I'm pretty sure BWF and the sponsors would rather have Chen Long participating than not - his prominent standing now esp after his Rio'16 triumph, his badminton prowess and outstanding accomplishments, eg Olympic gold, twice WC in 2014 and 2015, consistently top 2 world ranking, as well as a whole host of prestigious title wins, will indubitably enhance the SSF as the culmination event of the SuperSeries and help draw in the crowd and attract more viewership.

In fact, not having him would somewhat diminish the high prestige and appeal of the SSF. Just ask BWF, the big-time sponsors and the Dubai organizer itself who spent a considerable amount to outbid other places for the right to host the SSF for three consecutive years. Dubai, as we know, has a reputation of successfully hosting a number of world class high profile sporting events in recent years.

Chen long, I venture to say, had better 'give face' and fulfill his obligation as the reigning World And Olympic Champion to take part in the SSF. I mean Chen long's personal concern that he is not in tip-top condition to do well in the SSF is secondary to the primary objective of the SSF itself.

Wild card @ Dubai SSF also using such as criteria as I posted before. It's not BWF discretion power in sending Chen Long instead of Hu Yun (the next eligible player that have right to joining Dubai SSF).

Any wild cards or wild cards alike used by a specific rules.

If in Olympic said only 2 limitation per NOC no wild card could be given to any third player/pair even if they qualified by given criteria to grab any wild card.

The same implication always received by the player with lowest rank whose player qualified will be replaced by the wild card's player.

The spot with wild card AND the spot without wild card should be well known by any players who compete to grab one spot since in the beginning the race begin. But the complaint usually at the end of the race, because they said it's not fair enough or bla bla bla... Frankly after that the complaint gone with the wind and the game continued like no complaints were there.

How about Zhang Nan/Fu Haifeng? Will Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen replace them?

Confirmed: Chen Long and Zhang Nan/Fu Haifeng declined the wild card invitation to Dubai SSF.

Lucky Qualifiers: Dubai World Superseries Finals
    http://bwfbadminton.com/2016/12/10/lucky-qualifiers-dubai-world-superseries-finals/

Hong Kong’s Hu Yun, China’s Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen and Malaysia’s Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei found themselves heading to Dubai after three qualifiers declined/ withdrew from the Dubai World Superseries Finals.

While China’s Chen Long (Men’s Singles) and Zhang Nan/Fu Haifeng (Men’s Doubles) declined the wild card invitations they received as Olympic gold medallists, Indonesia’s Greysia Polii/Nitya Krishinda Maheswari (Women’s Doubles) withdrew due to Maheswari’s knee surgery. All three of the new invitees replaced the earlier qualifiers by virtue of their place in the Destination Dubai Rankings.

I am sick of the players that don't play because they "rest" after Olympics. In HK open, the line up was so weak it was like a GP Gold. It was annoying coming from LD, but LD is LD, while for the others it is despicable, a crude lack of respect for the circuit.

It happens once every four years.

There is good and bad. I prefer to see it as a chance for other players to grab as an opportunity and get Super Series experience. There were a number of upsets along the way and this should only serve to motivate up and coming players.

Professional players , like everybody else, after months of intense preparation and hard work toward a big event would naturally want to unwind and take a well-deserved break, albeit a short one.

Indeed, this offers the non-Olympians and others, esp the up-and-comers and newcomers, a timely opportunity to prove themselves and grab what they are capable of. In fact, a few have started to show their worth.

She's not in her best fitness and ideal condition to compete. Her last several tournaments just for reconditioning to be back in the real game.

    She's in her vacation maybe.
