Early psychological war 2010/01/10 K.M. Boopathy NATIONAL singles coach Misbun Sidek believes the potential final showdown between Lee Chong Wei and fierce rival Lin Dan of China in the Malaysia Open will be crucial for both players in their buildup to the year's major events. Lin Dan, who has avoided playing in the Malaysia Open since 2006, had the Thomas Cup Finals in mind when he decided to compete in the Malaysia Open at Putra Stadium on Jan 19-24. Misbun said that Lin Dan will obviously want to do better after losing to Chong Wei in the 2005 and 2006 Malaysia Opens. Putra Stadium will be the stage where the May 9-16 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals will be held and victory for either player, should they meet in the final, will give the winner a psychological edge in the team event. "A Chong Wei-Lin Dan final is the match everyone is waiting for and it will be equally crucial for both players. It would be fantastic if Chong Wei can win, especially as the Thomas Cup will be held at the same venue," said Misbun. "A victory for Chong Wei will put some doubt in Lin Dan's mind and having already lost in the 2008 Thomas Cup semi-finals (in Jakarta), the pressure will be on him. "It is not going to be easy as Chong Wei would be playing in his second consecutive tournament and it will also depend on how fast he can recover from the Korea Open (next week). "However, this is a good test as the international schedule will be hectic and such back-to-back tournaments will be a regular feature. "If things go Chong Wei's way, he can look forward to the other major events with confidence. It is rare to have such a quality event so early and both players will be aiming to take the advantage." Chong Wei has captured five Malaysia Open crowns while this is one of the rare titles to have eluded Lin Dan. The World Championships in Paris on Aug 23-29 and Asian Games in Guangzhou on Nov 13-21 will be Lin Dan's major targets and Chong Wei will be searching for glory in the same events. The Commonwealth Games in New Delhi on Oct 3-14 is another priority for Chong Wei but he will not have to worry about Lin Dan as China are not part of the Games. However, Chong Wei must start beating Lin Dan on a regular basis to ensure he has a fighting chance in the World Championships and Asian Games. He last beat Lin Dan in the Swiss Open last March.
Saturday January 16, 2010 Badminton: Troubled Indonesia withdraw their top stars KUALA LUMPUR: The best of Indonesia will not feature in the Malaysian Open, which begins on Wednesday at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil. And it has sparked off speculations that all is not well in their badminton camp. It was confirmed yesterday that their senior shuttlers, singles players Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso and the top men’s pair of Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan, will not be making the trip to Malaysia. The Indonesian national stars also did not make it to Seoul for this week’s season-opening Korean Open. In their absence, Indonesia will bank on independent player Taufik Hidayat. Their challenges in the men’s doubles will be carried by their national back-up pairs, Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki-Rian Sukmawan and Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano, and the independent combination of Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) said that the All-Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) did not give any reason for the last-minute withdrawal of their top players from the Malaysian Open. But it could be linked to the PBSI’s new contract for players in the national camp in Cipayung. Malaysia’s doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky did not want to read too much into the absence of the Indonesian players. “It will be business as usual for us,” said Rexy, who is an Indonesian. “Our goal still remains the same. The players will have to make the best of the situation to end the country’s three-year wait for an Open title at home.” The last win for Malaysia in their home Open was through the men’s pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in 2007. The absence of Markis-Kido could narrow down the fight for the men’s doubles crown to the top two seeds – Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung. The other top pairs not in the fray are China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and Denmark’s Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen and Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen. Meanwhile, the BAM also confirmed that fourth seeds Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Christinna Pedersen of Denmark have pulled out of the tournament.
Shuttlers Koo and Tan eye rousing start to year http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2010/1/16/sports/5483448&sec=sports Boon Heong-Koo Kien Keat are the top seeds and they have an opening round match against unseeded but dangerous Indonesians Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki-Rian Sukmawan. They have a clean record against Yonathan-Rian but it is getting more difficult to hold the aggressive Indonesians at bay. And Boon Heong is aware that they have to tread with caution and play their cards right. “We defeated them en route to winning the Denmark Open title but it was close. They are getting better and better,” said Boon Heong.
Minor correction.. Looks like the author of the article needs to scour BC more. "Last win for Malaysia in their home Open" in which event? If it's in MD, then it's true. But LCW did win the MS title in the 2008 & 2009 Malaysia Open SS.
