    Chen’s Long Shot to Dubai
Olympic champion Chen Long’s late-season form has helped him clinch a spot at the Dubai World Superseries Finals 2017, the year-end finale for the eight top-ranked players and pairs on the MetLife BWF World Superseries.

The Chinese Men’s Singles star was languishing at No.20 in the Destination Dubai Rankings in early November following a run of below-par results by his standards. Chen finally turned it around on home turf at the Tahoe China Open, clinching the title and vaulting 11 places to No.9.

He followed that up with another strong showing at the Yonex-Sunrise Hong Kong Open, finishing runner-up to Lee Chong Wei. His Hong Kong Open performance elevated him to No.7, ensuring his qualification as the second-ranked Chinese player below Shi Yuqi, who qualified in third.

Other Men’s Singles players to qualify are Korea’s Son Wan Ho, India’s Kidambi Srikanth, Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei, Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen, Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long and World champion Viktor Axelsen (Denmark), who will be defending his Dubai title.

Women’s Singles World champion Nozomi Okuhara, in ninth place on the Destination Dubai Rankings, will receive a wild card as she is World champion; China’s Chen Yufei, in eighth spot, will thus miss out if Okuhara – who has recently been sidelined by a knee injury – confirms her participation.

Okuhara’s Japanese compatriot Akane Yamaguchi tallied the highest number of points in the Superseries this year and qualifies in top spot, while defending champion Tai Tzu Ying (Chinese Taipei), winner of five Superseries this season, qualifies in second place.

Two-time Dubai runner-up Sung Ji Hyun (Korea), Pusarla V Sindhu (India), Ratchanok Intanon (Thailand), Carolina Marin (Spain) and He Bingjiao (China) have also made the cut.

Indonesia’s Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo have been in irresistible form this season with six Superseries titles, making them the top qualifiers in Men’s Doubles.

The second spot, nearly 18,000 points behind, is occupied by Denmark’s Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen, followed by two Chinese pairs – Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen, and World champions Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan. Another Danish pair – Mads Conrad-Petersen/Mads Pieler Kolding – have qualified in sixth.

Japan’s Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda will be joined by younger compatriots Yugo Kobayashi/Takuro Hoki. The latter will make their Dubai debut as will Chinese Taipei’s Lee Jhe-Huei/Lee Yang who qualified in seventh.

The big names to miss out in Women’s Doubles are Olympic champions Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi. The Japanese duo, winners of the Dubai event in 2014 and runners-up last year, are third in the Destination Dubai Rankings but cannot qualify since each member association can field a maximum of two players or pairs in a category. As Japan’s Shiho Tanaka/Koharu Yonemoto and Yuki Fukushima/Sayaka Hirota are at No.1 and No.2, Matsutomo/Takahashi and No.7 Naoko Fukuman/Kurumi Yonao will not be in Dubai.

World champions Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan and Yu Xiaohan/Huang Yaqiong (both China) have made the list, as have Denmark’s Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl, Korea’s Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee and Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan, and Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ya Ching/Wu Ti Jung.

Mixed Doubles defending champions Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen qualify in top spot, followed by Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong in second. This means their Chinese compatriots, third-placed Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping, miss out.

World champions Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir (Indonesia), Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet, Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto, England’s Chris Adcock/Gabrielle Adcock, Malaysia’s Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing and Japan’s Kenta Kazuno/Ayane Kurihara are the others who have qualified.

Thanks, Master for starting the thread.

Can you change the title of this thread to qualification and seeds (or Dubai ranking instead)?

Perhaps a separate thread for group stage and another thread for the elimination rounds.... thanks..

if not, this thread could run into more than 100 pages, which maybe kinda long to read....

again, thanks for starting a great thread..

I've been hoping both He Bingjiao and Chen Yufei get to play at Dubai but unlikely for the latter unless both Nozomi and Sato give up their tickets, slim chance of that happening.

Nozomi has missed a QF in Japan + the Denmark, French, China, and Hong Kong Open to make sure she is in perfect condition to play Dubai Finals. No way that she will give up that ticket lol....

HBJ and CY would therefore have had to better the score of Carolina Marin who is far far ahead of either of them.

Okay. I will make another one for knockout stages while this thread will include group stages. I'll make sure it doesn't reach 100 pages.
I'm watching the posting progression. Sure! Thanks...

The list updated at Post #2.

Sadly, Chen Yufei at No.8 only gets to go if one of the other top 8 withdraws as Nozomi at No.9 gets automatic qualification for being the reigning WC.

Indeed. Not like she was "stolen" lol.. Even without the automatic qualification Nozomi would have just needed a R1 loss in HK to qualify ahead of Chen Yufei... (basically just had to play 1 point and retire).

The arguably sad part is really about Takamatsu and Wang/ Huang who are nearly 30,000 points ahead of the last qualifiers but yet will not receive invitations because of the 2 per country rule (although I tend to agree with the rationale behind it)

Again, either you misread or overthink what I expressed.

To explain, my post is not between Chen Yufei at No.8 and Nozomi at No.9 whom I knew from the beginning she is automatically qualified but that Chen Yufei, partly due to the draws at CO R1 and HKO QFs where she faced TTY twice, just failed to earn more points to get higher up in the SS Standings, that's why I also said she "only gets to go if one of the other top 8 withdraws"

One claims to be a cunning linguist, the other a law student, I'd like to credit both of you with more intelligence than that. Sigh.

Looks to me Cunning Linguist is more cunning than linguist.:)

Sadly, Saina did not manage to overcome He Bingjiao and Chen Yufei to participate in Dubai

Was really hoping her to overcome these 2 to create history when WS has no China reps after total domination in 2010-ish

Poor acting with your crocodile tears. First, you've to put Saina in Chen Yufei's shoes and ask whether she can beat Tai Tzu Ying once, let alone twice in two weeks, not to mention losing to CYF in R2 of the HKO.:)

How did He Bingjiao come into the equation ? Was Saina slated to meet HBJ either at the CO or the HKO ? Do you know what you're grumbling about ?:confused:o_O:rolleyes:

Let's take a look at it then, shall we?

You would like for someone to withdraw so you can see your favourite play, we get it. But it's a pretty harsh wish if you think about it, really. Given that somebody would withdraw from such an event only due to injury and that every other player except HBJ is miles ahead of her in the rankings (read: more deserving), this is something very few people would agree with (hint: only you. It's only you, man).
But then again, we're probably all just overthinking your clever, profound post. :D

She had all year to gain points, just like everybody else. She never made an ss final, she made a single semifinal and everyone you wish to see withdraw has either won a title or made at least a final. Maybe if she had taken advantage of her easy draw in Indonesia, or her easy draw in Australia, or had just won a few more matches by playing just a little better, she would have been able to make up those
FOURTEEN THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND TEN WHOPPING POINTS
    that seperate her from Marin.

Why do you feel the need to insult someone who disagrees with you? I can't speak for Maurice, but I'm a sensitive person and get easily hurt when someone I look up to questions my intelligence. Which is why I'm perfectly fine right now.

It's a wordplay, honey. If you left your flat every once in a while and learned about something called "women", you might even get it some distant day. ;)

hahahhahaaa you thought that it was crocodile tears, but that actually my real feeling because I was already hoping for Saina to overcome the Chinese duo since the mid-year after Saina showing good improvement and performance during and after WC

So why He Bingjiao? Because 'Was really hoping her to overcome these 2 to create history when WS has no China reps after total domination in 2010-ish'

Initially I didn't want to write this part about Saina. But since you also do the same with Chen Yufei, I also just wrote down what I also feel about Saina ;)
