"Hmmmm Cheung , only limited numbers had participated. May be around 20 or 30?. That does not reflect the true situation."

IMO the low poll participation is caused by the less distinctive poll placement (just a normal thread), and there's NO indication in the title that a POLL does exist, one only knows if actually opens this thread.

IMHO, it's best to have only 2 ties

.
IMHO, it's best to have only 2 ties : 1 Singles and 1 Doubles from each nation.

If getting 1-all after the 2 ties, the total points scored should be compared.

If the total points scored are the same; Have a re-match.

We wish to see the best players from each nation competing. China can bring in semi-retired Lin Dan to participate.

Get each nation to submit their best selected/appropriate players for each match. If so, we could get another Lee Chong Wei versus Lin Dan match again. :):):)

Like AlanY says, bring back the best-of-9. That was a true test of team strength.

I do understand the BWF wants to expose the sport to as many countries as possible and it would be unrealistic for many countries to field a team to compete in a best-of-9 format.

You can't be serious there Chris.
Thomas Cup is all about team performance and team work. Every player of a nation wants to do their part, not let their teammates down, cheer them up. Thomas and Uber Cup are really THE event players dream about entering. Its prestige eclipse all other individual tournaments, because winning really represents a nations strength.
What you are proposing looks more like a half sized Sudirman Cup. It may attract viewers, but in no way will it be more popular than the current format.

In tennis, the equivalent is the Davis Cup.
And in golf, the Ryder Cup is THE most prestigious event, whether Team or individual. Every golfers want to be in the team. And when they make it, the sheer excitement and stress level of the players skyrocket, much more than any other major tournament they've been in. A crowd cheering a team is much more noisy and stressful than a crowd cheering a single player. That's what brings the excitement.

in the first inception of Thomas/Uber Cup, it was a best of 9 events tournament, and the matches spans 2 days.

in mid 80's, they changed it to the current best of 5 format.

in true honestly, although the best of 9 format was exciting, it was too long.

best of 5 is just the right length. it was enough to test the depth of a nation, as well as long enough to create an exciting spectacle for badminton fans. imagine you go out of your way to travel to the venue to watch the final, and then have to go home after 2 matches?!? that's just ridiculous.

I agree the best-of-5 is about the sweet spot right now for a team event. Personally I would not settle for anything less than that, both from a purist or spectator point of view.

Would be interesting if they reintroduced the best-of-9 in one off tests between countries. CHN v INA would indeed be sumptuous.

best of 9 was interesting. it wasn't really testing much more depth, as they allow players to repeat events. it was more of a "group" format where they play combination of single encounters as well as combination of doubles pairing.

it was interesting in its own right but seems unnecessary given how long it drags on. die hard fans like us would sit 2 days for it, but most spectators will probably wonder when it will end.

They drag a best-of-5 Davis Cup tie over 3 days. How bad can 2 days be?

People just don't have the patience these days to watch anything lasting more than 2 hours. It's an ADD society craving instant gratification. So sad.

not really right. ppl still watch Davis Cup, TV still broadcast them, and sponsor still pay good money for it.

but once the word "badminton" is used, no one cares. the problem is not the format, dumbing things down will only make badminton even more dumb. they need to fix the root of the problem.

I should have said badminton spectators.

You hit the nail on the head. In their quest to attract casual spectators, the BWF's constant dumbing down to their level is making the sport more and more of a joke.

I can see in 2 years, all teams events will forced to become a best-of-3

Individual matches will be reduced to a pathetic 5 pt x 5 game sprint.

...SIGH!...

yup. the issue is that broadcaster simply don't think ppl want to watch badminton. it is a matter of demand and supply, simple economics. the cost here is air time. the demand is low and the supplier (the broadcaster) don't want to pay their limited air time to badminton, therefore they tell BWF to shorten the game. once it is shorten, badminton will become even more of a joke.

the real issue is the demand, why do people not want to watch badminton? how do we make badminton more desirable to watch? we need to fix the image of the sport, as well as the presentation, and also we need to make people want to watch our stars. public relations, presentation, image. these are hard problem but the root of the problem to be fixed.

Don't you think that one of the roots of the problem is the BWF pandering too much to the non-Asian market? They are dying to break into these new markets but at what cost? I understand the TV dollars issue but the BWF needs to stop over-tinkering with the sport until it becomes totally unrecognizable. If it keeps changing formats, audiences will never be able to keep up with it and simply migrate to something easier to relate to. Simply shortening the format is not the answer. As a spectator point of view, I would feel cheated watching a match where it's over before it barely gets going.

that's not the root of the problem. that's just BWF fixing the problem the wrong way.

i do think there are issues with badminton popularity. but the scoring isn't it, and neither is the length of the game. those are just excuses TV execs use to get rid of badminton or trying to get BWF people out of their sight.

changing the scoring yet again will make things worse for sure.

Badminton is too cheap a sport - users included.

Look at how people are trying to source cheap shuttles. In tennis, you just go and buy the cans and racquets.

For badminton racquets, so many people are trying to drive the profit margin down. What incentives are there if profits are not to be made?

Make badminton more profitable for sponsors and bigger companies come in.

Basically, badminton has cheap consumers for a cheap sport. Harsh reality.

Snow boarding is cool but still doesn't get huge sponsorship.

Like it or not, to make the sport global and attract big money, you have to get the European market heavily involved. For that, there have to be more star players from Europe. Doing it by lowering the standard to hopefully have some one-time wonders is shooting yourself in the foot. There're already quite a lot of people who actually play badminton in Europe. I don't have figures, but I would not be surprised the number is higher than tennis. Most people only watch tennis on TV.

There's a lack of know-how in general how to get the basics correct. Even among the professional coaches, I wonder how many of them are truly professional as their Asian counterparts. I've recently watched some videos on Youtube showing how badminton was played in 1940s. Compared to modern days, it's impressive to see skillwise how much the sport has advanced but surprising that the understanding of the sport for some is not too much better than in those days. Some professional players don't even seem to hit or move better than some random Asian kids I've seen on court. Until this is solved, I don't see how they could really expand the sport into the west in general.

Popularity for the game has nothing to do with how cheap the sport can be. Football aka soccer in the US is extremely cheap. You need a ball, running shoes... and two or more people playing the game. You don't have a football? Get a tennis ball, anything round will do.
But football players get paid in the millions per year, so many sponsors, broadcasts, talk shows, football is international. Personally, I don't even see the appeal in watching football. But the constant hammering of football everywhere makes people tune in, brainwashes them to watch football, to like it. Football fans don't even play the game, they just watch it.
Whichever reasons why football is popular is irrelevant now because investors know this is where the money should be. Hence the cycle just keeps growing, and more money gets injected into the game.

So how do you make badminton more popular? Put matches on TV, make talk shows about badminton, talk about it in the radio, put radio commentators for live match as if it were a football match (and these guys are really hyped up when they talk lol), make people excited about a game they don't know or don't even like... in short brainwash them so they tune in, and make them like it. And the more people gets excited about the game, the more sponsors will come in.

And how do you make TV channels broadcast badminton? Become a media mogul .... And, I say that in all seriousness, because anything short of that won't do it...

i think Cheung means how cheap the players are. over here, we have many different badminton clubs. they charge around $300-$400 year fee for unlimited use of the courts. in any measure, that's very affordable, as people are talking about $30-35/month. tennis club or many fitness club charges way more than that. but people still complain, they want the fee to be $200/year.

also, the popularity of soccer around the world has a lot to do with the gambling, betting on football matches are rampant in any corner of the world. that's also why something as boring and stupid as horse racing is also rather popular. when there is gambling money involved, there is popularity.
