Prannoy (IND) v Viktor Axelsen (DEN) - Ratchanok Intanon (THA) v Minatsu Mitani (JPN) - He Bingjiao (CHN) v Natsuki Nidaira (JPN) - Chen Yufei (CHN) v Nozomi Okuhara (JPN) - Conrad/Kolding (DEN) v Kamura/Sonoda (JPN) - Fukushima/Hirota (JPN) v Pedersen/Juhl (DEN) - Chan PS/Goh LY (MAS) v Arends/Piek (NED) A bad day for almost all fourth seeds, Tian Houwei-Tai Tzu Ying-Naoko Fukuman/Kurumi Yonao-Chris Adcock/Gabrielle Adcock got first round casualty, leaving Endo/Hayakawa to stay longer in this competition. Men's singles top-three seeds as expected progressed without much trouble, both India and Korea have guaranteed 1 quarterfinal spot. Tian Houwei who managed All England runner-up last March was ousted by the unseeded Hsu Jen Hao in really tiring 90 minutes clash. Another gruelling opening round also saw Lee Hyun Il, Srikanth Kidambi and Prannoy edged past their respective opponents. Both Kuncoro and Vittinghus who topped podium in Singapore and Sydney couldn't repeat their magic performance here, lost to Ajay Jayaram and Qiao Bin respectively, the latter is awarded to meet world number one Lee Chong Wei tomorrow. One remaining Chinese hopeful in this category, Shi Yuqi continues his impressive run after won INA Masters recently, downed 8th seed Tommy Sugiarto convincingly, 21-15 / 21-7. Inconsistency problem still disrupts Tai Tzu Ying performance, the 22 years old Taiwanese lost to home player, Sayaka Sato. Looking at women's singles second round draw, it looks like Japan against the rest of the world, in the absence of some elite players. Two local highest-ranked Nozomi Okuhara and Akane Yamaguchi are expected to face off at last eight. A possible intriguing quarterfinal showdown at top-half of draw will pit former world champion Ratchanok Intanon against China upcoming player He Bingjiao. The left-handed He will find stern test at last sixteen, reigning WJC bronze medalist Natsuki Nidaira who dump her in Peru last year. A big upset saw men's doubles top-seed Chai/Hong succumbed to the unheralded German pair Lamsfuss/Seidel. The Chinese placed fourth position at Rio Olympic Games and what a dramatic turnaround in this tournament. Former champion Ahsan/Setiawan who targeting to retain their 2013 title almost found the exit door by English duo Briggs/Wolfenden. Other title contenders clear first hurdle and expected will meet tougher challenge next. One of home leading ladies combination, Fukuman/Yonao who snatched bronze medal at last year World Championships were eliminated by 2015 SIN Superseries winner, Ou DN/Yu XH. The Chinese duo occupied #10 in 2015 but they didn't compete for almost 1 year and their world ranking have plummeted to #284. The newly-crowned Olympic Champion Matsutomo/Takahashi got first round bye and will start their campaign tomorrow. English married couple, The Adcocks continue lacklustre trend, lost to Korean Kim GJ/Shin SC this time in straight sets. Two Chinese mixed doubles pairs, Lu K/Huang YQ and Zheng SW/Chen QC exhibited shaky performance to lose first game before tuned in in next two games against lower-ranked combination. Top-seed Ko SH/Kim HN, Rio silver medalist ChanPS/Goh LY also defending champion Fischer/Pedersen had good start to pass first round comfortably.
The Adcock's are doing astonishingly bad. It's not that they're bad players but it's like they've lost their hunger
Post Olympic disappointment and a long journey I guess. They really fancied their chances for an Olympic medal and when you see the rest of team GB doing so well....
I would say their biggest obstacles are themselves. I.e. Applying different tactics against different opponents and having the tenacity to keep going when the going gets tough.
