination.

In the retirement of Zheng/Huang at opening round makes XD crown is wide open for other seeded pairs. Thai duo Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai have slow start against home scratch pair Choi SG/Shin SC then All England Champion also drop opening game before coming back to their rhythm, beat Lamsfuss/Herttrich.

The new regulation of BWF to force the top ranked to participate in many tournaments are really ruining all the fun.

Gill's claim of "Nowadays badminton is healthy" or whatever sounds like a sarcasm to me. Seeing how most players participating are unfit, injured and exhausted mentally and physically but had to battle it off like they don't need rest and get humiliated.