http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2010/1/17/sports/5489846&sec=sports High hopes on mixed doubles in home Open KUALA LUMPUR: The heat is on the mixed doubles pairs to prove their worth in the national team this year. And the top two national back-up pairs Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei will have to make strong efforts to stamp their marks in the Malaysian Open, which begin on Wednesday at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil. National doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky is upping the ante this year. “This is no longer a year for exposure for our mixed doubles pairs. It is the year for them to produce results,” he said. “The target for them is to qualify for the world championships (in Paris in August). We also want them to be among the medallists in the Commonwealth Games (in India in October) and also to make their presence felt in the Asian Games (in Guangzhou in November).” The highest ranked Malaysian pair on the world list are Laos SEA Games bronze medallist Peng Soon-Liu Ying at No. 25. The others – Wee Kiong-Khe Wei, Lim Khim Wah-Vivian Hoo, Sabrina Chong-Ong Jian Guo, Mohd Lutfi Zaim Abdul Khalid-Lim Yin Loo, Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Nairul Suhada Abdul Latif and Mak Hee Chun-Ng Hui Lin – do not have prominent standings because of changes in partnerships over the last one year. Malaysia gave emphasis on building a strong mixed doubles department in 2008 and coach Jeremy Gan has the responsibility to mobilise it. Rexy said that Peng Soon-Liu Ying and Wee Kiong-Khe Wei would get to play in more international tournaments. “They are the two more stable pairs and have the potential to go far. They will be given more opportunities to improve their world rankings. The others still need to work on their games,” he said. Malaysia also have Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty as a mixed doubles pair and they are now ranked at No. 68. But the duo are not expected to be fielded in tournaments beyond the Guangzhou Asiad. “They have the stronger commitment to the men’s and women’s doubles event. But for now, they will still play in the mixed doubles as the presence of a senior pair has its benefits,” said Rexy. In the Malaysian Open, Kien Keat-Pei Tty, Sabrina-Jian Guo, Khim Wah-Vivian are in the same half of the draw as top seeds and Olympic champions Lee Yong-dae-Lee Hyo-jung of South Korea. Hee Chun-Hui Lin and Peng Soon-Liu Ying are in the other half with second seeds Nova Widianto-Lilyana Natsir of Indonesia. The others – Wee Kiong-Khe Wei, Lutfi-Yin Loo, Mohd Razif-Nairul – will have to play in the qualifying tournament on Tuesday. Wee Kiong and Khe wei should be promoted to the main draw as Neilsen-Pedersen withdrawn
Breaking news: Lin Dan to skip M'sia Open, once again.. ..no showdown between LD vs. LCW....really sorry for all the BCers who were planning to watch SuperDan..sorry to Pemuda, also, as LCW's chances seem to improve all of a sudden..what a nice guy, Lin Dan is! Hope to see you in May! http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2010/1/18/sports/5492912&sec=sports ========================================================== Monday January 18, 2010 Lin Dan set to skip Malaysian Open KUALA LUMPUR: It looks as though three-time world champion Lin Dan of China has turned his back on a challenge to end the domination of Lee Chong Wei in the Malaysian Open. There is no official statement yet on his withdrawal from the championships, which begin on Wednesday at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil here. But it is learnt that the Chinese superstar cancelled his hotel booking at the Palace of Golden Horse in Seri Kembangan yesterday. With the withdrawal of the second seeded Lin Dan, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) may have to conduct a redraw for the men’s singles. Two days ago, Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso also pulled out. The trio had been drawn in the half of the draw consisting fourth seed Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark, Thai Boonsak Pon**sana and Malaysians Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Wong Choong Hann. The other half of the draw has top seed and defending champion Chong Wei, China’s Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin, South Korean Park Sung-hwan and Danes Jan O Jorgensen and Joachim Persson. The absence of Lin Dan, who has yet to win the Malaysian Open, brightens Chong Wei’s chances to win his home Open for a sixth time. Chong Wei said from Seoul yesterday that the withdrawal of Lin Dan from the Ma**lay**sian Open did not come as a surprise. “Word was abuzz here that he will not make the trip to Bukit Jalil. I don’t know why he’s pulling out but it does not surprise me,” said Chong Wei. “Whether he is in or out, my goal remains the same – to go all out and try to win the home title again.”
Dang,....once again LD withdraw..............!! I was hoping to witness the big clash between LD and LCW in Bukit Jalil.................argh...
Hmm, once again last minute withdrawal from the Chinese superstar... Very high possibility for LD participation in this year -- All England, Thomas Cup, World Champ, 2 CHN SS and Asian Games.
Not ready? Why is Lin Dan pulling out? Is it after witnessing LCW's performance, he needs to train harder and not ready? And also, is there any penalties for all this late withdrawals? Is it fair to the spectators? Can the spectators claim compensation from the players who withdrew?
I really don't care whether LD is coming to msia open or not.... I didn't buy my tix to watch him.....
well..I have guessed it.... LD and Ciayun/FHF will play only selected tournaments....China will make sure that LD's game does not get too much exposed.....to be fair..I think LD should play more tournaments and help promote badminton.... FOR China WS...any their Top 7 can win any tournaments...
I do hope INA's "vulnerable" shuttlers like Nova/Butet and Kido/Hendra can follow the same strategy if they do want to win the All-England and Asian Games this year; which I believe will be their remaining targets. That's just my opinion though
For SDK, Simon, Kido/Setiawan, AE will become their first SS in this year and we may hope better result from them
Doubtful for all of them though, Simon or Sony could not even beat Chen Jin or Peter Gade last year, if I remember correctly Yes, they did beat LCW surprisingly.... As for Kido/Hendra, they will struggle to beat Boe/Mogensen, Koo/Tan, Fu/Cai, and Jung/Lee if they are to win the AE this year.
What is the reason for withdrawing? Valid or not ? What is and should be BWF's reaction ? It's ok because China is so powerful, we can't do anything?
awkward. always malaysia open. The interesting part would be the fans speculations on why. And LD and the gang can forever be in denial mode. But what about malaysia you are so scared of, actually?
