We'll find the answer in two days ahead. First semifinal tomorrow will pit three-time champion Korea and new developed badminton nation Thailand. Korea reversed their 2-3 defeat against Chinese Taipei in group-stage, coming to Gold Coast with their combination of upcoming and established players, it's obvious men's doubles become their weakest link post Rio Olympic Games. On the other side, the sensational team Thailand knocked out one of strong contender Denmark in last eight, thanks to fast improved doubles discipline. Team event specialist Korea has slight advantage over Thai squad, Son Wan Ho and reigning All England Champion Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee should be their main ammunition to earn winning point while Thailand is favoured to seal mixed doubles match. A clash of two elite women's singles player, Ratchanok Intanon v Sung Ji Hyun also men's doubles as well will determine their fate here. Another interesting and close call semifinal tie will present title-holder China face neighbouring country Japan, a rematch of 2015 Sudirman Cup Final. Japan will pose toughest rival for China to extend supremacy in this edition of world mixed team championships. The mighty China blanked India 3-0 despite high intense to seal crucial opening match, world number two Lu/Huang overcame their pressure to prevail over inspiring duo Rankireddy/Ponnappa, followed by two Olympic Champions Chen Long, Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan to defeat Kidambi Srikanth and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty respectively. Japan just repeated their group-stage result over Malaysia, 3-1. When Rio silver medalist Goh/Tan failed once again to beat Kamura/Sonoda then Malaysian journey is destined, only the always dependable Lee Chong Wei delivered sole point for Malaysia. Assuming China bags two points through men's singles and mixed doubles while Japan is favoured to own women's department considering their performance lately then men's doubles will be decisive match between Kamura/Sonoda against most likely Fu HF/Zhang N.
The JPN vs CHN semi-final is basically the Final-- the winner will likely take the Sudirman Cup against KOR or THA...
it's most likely that China to field a girl to have double duties, WD and XD thus force the XD to play first. the theory is it will be a fairly certain win for China and hopefully to release pressure for teammates to play after. my guess is Chen Qingchen to be selected as she is probably better in the WD match, if it comes to that.
so if a girl has to do double duties, then XD gets played first. if a boy has to do double duties, then XD gets played last. is that the rule? what if a girl from CHN has to do double duties and a boy from JPN has to do double duties, what happen then?
Rule 13.1.4 above applies, i.e. Mixed Doubles – Men’s Singles – Women’s Singles – Men’s Doubles – Women’s Doubles
this is getting interesting if Japan anticipated China to field a girl double duties to force the XD to play first Japan could counter measure by fielding 1) a girl to play WD & XD, or man to play MS & XD thus playing order will be Women’s Singles – Men’s Singles – Women’s Doubles – Men’s Doubles – Mixed Doubles
if Japan is bold enough they could have the play order as Men’s Doubles – Women’s Doubles – Men’s Singles – Women’s Singles – Mixed Doubles by fielding a MD/XD double duties in effect forfeit the XD, probably not a bad choice
so CHN and JPN will submit their names 8 hours before the start of the game? when will we know the order of play?
yes, 8 hrs prior to the start to submit the composition of the team then we should know the order of play
This would be the optimal play-order, as Japan's MS is hopelessly outclassed and their MD & XD are shaky at best-- getting ahead in first in WS & WD would put pressure on the Chinese team... but either way, it will the MDs who decide the tie.
I don't think the Japanese team can win both the women's disciplines, so my prediction is the Chinese team will win either straight 3-0 or 3-1 depends on the order of play. Eager to see some Chinese scratch pair against Matsutomo/Takahashi, whichever pair that has the best winning odds... can't remember which Chinese pair that ever won over Matsutomo/Takahashi within the last six months.
This semi final set up is unfair. The winner among China and Japan gets significantly less time to recuperate before playing the finals the day after at 1 Pm.
But there is simply no other ways to make the schedule fairer without extending the tournament days (more expenses), while if they run two courts simultaneously folks will complain that they can't watch the match fully... (I assume one ticket for two sessions thus no commercial motive to split it into 2 sessions, purely for the joys of spectators to watch one after another).
One small thing they could have done is to keep the next day's match at 6 PM. Having a match start at 6 PM the previous day, and which could easily extend to 10 or 11 PM, and then literally go and play the next match at 1 PM isn't fair. The most optimal thing would have been to hold the two matches simultaneously. But if that was not available, another thing could have been to hold a semifinal today itself. 2 Quarterfinals were played on Thursday, so their victors could have played today. The thing is that BWF to me seems to callous in not giving players appropriate rest of a full day for a final of such a big event.
For finals in Sudirman and Thomas/Uber, I think it is better that the tie should consist of 7 matches with 4 singles and 3 doubles instead of the current 5 matches with just 2 singles and 3 doubles.
