Oops, meant to post this at this thread but posted at a different thread.

If DPY withdrew, good for Sony. He won't meet DPY in the first round of main draw.

With TA/LN withdrew, if Frans/Shendy won 1st round, they will straight go to QF

Badminton: Derek Wong through to main draw of Li-Ning Singapore Open

By Geoffrey Lip | Posted: 18 June 2012 2142 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore's top male shuttler Derek Wong is through to the main draw of the Li-Ning Singapore Open.

This is after organisers were informed last week's that Indonesian Open winner Simon Santoso had pulled out of the competition, opening the way for Singapore's world Number 47 shuttler to get into the main draw.

Despite several withdrawals, the men's competition is still packed with top-class competitors.

Santoso's more experienced compatriots like former world number one and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat and Sony Dwi Kuncoro are in the fray for the US$200,000 prize.

China has also sent their next wave of superstars to the competition like Indonesian Open finalist Du Pengyu.

And while organisers are disappointed with some of the withdrawals, the Chinese are looking at this as an ideal opportunity to gain valuable experience ahead of the Olympics.

Superseries marketing manager S. Selvam said: "We always like to see a few competitions. But we also understand that players are tired, players have got priorities. We still believe very strongly that there are good players, quality players here at the Singapore Open. With the Olympics, there are many strong opponents who have chosen to come here. So we feel this is a great opportunity."

I think Sony Kuncoro should survive the Qualification Round against Yuhan Tan but will he be too tired thereafter?

Brothers Hendri and Hendra surrendered to Robert Blair and Tan Bin Shen but the latter will have to cross swords with another brother pair of 'retired' Ronald Susilo and bro-in-law Candra Wijaya. A foregone conclusion, I suppose. ;)

Quick question here - I couldn't find Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung in the MD draw, does anyone know whether they are still in the competition or have they withdrew?

Withdrawals will not deter fans: Li-Ning Singapore Open

    By Daniel Teo

Organisers of the Li-Ning Singapore Open are confident the withdrawals of players will not deter fans from catching the action which starts on Tuesday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

15 players including China's women's no.8 Jiang Yanjiao and South Korea's women's no.13 Bae Youn Joo took their names out just days before the start of the Super Series tournament, adding to the five Chinese players who withdrew last month.

But the organisers believe it will attract more local fans as Singapore's Olympic-bound shuttler Derek Wong replaces Indonesia's Simon Santoso in the main draw.

Rose Tan, media director of Li-Ning Singapore Open, said in a press conference on Monday, "Those who come to watch their celebrity players may not turn up.

"But with the latest withdrawals it may be good news because Derek will move into the main draw and there could be more Singapore players moving up and that may attract more local crowd."

She also hopes fans will pack the stadium to give Wong a good send-off to the London Olympics.

She added, "We hope there will be a packed stadium as it would encourage Derek as he represents Singapore in the Olympics."

    S. Selvam, Superseries marketing manager of the Badminton World Federation, gave the reasoning behind the withdrawals and believes there are enough quality players to attract fans.

He said, "It's normal during periods like this when players tend to stay away to prepare for a big competition such as the Olympics.

"The diehard fans will still come and watch. We must not take the credit away from the current batch of players who are here.

"There are many good players here and some of them are the up and coming stars in badminton," he added.

Fans can look forward to watching Olympic men's singles champion Taufik Hidayat in action.

Other notable stars include China's Du Pengyu, Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana, Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh, and Indonesia's Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan.

(I'm afraid the Korean MD Superstars have been omitted from the above :crying:)
And I hope Derek Wong will play above himself!

Previously have seen in the draw that there are not many strong contenders in Singapore SS this year
Even many BYE occurs in WD and XD department

    and ouch..
less than a week before.. some well-known name withdrew :(
Some cases are champions of INA SSP, Simon Santoso and Jung Jae Sung / Lee Yong Dae
    runner-up, Towi/Liliyana

also Jiang Yanjiao, Bae Youn Joo, Firdasari
and Shu Cheng/Pan Pan (not my favorite, but if they just keep playing here, I wonder SF is relatively open for them)

it should not be organizer's fault.
but, I just think, the break time from OG qualification to the day of OG is too long
it costs much the quality of Super Series this event
(even German and Australia GPG have "more" better entries)

Indeed, weak line-up for a SS level :(
    Yup, almost three months...
    30th April 2012 => end of qualification ; 28th July 2012 => badminton OG kick-off

Yes one reason for the poor response must be the closeness to the LOG. And some players are injured, some too tired after their participation in the earlier tournaments like the just concluded INA Open and others need the rest of remaining days to polish up their weaknesses and to take a welcome break.

But the show must go on and it is up to badminton fans especially those from SIN to support the tournament and hopefully be rewarded with some exciting matches.
