China will host one of badminton “grand slam” event for third time after Beijing (1987) and Guangzhou (2013). This year Nanjing, a historical and ancient city in East China region is awarded to stage seven-day world class action.

The 24th BWF World Championships portrays the most challenging and difficult times for badminton powerhouse China to extend their glorious feat in all five categories since initial participation in 1983 following unimpressive, flop display and the latest setback occured in South East Asia BWF World Tour.

On contrary, Japan badminton profile has risen sharply yet indicates positive trend that demonstrated by fruitfullness of their players in top-tier tournaments recently. The Rising Sun land has best opportunity to end title drought since won the only World Championships gold medal through WD pair Etsuko Toganoo/Emiko Ueno at inaugural showcase, Malmo 1977.

    MEN’S SINGLES
    • Interesting fact records only three nations that carve successful story to grab prestigious World Champion crown in this category, China (13 times), Indonesia (6) and Denmark (3). Maybe the time will be arrived for other nations to taste the glory.
    • The limping bottom-half of draw will see the awakening of Kento Momota and rejuvenated Kidambi Srikanth as the favourites to cross sword in semifinal post Lee Chong Wei shocking withdrawal due to respiratory illness also last year bronze medalist Son Wan Ho as well who cancelled his trip caused by leg injury.
    • Momota is back to his best and spread the scariest threat to tackle top names like Viktor Axelsen, Lee Chong Wei, Chen Long more than once recently. Srikanth is battling injury after scored dazzling performance last season and trying to make amends in capital city of Jiangsu Province.
    • Apart of those leading figures, home representatives will rely on living-legend Lin Dan, the Olympic Champion Chen Long and All England champion Shi Yuqi. But the trio have no eye-catching feat instead of unconvincing fashion lately, only emerged as Thomas Cup winner last May. Much awaited clash will see title-holder Axelsen and Chen Long facing off in last eight.
    • Some names who may spring upset to steal the show, Chou Tien Chen, Prannoy, Ng Ka Long and Indonesian darkhorses Ginting-Christie-Sugiarto.

The Olympic Champion Matsutomo/Takahashi, last year beaten finalist Fukushima/Hirota, Dubai Finals winner Tanaka/Yonemoto and the rising stars Matsumoto/Nagahara are ready to carry Japan campaign in Nanjing.
    • World Champion Chen/Jia look vurnerable, ordinary, lack of fighting spirit and far from their excellent form so far, an uphill task to halt Japan domination despite they're still world number one pair. What about Okuhara Nozomi last year? Or are you only referring to the WD category?

Nothing could delight me more than LD creating a few upsets in this WC no matter who wins the title.
And another Marcus/Kevin vs Liu/Zhang final when both pairs are in form.

Will there be any live streams for R64 at Badminton tv? Or they will start the coverage from R32

Yes, Chen Long has just said he's gunning for the Asian Games MS gold, the only major title missing in his resume. But that doesn't mean he'll go easy on the World Champs on home soil.

The only question is whether he can regain his scintillating form of yesteryear in time for the two big ones as he has been drifting aimlessly the last two years. To be frank, it's hard to be optimistic, even for his loyal fans.

However, in the previous Olympic year,he was also more or less in questionable form till he reached Rio where he virtually announced, 'Veni, Vidi, Vici !'

Would it be the same this time, who dares to rule him out ? We'll see. The answer will be known very soon.

    Damn right...
Hope people call out momota's psychological weakness(just coming out of a ban).Really miss li yong bo who would take a swipe at the opposition in press conferences and during matches .Hope Lin Dan takes the lead and say in press conference 'Chinese contingent will make momota their bunny from now on' or something to that effect.

I think it’s a pretty realistic goal no? Aiming high doesn’t always equal to arrogance in sports. It just shows some ambition that can motivates the athletes. And let’s face it Japan has a potential winner in every category.

I'm afraid we've to admit Momota is the clear favourite, even more so after the unforeseen withdrawal of his number one threat LCW and the lesser but solid possible threat Son Wan Ho.

I also believe Momota has gotten out of the adverse effects of the one-year ban and he's riding high now with outstanding results to show for. Mentally he's not weak at all , on the contrary, I believe he's steady, stable, even strong under pressure as he's demonstrated in past team event appearance(s).

As I've said, he's expected to sail into the final and then I doubt there's anyone on the opposite half to stop him either. Technically, skills-wise I believe Lin Dan can deal with him which is why I had originally hoped they get to meet in the earlier rounds, by the QFs latest when Lin Dan's fitness/stamina is not that stretched as it'd be in the final when accumulated fatigue would most certainly take its toll on the 35-year-old, a considerable disadvantage as shown in his previous two big title bouts, the Glasgow WC '17 and the AE '18 finals, on both occasions to much younger athletes more than 10 years his junior.

And no point repeating myself in different words. Let all the contenders' racquets do the talking. Tomorrow is D-Day.

OTOH, who knows we might be in for a surprise. Life is seldom that predictable. To use that cliche, always expect the unexpected.

Only two, that modest ? Psychologically speaking, yeah, better not overestimate oneself, set too high a goal and put unnecessary pressure on your charges.
