Not too surprised by this result. If LCW is anywhere below his "normal" high standards of fitness and play, he would have been vulnerable to Shon. I seem to recall another recent match between the two that had LCW having to dig real deep to assert himself in the end, and even then, it wasn't a very dignified escape. Was it the Korean, or Malaysian open? Sorry, can't remember; and too lazy to find out. :D

But Shon Wan Ho has been a while coming. The signs were there. Congratulations to the Korean! We need more of his ilk...

Is this the greatest achievement by Shon?

His first SS title? And first time beating top ranked player? (Lin Dan, LCW, Chen Long, Chen Jin?)

SWH played exceptionally well and LCW made too many unforced errors.
    Congratulations to the Korean.

100% agreed. Unforced error is what differentiates the top players since the skill levels are about the same. Unfortunately LD hardly makes unforced errors during critical games. So LCW better work on this aspect if he is to have any chance against LD. Yesterday even simple blocks were going into the net.

Which badminton player doesn’t know that mental strength and stamina are important aspects of the game and badminton is not all about attack?. In fact players today are into what is called total badminton and seek to excel in every aspect of the game. The problem here is somebody who choose to fall back on past laurels dragged Susanti’s name into a childish ,if not absurd, post that in her prime she could EASILY beat LXR, and by extension all the players of the present generation, Chinese or non-Chinese. What is more flabbergasting is that he cited the fact that Susanti won two Olympics medals as his reason and challenged LXR to do the same.
I would like to repeat that it is futile to compare players from two different era. As people like to say, we can argue till the cows come home and there will still be no consensus.

Agreed, it is like saying the 70s muscle cars can beat Nissan GTR ;)
Cannot compare like this as everything has improved since her time, only valid comparison is between the players of the same timeline.

it's hard to compare LXR to susi suanti.

but what about ZN or XXF? Has LXR now surpassed ZN or XXF?

If only I have a time machine. Then I can take LXR back to play both ZN and XXF when both are at their peaks. Just a joke. LXR is a very good player. AS someone had posted, how great she will turn out to be is left to be seen. Who knows. China may just churn out another more exciting world beater by "the drop of a hat", to steal the words of another member of this forum.

She won 2 Olympic medals. Only one was gold. I think, may be wrong, she lost to Korean Ban So Yong in Atlanta. Her husband Goei Renfang won gold in 1992 too.

too bad she is 24 already. It's going to be hard for her to make it to 2016.

Yes, she beat Bang Soo Hyun and won gold in 1992. In 1996, she lost to Bang Soo Hyun in semi-final, but beat Kim Ji Hyun in bronze medal match.

Susi Susanti's husband is Alan Budi Kusuma.
Both of them won their respective Single's Gold in 1992 Olympics. They married thereafter, and were called the "golden couple" in badminton. They have 3 children (eldest child will be 14 this year).

Those days the newspapers in China often called them by their Chinese names. Susi was known as Huang Lian Xiang and her husband was Woei or Goei Renfang .
