Nozomi Okuhara and RI have withdrawn.. RI withdrawn from a 4th consecutive SS, and NO from her 3rd consecutive; having withdrawn from 6 SS tournaments this year :/ As a result she will most likely fail to qualify for the SS finals where she is the defending champion..

WS definitely going through some kind of crisis. Let's hope we see a better turnout next year. Really missing watching LXR and top-shape SN, RI, NO.Although it's great to see some new faces /

The ever enthusiatic Viktor Axelsen has also withdrawn. According to his instagram account he is taking a week's rest. Most likely we will see a new face as MS champion unless JOJ strikes gold twice.

Axelsen had withdrawn on 28th October before BWF conducted the draw => http://system.bwfbadminton.com/uploads/2016/10/31/Hong Kong Open SS 2016 - MQ Ver 3.xlsx

MS underdogs should capitalise this rare opportunity in the absence of current world's top 4. New Superseries champion emerged in Odense and Paris recently, it's interesting stuff whether we'll see the same outcome here.

It's good to see new faces on the highest podium.
It used to be always LCW.

Should this tournament be degraded to a GPG level ?

@Cheung......It suffers a lot from the CHN SSP.

i really hope Ihsan can pass the 1st round vs. Huang Yuxiang and then face unfortunately to meet Anthony Ginting if he can beat Ajay Jayaram.
Why did Jojo withdraw; He should have waited a bit because LCW also withdrew :(

The doubles categories are still competitive, leaving MS in 'abnormal' situation here due to some top names withdrawals and I believe it will be back to normal in All England 2017. It's interesting to wait what will happen next, will the promising youngsters shine and steal the limelight in 2017?

Jonatan suffered thigh injury from Europe tour last month according to PBSI official twitter, he also will pull out in Macau Open next week.

it fulfils all tbe requirements of a Superseries :) They are very careful to fulfil the requirements that BWF demands and also have total prize money comfortably above the minimum amount needed for a Superseries.

You will have to make a more convincing argument about degrading it. :)

Just because some of the old guards and old faces withdrawn doesn't mean the new guards and newer faces aren't as good or not able to rise to the occasion.

Post-Rio'16, I already see several of them taking up the mantle and even pushing out some of the old guards around, this is clearly happening in all the five disciplines, and, perhaps, in MS, LCW and Chen Long (when he returns to form) and in WS, LXR, can stave off the challenge.

If Jan O Jorgensen manage to reach final stage at #HongkongSS, he will become BWF World No.2 and degrade Chen Long to 3rd place.

    Jan O Jorgensen
    73.662 QF
    75.042 SF
    76.422 RU
    77.822 Champ

    Chen Long
    76.144

    Lee Chong Wei
    79.563

LCW still secure at No.1 and the race will continue at Dubai SSF to proof the one who deserve to be No.1
