Chong Wei in same half with nemesis Lin Dan

PETALING JAYA: Lin Dan will be an early stumbling block for Lee Chong Wei in his attempt to win a seventh Malaysia Open title.
In the draw released by Badminton World Federation (BWF) yesterday for the season-opening Super Series championships at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Jan 18-23, the top seeded Chong Wei found himself in the same half as his nemesis.
And they are tipped to play in the semi-finals. In their last meeting at the Guangzhou Asian Games last November, Lin Dan defeated Chong Wei in the final.
Chong Wei also has in his quarter Vietnamese Nguyen Tien Minh, India’s P. Kashyap and Japanese Sho Sasaki and Kazushi Yamada.
Two other Malaysians – Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Wong Choong Hann – are in the same quarter with Lin Dan and another Chinese, Chen Long.
The other half of the draw has second seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana, China’s Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai and Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro.
In the men’s doubles, top seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong have a tricky first-round match against Copenhagen Masters champions Mads Conrads-Petersen-Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark.
The other pairs in the same half are Koreans Cho Gun-woo-Kwon Yi-goo, Indonesians Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan and two scratch pairs – Chai Biao-Guo Zhengdong of China and Lee Wan Wah-Chan Chong Ming of Malaysia.
In the other half with Malaysian pairs Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock and Mohd zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How are second seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea, Indonesians Candra Wijaya-Luluk Hadiyanto and Japanese Hirokatsu-Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata.
Wong Mew Choo faces early elimination in the women’s singles competition. She is in the same quarter of the draw with Chinese stars Lu Lan and top seed Wang Xin.

no, daniel you look at it this way:

many of us have the same vision accept a few trolls

to see malaysia badminton florished again.

with the current crisis naturally a lot of us will blame on bam.

1/ take it as a punishment to bam hence supporting misbun's resignation

2/ think misbun leaves bam is good in the long run as bam may do something
rather than risk another crisis so support misbun to leave.

3/ dislike misbun in the first place or bam supporter so wants him to leave.

4/ no matter what, still wants misbun inside for future of badminton thus support
    his stay

now you tell me this poll is accurate or time wasting

really serve no purpose at all to me:D

Facing 2 CHN, esp WX right after LL, even if Miss Wong plays the best baddy of her life, it is tough...better make it impossible to win. Now with a heavier, 'upgraded' chest and extra weight she carries:D:p, err...it is as good as impossible to win:p

Zakry ready for last attempt to salvage career

KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles shuttler Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif was unsure of his purpose in the national elite team just a few months ago.

Now that his target and goals have been clearly defined, Zakry is ready to make a last attempt to salvage his career in a partnership with Hoon Thien How.

And he hopes to get off to a good start in the Malaysia Open, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Jan 18-23.

Zakry-Thien How is one of six pairs identified by the coaching and training committee last week to gun for qualification to the 2012 London Olympics.

The others are senior pairs Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock and the back-up squad’s Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah.

Zakry was happy that together with Thien How, they had been given a second chance.

“Thien How and I did quite well at the Thomas Cup Finals last year but since then, we have not been stable,” he said.

“We have now been given the chance to make attempts to qualify for the Olympics and that has given us a new motivation.

“It show that the coaches still have faith in us. It is now our job to seriously work on our game.

“Our first task is to improve on our world rankings.”

For a start, a good showing at the Malaysia Open will help them to start moving up from the No. 87 spot.

