Because there is more than two rallies in one game. The game isn't just many different rallies, it is a whole game. The breaks between the rallies are very essential for the game, lots of mental stuff happens there... So yes, it is distracting. And it's part of the nature of this sport.

I've stopped arguing over the internet but how is it unfair to the opponent? If the players direct their shouts towards their opponents the umpire steps in and tells them to stop. Most players (including May and Marin) turn away before getting vocal.

It is weird...that Polish players had booked flights to leave tonight..they had packed their bags Dan stored at Players' lounge and will leave in 20 minutes...no wonder they did not fight at all

I am seeing Marin for the first time today. A little exclamation is tolerable after a point, but I see (hear) what you guys mean by the loud shouts. She seems to try to turn away from her opponent, at least. But one can see how it could be off-putting.

The Spanish (to make a huge stereotype) are so passionate that it might be hard to convince her to change. It would be interesting to see if there was as much comment on the forum if it was a guy doing the yelling. Would we be making excuses for a guy 'just expressing his natural competitiveness'.

At any rate, we should be glad that she's not tearing her clothes like countryman Pablo Abian in WC2011.

Michael Fuchs is a screamer, I've moaned about him plenty of times on here. I've heard similar complaints about more than a few men, interestingly all of them are doubles players.

Phill, have you watched the game at all? First of all at least once Carolina has been staring Ratchanok when shouting. Secondly it doesn't really matter if you are shouting towards or away from other player if the level of scream is that high. And thirdly I argue that it is unfair advantage for Carolina as the majority of players in badminton don't do that (at least that often and loudly.). That is not sportmanship. And I don't say that Carolina is doing it to harm her opponent's game but anyway it certainly has affection and that is why she shouldn't do that.

Hmm.. But in my opinion the biggest problem is the frequency with Carolina. When she wins the point (no matter how she wins it....) there is the first scream then another and then third one before the next rally. There is of course many male players who screams / shouts but I don't know any with that frequency and length of shouts..

Note how we use tend to use the unpleasant word "scream" for females but "shout" for men.

I'm not condoning the noise ---I don't like it either. But the way we use language affects how we think of the issue.

A scream implies a high pitch, not many men can scream in a natural sounding way. Only Bodin Issara and Michael Fuchs hit high enough a pitch for it to be a scream.
