Seriously IOC should review and cut those stupid events in Swimming. USA is only winning gold from swimming and nothing else. What a cheap nation.
i suggest we should have different type of badminton matches. the 3x 5point match, finishes in 5 mins. requires unhuman attacking power and incredible netshot precision. the 3x 11points match, more endurance needed. the regular 3x 21points match. the extra long 5x 71 points match, ultimate test of endurance, may play over 2 days.
. And Australia is missing on Gold medals. At the end of Friday 03-Aug, we have 1 Gold, 9 Silver, 4 Bronze (14 Total). .
oh wow, USA got 28 medals (14 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze) from swimming alone they should reduce those swimming thing, how many variation do they have in swimming? 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 meters multiply by free style, free style relay, breast stroke, butterfly, and individual medley, multiply by men and women competiton and anyone could explain what is "individual medley"? sounds like a very trivial segment in swimming
And no countries are willing to step in and complain to IOC that Swimming has too many stupid events.. Err everyone is just turning a blind eye to it ? Badminton should have three more events then. Men's team event Women's team event Mixed team event
. For Swimming, they are the events that FINA conduct in their World Championships. For Badminton, they are the events that BWF conduct in their World Championships. And so are the other events conducted by other Sporting Bodies in their World Champioships. .
nothing that says Olympics need to implement all event implemented by the sport federation. in the first time in 1992 Olympics , badminton did not have mixed doubles.
We shall hope that Sir Craig Reedie could do more for Badminton at the Olympic Games . We shall hope that Sir Craig Reedie could do more for Badminton at the Olympic Games. As Swimming alone provides total of 102 medals (G/S/B), I have great wonder of following: (1) Detailed of Total Medal Distribution from Swimming across the participating countries (G/S/B) (2) Proportion of the Swimming Medals versus the TOTAL Medals collected (G/S/B) by each country among the TOP-5 or TOP-10 Countries in Medal count. The similar tabulation for Athletics (47 events; 141 medals) to have some good pictures of both of them. One of the main purposes is to understand where do all the Swimming medals go to since it provides an overwhelming numbers of medals (34 events, 102 medals) compared to rest of Olympic sports (except Athletics). If we have such tabels on hand starting from the 1984 Olympics until 2012 (the last eight Olympics), then we have clear and objective explanations to many questions such as: - is it true or not that Swimming is dominated by any particular country from time to time? what's its total medal distribution? (G/S/B) - is it true or not that Athletics is dominated by any particular country from time to time? what's its total medal distribution? (G/S/B) - how do the Total Medals grabbed from Swimming alone affect the Total Medals got by the TOP-5 or TOP-10 Countries in Medal count? - how do the Total Medals grabbed from Athletics alone affect the Total Medals got by the TOP-5 or TOP-10 Countries in Medal count? And following question may be much more intricate (take more efforts) to find out between Swimming and Athletics. It's very common in swimming that a swimmer is able to win more than one or many medals in one particular Olympics, there's even a case whereas Michael Phelps sensationally grabbed 8 golds from Swimming in Beijing 2008 Olympics. Well, it's just an isolated case but for a swimmer to win 3 or 4 golds is not uncommon. A quick look at Athletics reveals that it provides the much less opportunity for such similar multimedal grabbing by any particular athlete. A good table listing the multimedal takers from both sports in the last 8 OG will clearly indicate such reality. Eventually... does Swimming in fact have too many events thus give out too many medals to favor any country's total medal count? The same question for Athletics. A detailed tabulation of Swimming / Athletics / Total Medals (G/S/B) earned by the TOP-5 or TOP-10 Countries in Medal count from the last eight Olympics should be able to answer the most of the questions! Above questions are quite interesting esp. when we do realize that IOC is SO MEAN to many other Olympics sports regarding the number of events they are allowed to stage... many of those sports are only allowed to have few events in Olympics. So why is IOC so generous to Swimming and Athletics? These facts are indeed provoking one to seek the truths, to see beyond the current horizon. We all are taught in the early days of school that Athletics is “the Mother of all Sports”, so the fact that it has the most number of events is easier to digest. But why so many events in Swimming too? Why is Swimming so important? Is it justifiable for Swimming to have that many events in Olympics? What's the consideration and justification behind that stipulation? Try to put some magnifying glass to EVERY sports within Olympics then one may see the many oddities there. Complete fairness seems to have the elusive, heavenly characteristics... it does exist only in imaginary a harsh reality but i guess every one must live with it. * ps: many other Olympics sports may be somehow dominated by some particular country (or countries) but they all just have limited events... too few to affect the total medal count unlike swimming.
i am afraid, while we can collect those data, the most important data to collect is: how much money does swimming bring in, in terms of sponsorship, TV viewership, etc, etc, compared to other sports. and how much the IOC and organizer will lose if they reduce the number of swimming events.
so at the moment swimming alone spectacularly contributes 2/3 of USA's gold medals (65% in total medal counts (G/S/B)). What a harvest!
You are right, Kwun, i did miss out the commercialization factors earlier. i did said it once, i say it here again... so eventually we back to the square one: "MONEY RULEZ" So indeed what's the ESSENTIAL SPIRIT? --------------- "To see what is in front of one's nose requires a constant struggle." -- George Orwell, 1946
About how our Sporting Bodies/Federations conduct their events . That's what I meant in my earlier post (Post #46) about how our Sporting Bodies/Federations conduct their events. Just look at our most popular sport in the world - Football/Soccer. There are only 2 GOLD medals available; 1 for the Mens' team; and 1 for the Womens'. Can FIFA think of more events to get more medals? I shall think not. .
i do agree that you have brought up good points and the analysis is correct. but having been watching TV here in the US for the last few days, it is very clear what's the focus. every night swimming and gymnastics dominates the prime time money slots. swimming and gymnastics is perfect for primetime, short attention spans suits the modern TV viewers. no one want to spend all those time to even watch a 30mins badminton match. and imagine how much money that would cost if no one want to pay for the time slot. and conveniently they are the events dominated by the US.
"This is a list of most gold medals won in a single Olympic Games. Medals won in the 1906 Intercalated Games are not included. It includes top-three placings in 1896 and 1900, before medals were awarded for top-three placings." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multiple_Olympic_gold_medalists_at_a_single_Games
Chris, football/soccer may not be able to find more events to hold in Olympics; however, a quick look at other sports, there are still more events that can be added. For instance, Badminton can propose up to 8 events (5 individual events similar to the present ones, plus Team events following TC, UC, SC formats); Tennis can have another two Team events (Men's & Women's); Table Tennis can have up to 7 events (5 individuals + 2 Team events), and so on... I'm afraid the issues aren't with those Sport Federations but whether IOC will accept such addition or not! I think those points raised by Kwun are quite relevant. And we all should not underestimate the money factor (commercialization consideration) in picking up which sport or how many events are to be included in Olympics. Indeed i do believe that "money factors" are the most crucial ones! And if we further put a magnifying lens into the organization of IOC, how do they make a decision, how's the voting block, who resides there (what's the representation), etc etc... i think we may find many interesting aspects there I have no idea at all about the decision making process there. The question is...is there "any thing" too sacred beyond the touch there? speaking of unspeakable? For the rest, i mentioned them already in my earlier post here.

seriously wrong with the column 'total', didn't know how i got it wrong. just a bit of fun, wouldn't bother to correct it for now
The "American" bllomberg-way-medalcount to count number of medals, regardless of thier nature is laughable.. China gets 1 gold and US gets one bronze in a team-event.. Yeeah then lets count that like 1-1.. fair enough :-D Sigh
