And it is televised all around the world. How come he dares to do this?? Thank God Matsutomo or Takahshi is no Taufik Hidayat. Or else he will refuse to play and this will be big issue on newspaper tomorrow.
Hasn't it always been some sort of a rule that does not allow the umpire and service judge to be from the same nationality as either one of the opposing players/teams? How in the world did BWF manage to look pass this obvious setup!?
Omg even Gilian is still not over that disgusting behaviour ! She made a reference about "no challenge? that reminds of me of that challenge in the second set of the first match."
Gillian Clark made the comment that she saw the Hawkeye result and it showed was in. Likely the Chinese umpire knew the call was going to be IN and he decided to give the game to his country by refusing the challenge. The Japanese did not delay in the challenge request, but the Umpire knew that. That's one of the reasons I seldom watch China sponsored tournaments.
Clearly. And that was on TV for everyone to see. The fact that he refused for 5 long minutes to even call the court referee was unbelievable. Matsumoto raised her arm for so long, I thought she was gonna get a cramp or something
Challenges must be made immediately after the shuttle has landed and the call made by the line judge and before the commencement of the serve for the next rally. A player/pair should clearly state “Challenge” to the umpire and signal their request by raising their hand/arm simultaneously. http://www.bwfbadminton.org/news_item.aspx?id=73448 unfortunately it only says Immediately...
In that case it was not "immediate". Also, it can be very ambiguous, as different umpires would have different notions as to which call is immediate. But in case of Japanese pair the call was immediate by every definition of the word. Real shame there.
Let's hope BWF will review the case involving the JPN WD being denied the right to challenge and take the appropriate action. Such behaviour by anyone should never be tolerated or condoned anywhere as it'd only bring shame, disgrace and disrepute to their own kind, whatever their nationality.
True, the word 'immediate' is subjective and not properly defined, thus giving rise to disputes, abuse or controversies. That always happens whenever a rule or law is not very clear and subject to interpretation. The phrase,'before the commencement of the serve for the next rally', implies to me the party who wishes to challenge the linecall has at least a few seconds to consider because it takes a while for the server to get ready to serve. Anyway, that's a topic for another discussion. As an aside, frankly, I didn't watch the JPN WD match involved in the controversy as I came in late and only managed to catch the Chen Long - Shi Yuqi match from the end of G2 onward. My remarks are based on what you guys wrote here and I hope to see the same people decry such incidents no matter who the culprit or victim was, and not be hypocritical and double-standard about it. Let's all be fair, objective and impartial as we humanly could, and avoid making gratuitous remarks like 'that's one of the reasons I seldom watch China sponsored tournaments.'
Exactly, the tournament referee should step in to find out what happened, why and act according to the best of his knowledge and experience even if uninvited seeing the dispute lasted quite a while on court.
In the first place, the umpire shouldn't be from the same country as the competing players. This already invited negative ideas.
Li Yinhui is a hard-hitter at the back, that's one of the reasons Zhang Na picked her as his XD partner for a start,I guess. Of course, she has to be good enough at the front court too but still room for improvement in this regard. Zhao Yunlei is a hard act for her to follow , for sure.
I believe this happens everywhere , esp in the early rounds with so many matches played on different courts. How many foreign umpires are available ? What's the BWF regulation on this ? Besides, the umpires are humans, they need rest too, you don't expect them to be on duty hours on end. I suppose there's a duty roster for it.
