I agree, this just makes badminton look like it's in the dark ages, and makes tournaments look like a farce.

This is not art critiquing, there is no black and white, and there is no justification for human error as being "all part of the game". In this day and age, there should be solid rules and solid technologies - just like there is in Tennis.

I'm embarassed for the sport at the moment. Things need to change NOW.

    Hehe.. Lol.. :D
Well I like to see such great sportsmanship from Tago. Hope hee won't turn to some of the Chinese player. Now iff that was Lin Dan playing that final with LCW and he need only one point and he got that call he would probably pummeled the line judge to the ground :p

Technology is not perfect yet. Among the critics of the Hawkeye is Roger Federer himself.

Even so, Hawkeye is expensive and I am not sure if it will work well for badminton. Firstly, the equipment may be simple to install on a big arena like a tennis court, but on a badminton arena with 4 to 5 courts tightly bunched together, I am not sure. Secondly, few badminton arenas will have those replay screens; even if one has, all the courts are sharing one screen. Tennis has the money, badminton doesn't. Dark age or not, money talks. If you don't have the money to buy a gun, a knife will have to do. No one will accuse you of living in the bronze age.

A simple camera over the lines can do the trick, but they need to be installed at all courts, maybe 8-10 cameras per court. And they all need to be hooked up to some storage and replay system. I am quite sure it won't be cheap either.

Then, there is the flow to the game. There must a reason why football (soccer), a very rich sport, does not use the replay system to review judgements, even though all the equipment is there already. They only require a fourth official to have a TV and to signal back to the referee after review.

We should not discussed about Hawkeye...we have discussed it to death in many threads..
    First..it costs US$ 50K per court
second..shuttlecock is not round like tennis ball..BWF has tested the accuracy and it is about 70% max...
Tennis ball is round..when it touches surface..hawkeye can identify..but not shuttlecock..hawkeye may register birdie touches the surface which we know it is not working that way

Ah, I didn't know this. Good to know that BWF did try it. It's not like they just ignored the issue.

bad call for sure, unfortunate for tago

but fortunately, for badminton, tago doesn't have enough fans yet for this to be a real issue, it will soon be forgotten(sounds cruel but that's how it works), I don't think the 100th AE will be tainted

Thats one of the reason why big events like OG, TC, we have international linesmen...even BWF is considering to have full professional linesmen in future for Grandslam....
Also before that BWF has implemented that every SS, it should have at least 6 international referees.....after too many incidents in 2007...
Unfortunately itakes longer as growing badminton takes time and still many dominating countries are not working together well to promote badminton...
Currently BWF is trying Multinational companies to sponsor Badminton which it is not easy..lets say getting Omega, McDonalds,Shell,,for example....

Well it's easy in retrospect to say I thought it was out. Or to say that it was what I thought. That doesn't matter in terms of human error. The truth is that up until match point it seems that the line judge did an okay job (I wasn't there to say for sure but I'm going to go out on a limb here) so I don't think that the entire match's result should be blamed on the line judge, which is what seems to be happening with a lot of fans.

So many bad calls , or lets say close calls like TH vs Gade in 3rd set...or LuLan vs Tine in 2nd set ...Simon vs Gade in 2nd set...too many too mentions...what happened is done and cant be undone...unfortunately....
we can argue to death even Tago or anyone got deuce..there is not 100% quarantee that he or she could win next points...it is just tough life...

Actually I'm thinking in retrospect it might even be for the best. When has match point been decided on error? I don't mean it's right, but not everyone remember who won the world cup with France or Italy, but everyone remembers Zidane's head butt. I mean what other hype do you have since LD was knocked out and LCW was having an off game.

Yeah, there is no such thing as bad publicity, not that it's intentional or right.

Here is a totally unreasonable suggestion for technology. You should put a touch sensor all the way around the court for half a foot. Therefore it doesn't affect play and if it falls on it, we'd know. If it doesn't fall on it, it's in or obviously out. But then again, totally unreasonable.

It's just so touching that nobody seems to give a sh!t about justice and fairness.

Oooh it's too expensive.......ooooh it's 'unproven technology'......ooooh, don't interrupt the flow of the game....

    Bullsh!t!

any line dispute is a greater disruption to the flow of game.
    - haggling with the umpire
    -asking for the referee
    - more haggling
    - reluctant to play on, strolling around.
    - more mopping, change shuttle

But see Hawkeye is a great idea for the ability to disrupt the game. To use it to get a breather or disrupt your opponent, that's why they are given a limited amount of challenges. I mean it's a mental sport as well as a physical and it gives a great option to be able to play around with both. Adds depth to the game.

There is no reason to use Hawkeye at all. The fast-speed camera is all that is required. They should be placed on strategic location especially straight facing the lines. Also the best if the camera can be mounted on top of the court to have the view on top. The umpire must have the display that can review the replay of the shots. Just like the one that they showed on TV is good enough. Before a line call, umpire must clearly review the shots before determining the shot is in or out. The 100th AE was the best example of bad line call that can ruin a match. Its about time BWF wakes up, catch up with Tennis and do something to save the sport. Reason is there is a loop hole here because if the line judges are corrupted or bias, nothing can be done. Badminton will be a controversial sport. Just like how Argentina won the world cup with Maradona's hand of God. I really2 hope history won't repeat in the coming world cup and thomas cup or Olympic. BWF should use this AE experience to do something about this urgently for all Super Series event. If you can raise the prize money to bring up the sport, why not invest in a few high speed camera. We cannot blame the line judges because the human eyes are slow. But we have a technology available, the high speed cameras were used to capture the players' action...why not use it to capture the shuttles as it hit the ground near the lines? I think it can be done. Not something impossible. BWF please do something....urgent. If this bad line call is made to Taufik or Lin Dan, I am sure a big big protest will result. KT is still young and very sporting. Even though he lost, he won our hearts with his fighting spirit...just like the Japanese anime boxer hajim no IPPO. I think one day he will bounce back stronger. Since nothing can be done about the past, BWF please do something for the future of the sport, for the fans and for yourselves to get back the creditability.
Yes, this is repeated post of the same subject, but everyone should have a voice or say to this issue so the BWF realise this is really2 a big issue and must be addressed before the next super series or Thomas Cup or World Cup.
