daren was let down by his nerves in the end. he has the skills, but please cut down on those damn easy mistakes!
I believe he tried his best and his play was respectable. For a person who has had such a lack of form recently, he played well. He couldn't keep up the consistency but this happens if you have had injuries. It's difficult to train for consistency under pressure if your body and mind are not 100%. Look at the difference between the world ranking of Daren Liew and Takuma Ueda - it's a huge difference.
it is time for him to learn the worse mistakes he made recently, or else he will never be like or more than LCW...
I am very disappointed by Liew Daren, not only for this match but for the past year because I know he can do so much better. There is someone who has called me out in the Thomas Cup thread and say I overrate Liew Daren too much, but I don't think so - if anyone watched him play the 2012 French Open where he showed the best performance of his career, his skill is definitely up there, no doubt a top 10 player. However, his poor attitude and fitness have caused him to sink further and further into mediocrity as his game became stagnant and possibly even worse due to lack of self-belief and fighting spirit. This is a huge turning point for him. The toughest loss he had in his career - Will this motivate him to finally get working on his weaknesses and train harder than ever? Or will he sink further and further into oblivion?
I think is time for him to seriously think about his future maybe get a job or play tennis instead of playing badminton
I agree with u. Daren played like a novice, choosing to use backhand so many times, surrendering the advantage during the rallies. This bad habit is only found at recreation level, certainly not at Thomas Cup finals.
Daren played with plenty of fighting spirit. He didn't roll over and go kaput. It could have gone either way except it went to Japan. No shame for Daren.
He chose to play backhand instead of overhead. 31 years old chap showed him that in the 1st game. Why can't he ? Now that is what we called a shame.
The match video will become a classic example why the backhand should not be used. There are so many times he could have killed the shuttle with an overhead smash but chose to Pattern. Shameful indeed!
IMHO, it all boils down to his capabilities. His skills, mental and the knowledge of the game eg. what kind of shots should be played and how to execute it. Within those limitations, he did played with fighting spirit and gave his all.
So you see the difference in the world ranking. It's also due to the time he's lost with injury. You can't pull those shots off unless your training program has gone well. Even Usain Bolt can lose if he doesn't get the right preparation. If you really want to point fingers, then the root cause is the lack of depth in the Malaysian squad giving a lack of choice in selection.
