He took off more than 3 seconds from his old world record.:eek::eek:

I guess swimming under 14:30 won't be a problem for him.

The Swimming event is ridiculous.. It reminds me of kids birthdays parties where everyone got a medal..

There are far to many events in OG swimming! 102 medals in Swimming, come on its ridiculous!!!!!

I am not at all agains to have swimming in the Olympics, and compete in some reasonable differentiating distances who can swim the fastest.. This makes a lot of sense and is also good fun to watch!

But why Butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, medley.. its a mockery of sport imop. I'ts like having 100m Walk, 100m running backwards, and 100m frog jump apart from running 100m in Athletics...

Come on!! I think it is all good for people to compete in butterfly swimming. But when they talk about cutting events, an do not have great sports like Squash, Sport-climbing, Wushu, Karate etc, they should really cut down on Swimming which is an event that is flooding over with "constructed"!!

If one person can scrape that many gold in swimming its not only because theses are great athletes, it is of course also because the events are way to similar!!!

950 athletes just swimming ins mind-boggling.. And it should really be cut down imop, to get a bigger variety of sports!! We have already seen the badminton doubles events cut down (and fail miserably with the cut down group play versions) with the argument that there are too many athletes in the OG..

So Why does Swimming allow to flood the Olympics with a huge number of "constructed" events.

Lets look at the current events...

    We have:

    Men's 50m Freestyle, Women's 50m Freestyle, Men's 100m Freestyle, Women's 100m Freestyle, Men's 200m Freestyle, Women's 200m Freestyle, Men's 400m Freestyle, Women's 400m Freestyle, Men's 1500m Freestyle, Women's 800m Freestyle, Men's 100m Butterfly, Women's 100m Butterfly, Men's 200m Butterfly, Women's 200m Butterfly, Men's 100m Breaststroke, Women's 100m Breaststroke, Men's 200m Breaststroke, Women's 200m Breaststroke, Men's 100m Backstroke, Women's 100m Backstroke, Men's 200m Backstroke, Women's 200m Backstroke, Men's 200m Individual Medley, Women's 200m Individual Medley, Men's 400m Individual Medley, Women's 400m Individual Medley, Men's 10km Marathon, Women's 10km Marathon, Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay, Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay, Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Rela, Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay, Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay, Women's 4x100m Medley Relay..

ISN'T THAT EXCESSIVE I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS!!!

Ok.. The fastest way of swimming is of course freestyle, where you are allowed to swim as fast as you can, so Why have different competition in how to swim "not so fast as you can"..

Competing in butterfly swimming is like competing in who can Wisper the loudest.. it simply does not make sense..

I would like them to keep the following events:

    1) Freestyle 100m men/women
    2) Freestyle 400m men/women
    3) Freestyle 800m men/women
    5) Freestyle 10km men/women
    6) 4x100m Freestyle relay men/women

that would be enough to figure out who is the best swimmer and nation in swimming 12 gold and 36 medals seems quite OK..

And they would not need to accommodate 950!!!! Swimmers for the games if they cut down the number of disciplines!! 950!!! That's like more than the size of 5!! complete badminton events!!

    :-D

    twobeer, what a great post!!

you should have posted these same lines in "Medal Tally" sub-thread AS WELL :)
    http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php/114924-medal-tally

I've raised the similar concerns there but you've put those lines way much better, much clearer and more coherently!!!

THUMBS UP!! I guess you had an A mark in your writing class while mine was just C :D

Calling the different strokes practically similar because there are multi-medalists yet calling for the inclusion of karate and wushu besides taekwondo and boxing whilst also keeping judo and wrestling ... yeah [IMG] [not that I would mind :p]. If they had their own federations they'd be called a different sport as well ;).

The majority of multi-medals are gained on a double + relays I would assume not different strokes with mostly once a generation swimmers like Spits and Phelps medalling in other strokes. You can cut some distances but that would in effect kill of the distance whilst at the World Championship the difference is more apparent without the two-per-country quota. But I can see some possible cuts like all 50's, 200 free, 4x200 free, 200m medleys, 800 and 1500m.
Not that I have any direct involvement in swimming; just enjoy watching it and the medal count doesn't even figure in my mind and is only apparent if yours doesn't measure up ^^

About the number of participants perhaps we should introduce 8 vs 8 badminton on a bigger court and the best two based on number of points scored/forced qualify from the rounds per heat and a lucky few based on points scored compared to the other groups. What can you do about 8 lanes other than fill them or should it be one-on-one swimoffs R32?
Nowadays there already is only a round 1, semi and final and not even three "semi"-finals like TNF. Swimming and athletics simply are deep-rooted in the American school sports system which is why they produce so many world class athletes. Mostly subsidized by the profits raked in by their American Football programs ...

It's not only the multiple-medals per athlete that is an issue with "whispering the loudest" - type events.. Trying to swim 100m in a stupid less effective way like butterfly is like 100m frogjump in athletics.. It simply does not make sense.. It may be interesting to find out who is the fastest man/woman to swim 100m or to run 100m, but NOT who is the fastst to use "dog swim" or to run backwards!!! This is stupid, and not worhty of the olympics!!!

    my 2 c.
