    About Axiata Cup

The Axiata Cup badminton championship, sponsored by the Axiata Group, has been successfully held over the last two years and is the “richest team badminton” event in the world today with the prize money of USD1 million. Last year, the event was telecast to over 240 million viewers around the world. This year marks the third edition of the championship which promises to be the best one yet.

Featuring an array of the leading players in the world, Axiata Cup is sanctioned by the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and organised by Total Sports Asia (TSA).

Competing in the annual event are the leading national teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines along with two All Star teams (Asia & Europe). Indonesia was the inaugural winner with Malaysia snatching the title last year.

In the inaugural year 2012, the event received 1st place in the “Event Marketing” category at the prestigious 7th Annual International Sports Event Management Awards (ISEM) in London. Last year, Axiata Cup won the Bronze medal for the “Best Use of Technology” in the ISEM Awards.

Axiata Cup has a strong social media presence and fans will be able to catch all the latest updates and action through the dedicated website, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Axiata Cup was the first badminton event to use innovative virtual branding technology to enhance the in-stadium look. Watch it for yourself live on TV, online or in the stadium.

    Format

National team badminton events, like the Thomas & Uber Cup, have always been the pinnacle of the sport for many decades. Team events, especially involving national outfits, rally fans together like no other competition in badminton in support of their own teams and bring out the best in the players.

Capitalising on the popularity of team badminton events, Axiata Cup has created its own unique set of rules and uses a 4 match format comprising of Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles teams. It is truly a unique format which provides the fans with an exciting mix of matches and showcases the strength of both the Men’s and Women’s game.

Axiata Cup uses a unique league format in which each team plays against each other over a span of 7 days (hosted in Jakarta from 27 November – 3 December 2014) whereby each match won counts as a point in the league table. The top four teams with the most points after the league round qualify for the play-offs which will be held in Kuala Lumpur on 6 and 7 December 2014. The top seeded team will play the 4th best team and the 2nd best team will play the 3rd ranked team.

    Prize Money

Top players in the world are attracted to compete in Axiata Cup thanks to the lucrative prize money that is up for grabs. Sponsored by the Axiata Group, the total prize money for Axiata Cup is USD1 million, which makes it the richest team event in the world.

The winning team walks away with USD400,0000 and the runner up team takes home USD200,000. Sums that are unheard of in team badminton events. Every team will walk away with a share of the USD1 million.

By chance I happen to turn on the TV sport channel and see the Axiata Cup Live, now showing SIN Liang Xiaoyu vs THA Intanon R. LXY should have wrapped G1 but instead squandered a hefty lead as told by the commentator to lose 19-21. Now for G2, 14-13, LXY a slim lead.

Liang Xiaoyu is my favourite SIN player and she's still only 17 years old, I think.

Just found out that Kirsty Gilmour who lost to SIN Chen Jiayuan yesterday, beat Tai Tzu Ying today, 8-21,21-16,and 21-16, surprisingly.

    MAS against Europe All-Stars

Now's the decider in the WS between Tee Jing Yi and Kirsty Gilmour, 20-18 for Tee.

But Kirsty hits long and match went to TJY 21-11, 14-21 21-18. Two matches up for MAS as Daren Liew has beaten Brice Leverdez in the MS earlier.

Of course TJY (WR28) has done a marvelous job of defeating KG (26), who has a higher world ranking. But more importantly is that TJY has been nursing a right knee injury for sometime now. She wore a knee guard, experienced some difficulty getting up and was seen limping on court. Despite her injury she was determined to fight to the last, even to do diving saves. Her never-say-die attitude must have affected KG, who did her best to make TYI run all the four corners.

Here is a real case of an injured player who gave her all to win her match against a higher ranked player. No excuse as far as TJY was concerned.

    Kudos to TJY!
