Time for regeneration .... the last decent Cuba squad was pretty old. They got beat by the not so good Dominican Republic in the qualifying competition final.

Did the USA men get overconfident? Their heads dropped after losing a tight 1st game against Italy .....

But hey, today is the day for the women .... so will the Asian underdogs take a few bites out of the tournament favourites USA and holders Brazil? I hope so .......

There was no escaping Amazonian power this time. Despite their endeavours, Japanese gals just couldn't get through Brazilian blockers. And the Brazilians were so efficient, they could afford to move slowly on court.A warning to USA, the rematch for the gold medal is gonna be different from the group match.

In the battle between the two Asian heavyweights of women's volleyball, the twin Saoris (Kimura and Sakoda) of Japan got the better of the lone Kim Yeon-Koung powered Korea.

Saori Kimura was her usual efficient self, now that she no longer had to tackle Amazonian blockers. But her namesake Saori Sakoda did exceptionally well, taking over from Yukiko Ebata.

Korea was always chasing the game, going down 1-6 and 1-8 at the early periods of the first two games. Did well and worked hard to get the scores respectable, but folded at the critical points.

US defence is so weak... Too nervous ???

    Their smashes not sharp either...

Hooker, Tom and Larsson are off form

Jacque and Luis are on fire...

As efficient and brilliant as the USA girls were in earlier rounds, they are not of Amazonian quality.

Their Brazilian opponents woke up from slumber in a one sided game 1 defeat, and from the first rally of game 2, USA was never in the lead again. Obviously the USA girls are not familiar with coming back from behind - something Brazil are masters at, as shown in the saving of 6 matchpoints against Russia in the q-finals.

Even the addition of veterans Scott-Arruda and Haneef-Park to try bolster the blocking height didn't make any difference ....

But I must complain on the USA coaching, during the timeouts, the head coach didn't really give any specific instructions on what tactics to change - all he said was about forcing sideouts ...... really, when your team is under pressure, more specific tactical instructions are necessary.

And thus the, ahem, more well endowed and shapely yellow clad Brazilian women ended up defending their title from Beijing. And it would be difficult for other teams to wrest it from their long spiky arms at home ground in Rio in 4 years time.

Good job Russia !!! Come back from 0-2 deficit..

So it's pretty even gold distribution in this event

Volleyball : Men (Russia), Women (Brazil)
Beach : Men (Germany), Women (US)

Brazil has plenty of homework to do in order to make better results in home OG Rio