    By Raphael Sachetat –

Singapore, Jan 11th. Following the announcement that CEO of Singapore Badminton Association, Mr. Edwin Pang would be leaving on Feb 9, there was more breaking news on the Singapore badminton scene today. According to the Straits Times, 10 second string singles players from Team 2 have been told to choose between helping out as sparring partners or leaving. They have also been invited to join NIS (National Intermediate Squad) to play the role of sparring partners, whereby they will get no allowance nor opportunities to compete in overseas tournaments. Team 2 players were sent to tournaments such as the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2010. NIS, which is expected to be formed soon as part of a strategy to develop youth talent, is for players aged 13 to 17. The age of the players from Team 2 range from 18 to 21 years old.
One of the 10 players, Noriko Goh, 18, told Badzine she has decided to leave to pursue her degree studies: “I am thinking of studying sports psychology. After all, I have been an athlete, so maybe in some ways I can contribute to the sports industry.”
According to the Straits Times, Kelvin Ho, who opted against taking his O level (secondary school) examinations in 2007 – despite his father’s disapproval – to train full time, has also decided to leave to go studying to secure a better future.

Chong Wei, Hafiz ready for the challenge from full-strength China squad

KUALA LUMPUR: The presence of players from China do not strike fear on the Malaysians.

Yesterday, the country’s top two men’s singles players, Lee Chong Wei and Mohd Hafiz Hashim, welcomed the challenge of the Chinese in the US$400,000 Malaysia Open, which begins tomorrow with the qualifying tournament at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalail.

China have their full cast in the men’s singles event and the participation of Lin Dan, Chen Long, Bao Chunlai, Chen Jin and Du Pengyu will be a treat to the fans in the season-opening Super Series circuit.

Top seed and defending champion Chong Wei said that the more the merrier on the impressive line-up China would parade in the Malaysia Open.

“The China stars have been missing from the Malaysia Open for the last few edition. Their presence certainly does a world of good to the tournament,” he said.

“This year’s tournament offers lucrative prize money and it will be very competitive. It will certainly mean more to win it this time.”

On the presence of world champion Lin Dan, Chong Wei said that he would stay focused on the task, whoever is his opponent.

The last time Chong Wei played at home against Lin Dan was in the Thomas Cup semi-final tie in May last year and he suffered a thrashing by the Chinese superstar.

I choose not to be affected by what people say about my previous encounters with Lin Dan. The most important thing is to stay focused from within. I promise to give my best,” said Chong Wei, who was also beaten by Lin Dan in the final at the Guangzhou Asian Games last November.

Chong Wei, who retained the Super Series Masters Finals crown on Jan 9, is in the same quarter as Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam and Japanese Sho Sasaki and Kazushi Yamada. If he makes the semi-finals, he is expected to play against Lin Dan.

Hafiz is determined to clear his opening round match on Wednesday against Chen Long.

It is an unkind draw but one that I am not too worried about. Chen Long lost to Peter Gade Christensen (of Denmark) in the recent Masters Finals. I have beaten him once at the India Open (2009),” he said.

In the same quarter as Hafiz and Chen Long are Lin Dan, Malaysian veteran Wong Choong Hann and England’s Rajiv Ouseph.

The other half of the draw has second seed Taufik Hidayat and his Indonesian compatriots Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Simon Santoso and Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka; China’s Chen Jin, Chunlai and Pengyu; South Korea’s Park Sung-hwan and Shon Wan-ho; and Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana.

Withdrawals of some players a boon to our back-up boys

THE withdrawal of several players, including Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro, is a blessing in disguise for all the Malaysian elite back-up singles shuttlers.

Yesterday, Sony, who is plagued by a back injury, was confirmed absent together with India’s P. Kashyap and Malaysia’s Tan Chun Seang.

Their withdrawal opened up spots for Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng and Chan Kwong Beng to play in the qualifying tournament, which will be held today.

And the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaching and training committee chairman, Ng Chin Chai, hoped the second stringers would come good.

“Chun Seang has not recovered from his injury (foot) and had to withdraw. But we have three others in the fray and this is a good chance for them to deliver some good results,” he said.

Daren will take on Hsueh Hsuan-yi of Taiwan while Wei Feng takes on Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia. It will be easier for Chan Kwong Beng against Taiwanese Chou Tien-chen.

Former international K. Yogendran also has a place in the qualifying tournament, replacing top seed Brice Leverdez of France, who moved into the main draw.
