The underdogs steal the show, Chen-Lee showdown is on course

Massive upsets for men's singles discipline as none of seeded players survive at lower half of draw, only two left at top-half, top-seed Chen Long and fifth seed Chou Tien Chen. Two qualifiers played beyond expectation, Sakai and Ginting to produce stellar performance here.

The Olympic Champion Lin Dan uninspiring performance continues, this time succumbed to local youngster Angus Ng Ka Long. Another seeded player also found finish line early, Kento Momota was stunned by Indonesia new talent Anthony Ginting. China has secured one semifinal berth as Wang Zhengming will face his younger compatriot Tian Houwei, the latter overpowered defending champion Son WH yesterday. Both giant-killer Angus Ng-Ginting will take on Chinese Taipei star Chou Tien Chen and Japanese qualifier Kazumasa Sakai. Tian, Wang, Sakai and Ginting should capitalize this rare opportunity to cruise into final of Superseries tournament. All badminton fans will eye to mouth watering clash, Chen Long-Lee Chong Wei quick rematch, highly confidenced and hungry Lee looks on fire to repeat his successful over twice World Champion unless Chen is mentally prepared to redeem a humiliating defeat at Fuzhou last Sunday.

Women's singles hot favourite Carolina Marin has bright chance to overcome Thailand player Porntip Buranaprasertsuk. Marin displayed her superiority to eliminate Japanese talented teen Akane Yamaguchi at last sixteen. Two close contests will present former champion Wang Yihan against familiar foe Sung Ji Hyun and last year final rematch, Tai Tzu Ying opposes Nozomi Okuhara. One remaining quarterfinal tie will pit former world champion Ratchanok Intanon v recent Korea Grand Prix Gold winner Sayaka Sato, Intanon was forced to play rubber games against Mitani at second round.

Indonesian men's doubles pairs make amends to book positive result here, defending champion Ahsan/Setiawan took revenge over China back-up pair Wang/Zhang at last sixteen and next will take on newly-crowned China Premier champion Kim GJ/Kim SR. Both Pratama/Suwardi and Gideon/Sukamuljo will be waited by heavyweight rival, reigning All England winner Boe/Mogensen and Korean dynamic duo Lee YD/Yoo YS respectively. China hopeful Chai B/Hong W will face complicated task to overcome Malaysian number one Goh VS/Tan WK who eliminated former world champion Ko SH/Shin BC yesterday.

One semifinal ticket has been ensured by Japanese women's doubles pair through Matsutomo/Takahashi v Fukuman/Yonao. Two Korean combination at bottom half of draw, Chae YJ/Kim SY-Chang YN/Lee SH will meet tough opponent, recent Korean Superseries champion Maheswari/Polii and Chinese junior-senior partnerships Tang YT/Yu Y respectively. The big match of this stage should be the reigning Olympic Champion Tian Q/Zhao YL against Danish finest pair Pedersen/Juhl, they met twice this year in Jakarta world meet and Denmark Premier with Chinese ace won these ties.

Both China and Korea show their domination in mixed doubles last eight as they have three representatives each. The invincible Zhang/Zhao will up against their last week China Open hurdle, Jordan/Susanto who succeeded to thwart local favourite Reginald Lee CH/Chau HW last night. China-Korea encounters will see Xu/Ma against Yoo YS/Chang YN and Liu C/Bao YX challenge the much-improved Ko SH/Kim HN. One more Korea combination, Shin BC/Chae YJ is favoured to tame Japanese duo Kazuno/Kurihara.

LIVE TV (court 1, 06.30pm local time) matches :

    1) Ratchanok Intanon (THA) v Sayaka Sato (JPN)
    2) Angus Ng Ka Long (HKG) v Chou Tien Chen (TPE)
    3) Chen Long (CHN) v Lee Chong Wei (MAS)
    4) Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl (DEN) v Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei (CHN)
    5) Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang (KOR) v Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan (INA)

After 7-3 good start, the error-proned Jordan produced uncharacteristic errors, made China pair leads 11-9 at interval.

Jordan/Susanto forced rubber games, 21-17. A high quality XD match, both pairs have equal chance to progress.

Z/Z seems to be mastering winning in 3 sets. Probably the greatest ever at it now.

There is no difference between these two teams. Just last point because of the mistakes by Jordan. Well played by praveen/Debby.

But the Golden Pair hasn't been looking sharp of late. No worries, actually, all athletes go through some less-than-ideal period, impossible to be on top of their game all the time, just not human. Better to peak at the right time.

The more patient left-hander Tian HW won over the careless Wang ZM.
