Badminton: Back injury forces Chong Wei to skip China Masters

    By LIM TEIK HUAT

SEPANG: Lee Chong Wei is skipping the China Masters in Changzhou from Sept 14-19, leaving Malaysia without a representative in the men’s singles competition this year.
Singles coach Misbun Sidek made the decision after discussing with Chong Wei and felt it would be advisable for his charge not to risk aggravating his back injury.
The world No. 1 complained of back pain after his third-round match against India’s Rajiv Ouseph at the world championships in Paris last Wednesday.
The strain proved to be too much for Chong Wei and he went on to suffer an unexpected defeat by former world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in the quarter-finals the following day.

“I want Chong Wei to have more time to recover fully as there are more important tournaments coming up (referring to the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in October and November respectively),” said Misbun, who returned home from Paris with the rest of the Malaysian team early yesterday morning.
“Chong Wei will have to seek treatment first with the medical expert. We will only know then how serious is his condition and whether he can resume full training. We consulted the doctor over there (Paris) and he said that Chong Wei has a back spasm injury.
“The China Masters is two weeks away. We have submitted his entry but I feel it is better for him not to compete.”
Chong Wei was to be the top seeded for the China Masters, which has attracted a star-studded cast. Newly-crowned world champion Chen Jin and Olympic champion Lin Dan will carry China’s hopes. Dane Peter Gade-Christensen, a semi-finalist in the world championships, is the only top ranked singles player not taking part.
Chong Wei was beaten by Lin Dan in the semi-finals of the China Masters last year.
World Championship silver medallists Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will also skip the China Masters. They were also the top seeds.
Doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky said that he wanted the world No. 1 men’s pair to recover and get back their match fitness.
“We also want them to work on strengthening certain areas of their game and not to exert them,” he said.
“They have to get ready for the New Delhi Commonwealth Games. Kien Keat-Boon Heong will not be going to China but they will compete in the Japan Open the following week.”
Kien Keat-Boon Heong have been given a one-week break from training and will be back on court next Monday.
With Danish top pair Lars Paaske-Jonas Ras*mus*sen and Indonesian Olympic champions Markis Ki**do-Hendra Setiawan not entered for the China Masters, the men’s doubles title is expected to be a fight between South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung and China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng, who won the world championship title for a third time last Sunday.

    Is Datuk Lee Really Unsporting?

    The Star Online > Focus

    Monday September 6, 2010

    Be more sporting, Chong Wei

I’M a great admirer of Datuk Lee Chong Wei for his contribution in putting Malaysia on the world map.
But I’m very disappointed to observe that immediately after shaking hands, he did not compliment Hidayat Taufik for his splendid win and wish him success in the next encounter. Instead, he lamented his misfortune of having a sore back before the game.
This is unsporting as he could have explained his misfortune at a subsequent meeting with the media. I do sympathise with him over the sudden turn of events. It was most unfortunate.
I was formerly the captain of the Malaysian Davis Cup team for two years. Every time we won we sympathised with the loser, saying it was just not his day and every time we lost, we congratulated the winner for his splendid performance and wished him every success in the next round.
Such gestures should be emulated by our sporting fraternity and I’m sure our athletes would gain much respect.
Having said, that I conclude with the motto “The best is yet to come,” for all our sportsmen and rising stars.

    MOSES TAY,
    Malaysian Davis Cup
    team ex-captain.

All the best to LCW... :( I really hope he gets back soon, he is the main flag bearer for Malaysia...
Is this the first time an injury has to force him out for so long since 2006?

To those people who said that LCW's back injury is just a lame excuse... now you all know better!

Indeed back injury is a problem that needs to be attended with great care regardless either it is a muscle problem or joint problem in origin. It's one nagging injury that can haunt him if not well treated. Hopefully he gets well properly.

I ALSO WANT TO JOIN THIS MAD CLUB - Media hype will not do any good

Personally, if this guy sympathize for the defeat of Datuk LCW to Taufik, he should give more positive remarks rather than creating a media hype for such issue. What more bombardement of misery that Datuk LCW should receive enough by having a back injury, lost to an opponent that has not beaten him for the past 5 meetings and when beaten, it is in the most prestigous badminton tournament other than the Olympic and All England and on top of it, while Malaysia people hope he can break the jinx, for the continous 2nd consecutive time, he was again beaten in the quaterfinal......that is a lot to swallow and having such media remarks will just not do any good.

If he is an admirer of Datuk LCW, one should well knows that Datuk LCW and Taufik are good friend and compliments not need to come in words, any friendly physical gesture such as shaking hands can explain everything more than words can express Mr Moses. I beleive that when Datuk LCW shakes Taufik hands, taufik acknowledges that it is just not Datuk LCW day and i also beleive Datuk LCW well knows that Taufik played exeptionally well and deserve to win that day.

Chong Wei is taking part in JO

    Courtesy of NST.

LEE Chong Wei, after his disappointing outing in the World Championships in Paris last month, will be back in action in the Japan Open on Sept 21-26.
The Super Series event should prove interesting as Chong Wei could face newly crowned wold champion Chen Jin of China in a possible semi-final showdown.

Chong Wei had blamed a muscle spasm which restricted his movement on court as the reason for his shocking quarter-final defeat to Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in Paris.

However, Chong Wei has been almost unbeatable in the Super Series and will be the player to beat in Japan although the world's best will also be competing. It will be an extraordinary coincidence if Chong Wei meets compatriot Hafiz Hashim in the second round, as he is expected to, as it was at this stage the Malaysians met in Paris with Chong Wei coming out the better.

Chong Wei opens against India's V. Gurusaidutt and should advance to the quarter-finals where he meets a familiar foe in Bao Chunlai of China.

China's Lin Dan, who crashed to Park Sung Hwan of South Korea in the World Championships, is also competing but will be in the bottom half of the draw which includes second-seeded veteran Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark and World Championships runner-up Taufik.

Lin Dan is expected to meet Taufik in the last eight while Christensen could be his semi-final opponent.

Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, runners-up in Paris, will also get a chance to redeem themselves and another clash against South Koreans Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae is on the cards.

Japanese pairs have often proved to be the banana skin for Kien Keat-Boon Heong and they must get past Shohei Hashino-Akira Kobayashi in the first round and then Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa in the next -- before a possible quarter-final clash against Taiwan's Fang Chieh Min-Lee Sheng Mu.

Should Kien Keat-Boon Heong make it to the semis, they could meet Jae Sung-Yong Dae for a place in the final. Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia are expected to take on world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng in the other semi-final.

Malaysia have not entered any women players for the tournament.
