for you guys & gals who had undergo training before: It would be interesting if all of you out there can share your comment on this - how do we define a good coach?
A good coach (IMO) is one who can not only pass on the right skills but do it in the manner most efficient for each student. For the first half, I know many very good players that have no idea how to pass on their skills. I also know many average players trying to pass on bad skills. The second half has to do with the mentality of the student, each student learns a little differently and most importantly, gets motivated differently. For instance, some need to be yelled at, others hate it.
good! at least somebody start something! yes, druss, you are right! not all good players can be good coaches. they have the skill but just can't pass them on. also they need to take courses so to be complete. on the other hand, the above could be the trainee - they are probably slow learners...or some should take up discipline courses first! to sum up, here we have communication skills needed as well as disciplinary courses!
First, I need to ask whether a coach for u is the same as a trainer, teacher etc.? For the western world I believe that the understanding of a "coach" have changed with the management-concepts in businesslife, where "coachING" has been the new hype for some years now! This means that the sportscoach and coaching, seems to coorelate as something very different from a trainer. If u r looking for a "normative" definition, that is, telling what is a superior coach, it should be different for different cultures, or u should make it so general that it becomes completely uselees! For a trainer in DK my definition of a superior trainer is a movie (sometimes words is not good enough): PS: "DONT TRY THIS AT HOME" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmNyv2Pddg4&feature=related YAWP
thanks! that was a nice movie clip! yes, there are a lot of differences between a coach and a trainer. in fact even among the different level coaching courses - when i took the first class in my level 2, i was surprise when my tutor greeted us (purposely) as 'good morning all trainers!' and later he went on to explain....
for me is simple. good coach = achievements having coach but not winning tournaments, this is not a good sign. good coach will determine his/her apprentice's weakness and overcome it.
great! here we have an achievement believer! yes, if i were to send my kid for coaching i would choose a reputable coach who has proven results but on the other hand i also have to ask myself these questions - is my kid talented or just average, does he see training as a way to develop his badminton career and not just for exercises. In fact there are many more questions to ask ourselves...
A good coach is someone not only teach you badminton strokes and footwork, but can also lead you to national level.. To me , Lee Yong Bo is a good coach , see he lead Lin dan to so many great titles!
yes, lee yong bo is a good coach! when he is around china usually wins many title but he may not be the one person responsible for lin dan's success! there are the development coaches (i don't know their names) that taught lin dan the very first skill then the other coaches who took over when he was in the national team. so you see in this case coach lee yong bo may not be able to lead china with so many titles if, lets say if the other down line coaches gave him dan li instead of lin dan!
if my kid is talented? why he/she needs good coach? Roger Federer wins so many matched and tournaments without coach. how good is the coach is how good the player's achievement.
right! here we have a good example but unfortunately in tennis - it may not work for a talented badminton player. without guidance from a good coach he or she will have to learn the hard way all by himself/herself, by then age catches up! its no good for badminton... if nobody can control/help lin dan's temper he sure will become dan li! good coach shorten the learning process besides finding new ones to teach but at the end its the receiver ...
During last yr's korean open , the empire pointed in when Lee Hun L smashes out, that's why Lin dan was fustrated , and Li Mao try to pick up a fight with Lin dan, that's why make him angry
yes that actually happened and it looks like lm took the advantage of it .... btw, was that a good coach?
which perspective that one looking at? if my coach fights for my rights, is a good coach. if opponent's coach comes in to create stir, is a no good coach.
he's both a good one and a bad one - depending on who u r!! if you are the korean you would love it and if you are the chinese player actually you are hit by tornado and the worst part you didn't run...
really hard to say my friend! smart coach taking the opportunity to provoke ld.... personally i don't like that its against coaches ethic!
No matter how good the coach is it is all depend on the student. For me, a good coach is someone who can see the strength and weaknesses of his student. Having a good relationship also help in building the trust between coach and the student. Able to communicate to the student and able to teach with method that is easy to understand to the student. Also, a good coach must have a "good" vision/dream on what he wants his student to become.
yes this is the type of trainee every coaches would love to groom! however most trainee wants it this way, see it this way but not following this way.....
can we say this? can we say this ? he or she is a good coach when this equation is completed: coach = right material + achievement
